2019 Women's Basketball Championship Highlights - #1 UConn 92, #8 ECU 65
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – UConn forward Napheesa Collier registered a double-double of 37 points (15-20) and 13 rebounds to power the top-seeded Huskies past No. 8-seed ECU 92-65 in Saturday’s quarterfinals of the 2019 American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championships at Mohegan Sun Arena. UConn, which has won every American women’s basketball title, will take on No. 5-seed USF in the semifinals Sunday at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN2. UConn and USF have previously squared off in the past four conference championship games. Olivia Nelson-Ododa tied The American’s tournament record with 17 rebounds, while Collier’s 15 field goals bested the conference’s championship mark set by Tulsa’s Crystal Polk in 2018. The Huskies’ 51 rebounds are the second-most registered in conference history. Along with Collier, Crystal Dangerfield (16 points), Christyn Williams (16 points) and Megan Walker (14 points) each reached double figures in points. Walker also had 10 rebounds to join Collier in earning a double-double. Shooting 53 percent in the game, UConn led 51-26 in rebounds and tallied 52 points in the paint. Lashonda Monk led ECU with 20 points. Collier reached double-digits in the opening quarter, scoring 13 points (4-5) to fuel UConn’s 47 percent shooting percentage. Leading 15-13, Collier tallied seven-straight points to hand the Huskies a 22-13 lead. However, ECU used a 9-2 run through the final two minutes of the first quarter, capped by Monk’s buzzer-beater layup to make it a one-possession game (24-22). The Pirates shot 48 percent in the opening frame. UConn responded with an 11-0 run to open the second quarter with Collier accounting for nine points during that surge. ECU scored the next six points, including a trey from Monk, to close the gap to six (35-28). The Pirates got within five points before Nelson-Ododa beat the buzzer inside for two in the paint to give UConn a 46-39 edge at halftime. Collier finished the half with a double-double of 29 points (11-13) and 10 rebounds. Monk led the Pirates with 15 points at the break. UConn ended the half with 24 points in the paint and a 28-14 rebounding advantage. Dangerfield, Walker and Collier each scored a layup to start the second half, expanding the Huskies’ lead to 52-39. Nelson-Ododa registered four blocks in the third frame to help hold the Pirates to shooting 28 percent in the third quarter. UConn shot 43-percent from the floor in the frame, outscoring ECU 21-11 in to enter the fourth quarter with a 67-50 lead, matching their largest lead of the game so far. The Huskies carried the energy into the final frame scoring their first eight field goals to jump out to an 83-63 lead. UConn shot 75 percent (12-16) in the fourth quarter ending the game on a 9-0 run, while holding ECU without a point through the final 3:42. UNCASVILLE, Conn. – After falling to Wichita State by 22 points four days ago, No. 7 seed Tulsa earned its vengeance in the opening round of the 2019 American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championships with a 61-50 win over the No. 10 seed Shockers Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Golden Hurricane will play No. 2 seed UCF at 6 p.m. ET Saturday. The Golden Hurricane has advanced from the first round to the quarterfinals for the past four years. Four Tulsa players reached double-digit scoring with Cryatal Polk (19 points), Rebecca Lescay (13 points) and Maddie Bittle (11 points) and Alexis Gaulden (10 points) combining for 53 points. Tulsa ended the night with 16 points off turnovers. Freshman Seraphine Bastin scored seven free throws and led Wichita State with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Polk was off to a strong start offensively, accounting for eight of the Golden Hurricane’s 18 first-quarter points. Wichita State used a 7-0 run to briefly trim the deficit to one (14-13) before Lescay and Morgan Brady each drove to the rim for layups to give Tulsa five-point cushion (18-13) heading into the second quarter. Wichita State got within one after a 4-0 spurt, but Tulsa made three-straight field goals, including a pair of treys from Bittle to pull ahead by seven (31-24). Lescay ended the opening-half action with excitement, hitting a buzzer-beater three-pointer in transition to send the Golden Hurricane into the locker room with their largest lead of the night so far (34-26). Tulsa flexed its muscles on defense in the third quarter, forcing six-consecutive turnovers during a seven-minute window, while expanding its lead to 15 points after Bittle scored five-straight points, including her third trey of the night (45-30). She finished the night 3-for-4 from downtown. Wichita State then saw success on defense in the final frame, forcing seven turnovers and getting back within single digits. PSF : Report (YourThurrock) - Tilbury's pre-season campaign took a dent on a warm sunny afternoon in Oxfordshire. Up against Southern League premier side Banbury and missing some important players, the Dockers conceded two goals in each half. Banbury had slightly the better of the opening and got the breakthrough on 27 minutes Adam Confue picked up the ball in the middle of the field and burst through the centre and with just the goalkeeper to beat he did so convincingly from just inside the penalty area. Seconds later defender Danny Smith had a good run and hit just wide of the post. It was 2-0 in the 41st minute when Aaron Woodley caught out the visiting defence with a run through on the right of the field and though he was denied by James Marrable in the Tilbury goal, the loose ball was centred across from the right by Confueto leave Ben Polk with a simple tap in right under the cross bar.At the break Tilbury were forced in to substitutions due to injury's and remained on the back foot. 2 minutes into the second half a long ball down the field was pounced on by Aaron Woodley who got in ahead of Sam West and he impressively slotted the ball past Marable to make it 3-0 Banbury were dominant at this point and chances fell to Confue and Ricky Johnson but were not taken. In the 68th minute Adeyinka Talabi was brought down in the penalty area for a very soft penalty Ricky Johnson converted the spot kick to make it 4-0 On 75 minutes a delightful chip from Ben Polk beat Marrable all ends up but the ball smashed against the bar and away to safety. On 84 Bradley Hooper almost pulled a goal back but was denied by a fine save. Three minutes from time a cross from the left by Lorraine saw Josh Blake get on the end of it but his shot came back off woodwork again.After the game Paul Vaughan said that his side were taught a lesson, but gives the coaching staff some things to work on.
