Euros 2021 Italy vs Belgium | Explained: Leonardo Spinazzola injury
Football (soccer) injury expert Dr. Raj, DPT details Euros 2021 injury of Italy LB Leonard Spinazzola (achilles tendon rupture) including the typical return timeline for elite footballers and what the research says on post-injury performance | Football (soccer) injury analysis For reference, I’m a DPT (Doctor of Physio), sports scientist, researcher, youth football (soccer) coach, mindfulness enthusiast and owner of 3CB Performance —providing sports medicine, performance, and mindfulness services online and in-person at clinics in West LA and Valencia, CA. Feel free to hit me with questions and/or you can always find me on my website or follow on social media: Website: https://www.3cbperformance.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/3cbPerformance Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/3cbperformance/ Here’s a table of contents: - 0:00 What happened - 0:09 Mechanism Of Injury - 0:25 Return To Play Timeline - 0:33 Post Injury Performance - 0:49 The Upshot - 1:02 Outro Script: Hey it’s Raj from 3CB. Italian LB Leonardo Spinazzola suffered an achilles tendon injury vs Belgium, feared to be an achilles rupture. The mechanism of injury was a unique one with the player injuring the tendon while sprinting and taking an awkward step with his foot and lower leg outwardly rotated and then stumbling afterwards. Typically, achilles ruptures in footballers occur during first step acceleration. The average return to play for footballers is 7-8 months but there can be downstream effects - such as differences in calf strength - for as long as 2 years. Research on post-achilles rupture performance in elite footballers shows that most don’t get back to their prior level of performance until the 2nd season after returning. In Spinazzola’s case, he already has an extensive injury history so that timelines may be prolonged. I really feel for Leonardo because not only is this a serious injury with an extensive rehab but he was playing so, so well in the Euros with reported interest from major clubs. I wish him the best both mentally and physically.
