Australia’s cricket team has flown into Pakistan on their first tour of the country in nearly a quarter of a century – and into a security bubble that will envelop them throughout their six-week stay. Pakistan have struggled to attract visiting sides since a fatal terror attack on the visiting Sri Lanka team’s bus in 2009. Australia pulled out of a tour five years earlier after a suicide blast at a Lahore church. They last played in Pakistan in 1998, winning a three-Test series 1-0 and blanking the hosts in the three one-day internationals. “They have landed,” a Pakistani security official said while Australia batsman Steve Smith posted a picture on Twitter saying the team had arrived. Australia will play three Tests, three one-day internationals, and one Twenty20 match before leaving on April 6. Having been forced to play their home games abroad – mainly in the United Arab Emirates – Pakistan appeared to have reassured international cricket authorities last year, with both New Zealand and England scheduled to tour. But the Black Caps hastily departed in September just minutes before their first match was due to start, citing security fears. England postponed tours by their men’s and women’s teams soon after. The decisions incensed Pakistan cricket authorities, who felt they had done everything possible to ensure safety and security. They say they are again leaving nothing to chance, with nearly 4,000 police and military personnel guarding the team hotel in Islamabad and the cricket stadium in the nearby garrison city of Rawalpindi. The Australian men's cricket team has landed in Pakistan for the all-format series, scheduled to start from March 4. According to details, the Aussies reached Islamabad during the wee hours of Sunday morning via a special plane and were escorted to their hotel from the airport under tight security. PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja told ESPNcricinfo that the cricket board was in “advanced negotiations” with a number of sponsors. The highest bidder would win the right to have the stadium renamed after it. There have been a number of attempts in the past to change the name of the iconic stadium, but all of them were for political reasons, he said. “However, this one is purely financial,” Ramiz told the publication, adding that other stadiums in the country, including the National Stadium Karachi (NSK), could also be renamed. Shafique and Azam lead Pakistan fightback in second Test “We acquired the services of YouGov [a public opinion and data company] to estimate the brand worth of our stadia, and how much sponsorship deals would be worth,” Ramiz said. “That's not just true of the Gaddafi Stadium, but also the NSK and others. We've been working towards this for a while, and the response from sponsors has been satisfactory. Once we finalise a deal [for Lahore], the name Gaddafi will go completely with a sponsor's name replacing it.” It is worth noting that when the stadium was built in 1959, it was called Lahore Stadium. In 1974, on his visit to Lahore, Gaddafi delivered a speech at the Organization of Islamic Conference where he supported Pakistan's right to seek nuclear weapons. Following this, Pakistan's then-prime minister, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, changed the name of the premier cricket stadium to honour the Libyan leader. When Gaddafi was deposed, there were strong suggestions that Pakistani cricket would want to disassociate itself from him, but this did not gain any traction.
