The Most Dangerous Soccer Field 🏟️🤕
I was watching this clip of Messi and couldn’t believe how bad the field was, so I decided to look into it… Turns out, it’s worse than I ever could have imagined. This could be the most dangerous field in professional soccer. 🤕🏟️ Why? Because technically it’s not even a football pitch. For the last decade, MLS side NYCFC has shared a stadium with the New York Yankees—a less than ideal arrangement for several reasons: A. It’s too small. 70x100 yards is exact minimum size requirement to play in the MLS. B. The sod. In order to cover the infield, the club has to lay out strips of sod before almost every match. While this looks the part—it really isn’t effective, mainly because it’s not rooted to the ground, making for terrible pitch conditions whenever it’s too wet/dry. Pretty shocking this sort of thing is allowed in professional footy, but ig space is a pretty big commodity in NYC. When it comes to soccer players, I think we can all agree Lionel Messi is the GOAT. However, since joining the MLS back in summer 2023, I've noticed an interesting trend: The Argentinian seems to get a strange amount of favorable calls from referees. Now, you could simply chalk this up to aura, inexperienced officials, or even just a random coincidence, but for me, the effect remains the same: Messi is the most protected footballer of 2024. Sports stadiums in the USA vs Europe… Typically, when a stadium gets out of date in the States, they knock it down. While it’s sad to lose the history, owners generally feeling it’s too costly to fix them up. In Europe, the opposite is often true, with clubs like Real Madrid and FC Barcelona instead opting to renovate their iconic grounds. Then, there’s Manchester United. The Premier League side is currently caught in a limbo—Old Trafford hasn’t been updated since 2006, resulting in the venue falling into immense disrepair. After months of speculation, it appears the club is pursuing a $2.6bn plan to rebuild the stadium next door, resulting in a huge debate amongst fans as to the importance of it’s history.
