Words by Thomas Perrotta Campbelltown City have snapped up second place, and an all-important semi-final berth, after a shock loss by MetroStars in the final round of NPLSA action. Campbelltown needed to win and for MetroStars to drop points to finish second, but they couldn’t have got off to a worse start as Rhys Turner handed the visiting Modbury Jets the lead in the eighth minute. Their advantage was short-lived, as a brace by Blake Carpenter, including the winner in the 84th minute, saw Campbelltown come from behind to win 2-1. MetroStars, who occupied spots in the top two for much of the season, crumbled to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Adelaide Blue Eagles to slip to third. Adelaide Comets and Adelaide City’s 1-1 draw was ended after the automatic sprinklers turned on in injury time, but still sealed the minor premiership for the home side and finals football for the visitors. Cumberland United fell short of City on goal difference as they beat Para Hills Knights 1-0, while two first-half goals were enough to get Raiders over the line against Croydon Kings. Adelaide Olympic’s faint finals hopes were dashed by City and Cumberland’s results, but they were still unable to break the deadlock in their match against Adelaide United. With the ladder now set in stone, Comets and Campbelltown will face off in the two-legged semi-final for a spot in the Grand Final, MetroStars host City in the first of two elimination finals and the Kings and Raiders meet for the second week in a row in the second.
Words by Thomas Perrotta Ladder leaders Adelaide Comets have all but secured a top-two spot with one round to play in the NPL after a 4-0 victory that dented Cumberland United’s finals hopes. The damage was done early on in the match, with Comets skipper and Golden Boot leader Allan Welsh finding himself on the scoresheet twice inside the first 15 minutes and Ninko Beric registering their third before half time. Andreas Wiens pounced on a fumbled ball from a Tete Yengi shot to bundle home on 76 minutes, sealing all three points for Comets in style. Comets hold a three-point lead over third-placed Campbelltown City entering the final round, but their 13-goal buffer is unlikely to be overturned in the space of a week and should see them face off against MetroStars or Campbelltown in the two-legged Semi-Final. Croydon Kings’ double chance hopes were dashed by Campbelltown as the visitors came from behind to win 2-1, locking the Kings into fourth place in the process, while MetroStars also accounted for Adelaide City 2-1 to remain in the hunt for the minor premiership. Raiders’ 3-1 victory over Adelaide Blue Eagles effectively put themselves beyond the reach of seventh-placed Cumberland, who trail by three points and 14 goals, to all but ensure finals football. City, Cumberland and Adelaide Olympic, who defeated the relegated Para Hills Knights 4-0, sit within three points of one another and enter the final round fighting for the sixth and final major round berth. Adelaide United secured their own survival at the expense of Modbury Jets with a 2-0 triumph, condemning their defeated opponents to State League One football in 2021.
