We didn't play our game, we were not ourselves - D'Tigress head coach, Rena Wakama ...As host France lockdown Nigeria's D'Tigress to laminate their ticket to the quarter-finals women's basketball tournament By Maxwell Kumoye "We didn't play our game. We were not ourselves. What helped us secure the win on Monday we didn't bring today.” That is the verdict of Nigeria head coach, Rena Wakama, after D'Tigress went down to the French in their second Group B encounter on Thursday. She explained that, it was a tough battle and a tough outcome for the team that is eyeing a place in the quarter-finals. “It's tough when you let another team shoot 63 percent inside the paint. It's hard to beat anybody.” Despite the defeat, coach Rena Wakama believe that the girls will fight back on Sunday against Canada. “We need to get back to our ways." Canada are yet to win a game since the basketball tournament started. They lost to France on Monday by the same margin Nigeria lost to the hosts, 75-54. They were also beaten by Australia that crumbled under the weight of Nigeria. It finished 70-65 in favour of the Opal. The win means host France are through to the quarter finals of the women basketball tournament of the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris. They secured their passage to the last eight with a 75-54 lockdown of Nigeria. Nigeria had played with typical courage and on the front foot to almost keep pace with their opponents for much of the first-half. However, the wheels came off for D'Tigress when France suffocated their offense completely and held them to single digits in the third quarter at just 8 points. The depth of France was simply everything in this game - at least in stark contrast to Nigeria. The difference in bench scoring was enormous with the hosts racking up 37 points and their opponents only 9. Nigeria’s 54 points are their lowest in a single game at the Olympics: they have now lost three games by more than 20 points in the competition and two of those happened against France (today and in the 2020 edition (87-62). The fans weren't supposed to be on the pitch until the Bruce Springsteen concert next Thursday but there was no stopping the Cork public celebrating their heroes as they somehow kept their championship dreams alive. The Rebels looked down and out with four minutes to play as they fell four behind a charging Limerick, inspired by 3-03 from Séamus Flanagan. Despite such a desperate situation, they found the energy and courage deep down to outscore the All-Ireland champions by 1-04 to 0-01 from there. It came down to a game-defining black-card penalty decision by Seán Stack in the fourth and final minute of stoppage time. Shane Kingston was hauled down by Kyle Hayes down the left, a move the Dublin ref deemed an attempt to deny a goal-scoring opportunity. -TIMESTAMPS- 00:00 - Intro. 00:11 - It’s a big performance, we were really good against a really good team in great form who asked a lot of questions, we responded really well and were determined, played with a lot of courage. 00:51 - First time midfield have played together in a while?: Very pleased, really good game for Thomas to come back with the way they play, he stepped up and had a great performance. 01:33 - What is it about that trio? Everything but even when we play others we’ve won big games, depends on the opponent and the game. 02:00 - Psychological boost, send shockwaves through title race? Great for us for the confidence and the belief that we can do this, enjoy it and then get back to work tomorrow because we have a big one on Sunday. 02:40 - Feel sympathy for Pochettino?: All the sympathy in the world with everything he has been through and what he’s doing, we analysed seven games from them and they deserved to win every one, hopefully he gets what he deserves. 03:13 - Does it take anything away? No I love winning! 03:25 - We have missed Partey, he’s a big player for us and has given us other possibilities, the team has resources and we have to find different ways of winning. 04:15 - Some of the numbers from the players are unreal, the desire from the players, you can see they want to win it. 04:45 - Did you do anything to lift players?: Just gave the reality, sometimes the margins are so small, you have to react and face the moment, if you are able to do it for nine months you are able to win it! 05:31 - Sweet moment for Havertz?: Unbelievable in all departments and to score two goals in the way he did, his contribution was great and sure he’s very pleased. 05:53 - Joy from the crowd translating to the players?: They have to feel this team represents the club in the best way and they see it, we want them to have fun and enjoy it. 06:24 - Revenge?: I don’t think it’s revenge @HaytersTV – Football Up Close.
