Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), often referred to simply as Jiu-Jitsu, is a grappling-based martial art, self-defense system, and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting, leverage, and submission techniques. Developed in Brazil in the early 20th century by the Gracie family and other pioneers, BJJ evolved from Japanese Judo and traditional Jiu-Jitsu brought to South America by Mitsuyo Maeda. The core philosophy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that a smaller, weaker individual can successfully defend against a larger, stronger opponent through superior technique, positioning, and control. Practitioners learn to take opponents down, achieve dominant positions, and force submissions via joint locks, chokes, and other holds. Training emphasizes live sparring (rolling), technical drilling, and progressive skill development. BJJ features a structured belt ranking system — white, blue, purple, brown, and black — and is governed in competition by organizations such as the IBJJF. It has become a cornerstone of modern mixed martial arts (MMA) and continues to grow globally as both a competitive sport and a highly effective self-defense method.
