Poszło wszystko w porządku i wyjechali oni na nowych oponach na czwartym i piątym miejscu, za Leclerciem, Norrisem i Sainzem. W Mercedesie, na 15 okrążeń do mety, doszli do wniosku, że mogą to wygrać. Nowe opony, tylko trzech kierowców przed nimi - to nie może się nie udać. Obaj kierowcy Mercedesa jechali wtedy wybornie. Na cztery okrążenia do mety, Russell siedział dosłownie na skrzyni biegów drugiego Norrisa. Na ostatnim okrążeniu George Russell, jadący na trzecim miejscu, miał realne szanse na wyprzedzenie dwóch pierwszych kierowców i dojechanie do mety jako zwycięzca.
