Michael Jordan's 'Last Dance' jersey sells for record $10.1 million
Michael Jordan's 'Last Dance' jersey sells for record $10.1 million

Michael Jordan's jersey from the opening game of the 1998 NBA Finals sold for over $10 million at an auction on Thursday (September 15), making it the most expensive piece of game-worn sports memorabilia in history. The previous record was established earlier this year at Sotheby's, with Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' jersey fetching a staggering $9.3 million. Jordan's jersey was expected to fetch $3 to $5 million at Sotheby's "INVICTUS" auction and eclipsed the $3.7 million spent in May on Kobe Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers jersey worn in his rookie year -- the previous record for a basketball jersey. It was also significantly higher than the record for any item of Jordan sports memorabilia -- the $2.7 million paid for his autographed relic card from 1997-1998. The jersey from the famed 'Last Dance' season -- named after the 2020 ESPN/Netflix documentary chronicling Jordan and Chicago Bulls in their quest to win their sixth NBA championship in eight years -- attracted a total of 20 bids. ........................................................................................ Spain fans bitter after dramatic penalty shootout
Spain fans bitter after dramatic penalty shootout

Spain fans were disappointed after Luis Enrique's team lost 4-2 on penalties against Italy in Tuesday's (July 6) Euro 2020 semi-final. Italy reached the Euro 2020 final after edging Spain following a compelling 1-1 draw after extra time, completing a remarkable revival after failing to qualify for the last World Cup. "It is a bit bitter. We had everything. A penalty shootout is a lottery, and it hurts to lose at the end," said Spain fan Ignacio Gonzalez after watching the game on a big screen in Grinon, near Madrid. Jorginho cooly rolled the decisive kick past Spain keeper Unai Simon in the semi-final at Wembley after Alvaro Morata had been thwarted by a fine save from Italy's Gianluigi Donnarumma and Dani Olmo had blasted his effort over the bar. Morata, who had been dropped from the starting lineup after beginning all Spain's previous games, equalised with 10 minutes left, calmly slotting into the bottom corner after bursting forward and exchanging a one-two with Olmo. The goal was the latest twist in an eventful few weeks for Morata, who has been booed and even faced death threats from Spain supporters after a couple of poor showings, before redeeming himself with a crucial goal in the 5-3 win over Croatia. Spain looked more likely to find a winner in the remaining minutes and in extra time but could not manage a second shootout victory after prevailing against Switzerland in the quarter-finals and once again Morata was a crucial part of the story, but not in the way he would have wanted. ........................................................................................ England fans over the moon, celebrate emphatic 4-0 win
England fans over the moon, celebrate emphatic 4-0 win

England put aside caution and fear to deliver a performance full of confidence bordering on swagger as they swept aside Ukraine 4-0 on Saturday to reach the Euro 2020 semi-finals, looking genuine title contenders in the process. Wednesday's opponents Denmark may offer a sterner test at Wembley than Ukraine provided at the Stadio Olimpico, and an eventual final against Spain or Italy is a different matter altogether, but if there were any doubts about England's credentials they were answered in Rome. Harry Kane scored twice - putting to bed the doubts raised by his sluggish form in the group stage - but from back to front England played with poise and confidence. The centre-halves, John Stones and Harry Maguire, took care of their defensive duties but also looked composed and elegant on the ball. Left-back Luke Shaw was outstanding, making his bursts down the flank and providing the pinpoint crosses for headed goals from Maguire and Kane. Raheem Sterling on the left set up Kane for England's fourth minute opener and was constantly asking questions of the Ukraine defence with his dribbling and cuts in from the flank. On the opposite wing, making his first start of the tournament, Jadon Sancho, with his deft touch, speed and smart movement, showed why Manchester United spent over 70 million pounds ($96.75 million) to sign him from Borussia Dortmund. With a three-goal lead established by the 50th minute, manager Gareth Southgate was able to take off players facing a possible suspension from another yellow card and also to show the unmatched range of options available to him. Jordan Henderson, whose involvement has been restricted as he returned from injury, came on and promptly scored his first international goal in his 62nd appearance. Marcus Rashford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin came on up front and 18-year-old Jude Bellingham also got some minutes in midfield. All that and the talent of Jack Grealish and Phil Foden was left on the bench, a real indication of the strength in depth of Southgate's squad. REAL QUALITY England's football in the group stage and in the 2-0 win against Germany in the round of 16, had been organised and functional but once Maguire made it 2-0 right after the break the real quality of this team began to show. There were moments when it was almost Spanish style tiki-taka football with England keeping possession and creating passing triangles around midfield. Sterling's cheeky pass with his heel to set up Shaw for his cross for Kane's second and England's third was the sign of a player brimming with belief. Ukraine were no match for England but the Three Lions have laboured against that level of team in the past and have frozen at the business end of the big tournaments -- this time they look to be peaking at just the right moment. Added to all the positive football and sharpness in attack, England kept their record of not conceding a goal in the tournament. It was a tough exit for a Ukraine side that have fought so admirably to reach the last eight, but it sets up what should be a thrilling week of football in London. Italy and Spain clash on Tuesday at Wembley before the home favourites, looking for their first final since 1966, play the following day against Denmark at the same stadium. After the World Cup last-four loss to Croatia in 2018, this was the second straight major tournament semi-final for Southgate's side and now the pressure is on to go all the way. "This group are not settling for a semi-final," said Maguire. In Rome, they looked like title contenders. Now they have to prove their worth back on home soil. ........................................................................................ Italian fans jubilant as their side advance to Euro 2020 semi-finals, Belgium fans not too upset
Italian fans jubilant as their side advance to Euro 2020 semi-finals, Belgium fans not too upset

Rome was awash in the colours of its national team on Friday (July 2) as hundreds of fans celebrated the Azzurri's 2-1 Euro 2020 quarter-final victory over Belgium. Supporters roared in delight at a fan zone in Rome's Piazza del Popolo and later celebrated in Piazza Venezia, after the victory at the Allianz Arena stadium in Munich. Italians must have been the only football fans not begging for extra time near the end of their team's 2-1 Euro 2020 quarter-final win over Belgium as the high-octane clash delivered the best international football can offer. Like two heavyweight boxers trading punches in a title fight, Italy and Belgium threw everything they had at each other throughout a contest packed with pace, energy, tactical know-how and individual skill. Italy's relentless pressure had Belgium on the ropes after they fell 2-0 behind to a Nicolo Barella strike and a Lorenzo Insigne curler before Romelu Lukaku pulled one back with a penalty on the stroke of halftime. With Lukaku misfiring in the second half as he spurned a guilt-edged chance to equalize, it was 19-year-old forward Jeremy Doku who carried Belgium's effort with electrifying pace and close control. Having tormented his markers on the left flank all evening, Doku won Belgium's penalty and nearly scored the goal of the tournament after a dazzling solo run. Italy have scored 11 goals so far at Euro 2020, an Italian record in a single European Championship, as they seem to have all the ingredients for a title charge. With a 100% record, Italy head into their semi-final with Spain confident of reaching a second final in the last three editions of the tournament, having lost 4-0 to their next opponents in the 2012 showpiece match. ........................................................................................
