Den Schlusspunkt setzte der wieder genesene Erling Haaland, der in der 72. Minute sein Comeback feierte und kurz danach gleich zum 3:1 traf. Doch die Begegnung hatte gerade erst begonnen, da lagen die Gäste aus Dortmund schon in Rückstand. Nach einer präzisen Hereingabe von Ridle Baku war VfL-Torjäger Weghorst zur Stelle und traf zum 1:0 (2.). Das Team von Trainer Marco Rose ließ sich von dem frühen Rückstand jedoch nicht beirren. Wolfsburg geriet in der Folge mächtig unter Druck – Thomas Meunier (12.) und Kapitän Marco Reus (26.) hätten für den Ausgleichstreffer sorgen können. Dies gelang dann in der 35. Minute Can mit einem souverän verwandelten Foulelfmeter. Maxence Lacroix hatte zuvor Reus im Strafraum zu Fall gebracht. VfL-Keeper Pavao Pervan, der für Stammtorhüter Koen Casteels das Tor hütete, hatte keine Abwehrmöglichkeit. Die Wolfsburger kamen in dieser Phase der Begegnung bestenfalls dazu, kleine Nadelstiche zu setzen und damit die eigene Defensive zu entlasten. Im zweiten Durchgang zeigte sich zunächst ein ähnliches Bild: Der BVB drängte auf ein zweites Tor. Nico Schulz hatte in der 48. Minute Pech, als er nur den linken Pfosten traf. Sieben Minuten später machte es Malen besser, der mit einem Flachschuss aus der Distanz für die Führung sorgte (55.). Erst nach diesem Rückstand wurde Wolfsburg mutiger. Aber mehr als eine augenscheinliche Spielfeldüberlegenheit kam dabei nicht heraus – wirklich gefährliche Aktionen im Strafraum der Dortmunder bekamen die 13.281 Zuschauer*innen nicht zu sehen. Die mitgereisten BVB-Fans bejubelten in der 73. Minute schließlich die Einwechslung von Haaland. Nur wenige Sekunden später kam der Top-Torjäger zu seinem ersten, etwas zu unpräzisen Torschuss (73.). Wolfsburg entfachte danach mächtig Druck und schnupperte am Ausgleich, doch Dodi Lukebakio verpasste das Tor erst aus kurzer Distanz per Kopfball (78.) und scheiterte dann mit seinem Abschluss an BVB-Torhüter Gregor Kobel (79.). Auf der Gegenseite sorgte Joker und Comebacker Haaland für die Entscheidung. Eine Flanke von Julian Brandt vollendete er mit dem linken Fuß zum 3:1-Endstand (81.). Es war sein zehntes Saisontor und sein insgesamt 50. Bundesliga-Treffer. Noch kein anderer Spieler erzielte diese Marke schneller (50 Partien). Der VfL Wolfsburg verliert damit das erste Bundesligaspiel unter Coach Florian Kohfeldt. Dem BVB ist dagegen eine gelungene Generalprobe für den Ligagipfel gegen Bayern München am nächsten Spieltag geglückt.
