W Mercedesie, na 15 okrążeń do mety, doszli do wniosku, że mogą to wygrać. Nowe opony, tylko trzech kierowców przed nimi - to nie może się nie udać. Obaj kierowcy Mercedesa jechali wtedy wybornie. Na cztery okrążenia do mety, Russell siedział dosłownie na skrzyni biegów drugiego Norrisa. Na ostatnim okrążeniu George Russell, jadący na trzecim miejscu, miał realne szanse na wyprzedzenie dwóch pierwszych kierowców i dojechanie do mety jako zwycięzca. “Not good enough, too sensitive and also really too slow”. That was Max Verstappen’s damning indictment of the upgraded 2024 Red Bull, during a Hungarian Grand Prix weekend in which he failed to feature in the fight for victory and became embroiled in furious radio exchanges with his own Formula 1 team. Such a crushing defeat never goes down well with someone as ultra-competitive as Verstappen of course, but this happened on an F1 weekend he declared especially important because of the introduction of Red Bull’s biggest upgrade of the season.
