𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙞𝙜 𝙒𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙍𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣 with Chloë Clark is back with a championship-packed week across the conference. Championship season is in full swing as Cal Poly claims the women’s golf title in Maui, Long Beach State’s Madison Le earning the individual title, and Cal Poly beach volleyball captured its fourth Big West crown as Long Beach State also claimed a spot in the NC bracket. UC Santa Barbara sweeps both men’s and women’s tennis titles and heads to the NCAA stage, while men’s volleyball makes history with three teams, Long Beach State, Hawai‘i, and UC Irvine, dancing in the national tournament. Cal State Fullerton softball stays red hot, extending its win streak to 11 and locking up a third straight regular-season title, while four teams have already punched their tickets to The Big West Championship, with one spot still up for grabs. On the diamond, Cal Poly and UC San Diego are deadlocked atop the baseball standings as the race heats up with just three weeks to go. Plus, Hawai‘i women’s water polo caps another strong season with a third straight NCAA appearance, and more championship action is just around the corner across golf and track & field. All that and more in this week’s 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙞𝙜 𝙒𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙍𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣. #𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱

Full Game: Friday Night Friction at the Stadium | Bulls vs. Pacers (December 16, 1988)
Full Game: Friday Night Friction at the Stadium | Bulls vs. Pacers (December 16, 1988)

Outside Chicago Stadium, the snow was drifting lightly and the wind was whipping off the lake, turning the city into the kind of holiday postcard the Chamber of Commerce loves. Inside, however, the Chicago Bulls were busy nearly handing a gift-wrapped victory to a struggling Indiana Pacers squad. What should have been a blowout turned into a "rough sleigh ride" for the 17,488 in attendance, highlighting the fragile nature of a Bulls team still trying to find its identity after the off-season trade that sent Charles Oakley to New York for Bill Cartwright. The Bulls held a commanding 19-point lead that evaporated as the Pacers' Wayman Tisdale began to exploit a soft interior defense. Indiana clawed back to within a single point with just 93 seconds remaining, exposing the recurring narrative of the 1988-89 season: if Michael Jordan doesn't do everything, the Bulls do very little. Jordan, playing the role of a hardwood Scrooge, finally slammed the door. He drew contact, converted the necessary free throws, and delivered a signature defensive rejection on a Chuck Person attempt to preserve the win. The night’s subtext, however, belonged to Bill Cartwright. While Jordan finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds, Cartwright recorded a dubious "triple-double"—23 points, 10 rebounds, and a staggering 10 turnovers. The big man’s lack of coordination was a source of constant irritation for Jordan, who often complained that Cartwright "fumbled" away the team's momentum. Yet, in a rare display of leadership that pierced the post-game tension, Cartwright gathered his teammates for a speech. Even delivered in his trademark raspy whisper, the message was clear: the sloppy play and near-collapses had to stop. This game serves as a window into the growing pains of a dynasty. With the arrival of Craig Hodges providing much-needed perimeter spacing, the pieces were beginning to move into place, but the friction between Jordan and his supporting cast remained the primary obstacle. It was a victory, but one that left the Bulls at a modest 11-10, still searching for the consistency required to challenge the elite of the Eastern Conference. Poker, Panthers, and Pork Roll: Sunny Mehta KILLED his Homecoming Presser
Poker, Panthers, and Pork Roll: Sunny Mehta KILLED his Homecoming Presser

Zach Berman opened the episode by discussing some fun local topics, challenging the use of "Taylor Ham" versus "Pork Roll" and jokingly criticizing Sunny Mehta’s Mets fandom. He firmly corrected that "Pork Roll" is the name of the product, while "Taylor Ham" is just a brand, much like "Chips Ahoy" is a brand of cookies 00:00:29. This playful introduction set the tone for a deeper discussion about the new era of New Jersey Devils hockey under Sunny Mehta, emphasizing the excitement and high expectations following Mehta’s first press conference. Shifting to hockey, Zach Berman provided an extensive breakdown of Sunny Mehta’s introductory press conference as the sixth general manager in Devils history. He praised Mehta’s approach, calling the presser close to a "grand slam" and noting the depth, candor, and insight Mehta offered. While some caution was advised—press conferences are often just talk—Zach Berman appreciated Mehta’s step-by-step mentality, his refusal to overpromise about an immediate Stanley Cup, and his plan to build methodically, "brick by brick," rather than rushing lofty expectations 00:02:17. A key point was how Mehta’s background in poker influences his management style. Drawing on Mehta’s "tight and aggressive" poker philosophy, Zach Berman noted Mehta’s emphasis on patience, discipline, and boldness when the right moment arises 00:13:40. Mehta plans to apply this logic to roster construction—waiting for the right opportunities and then acting decisively. Additionally, Mehta highlighted the importance of analytically-informed, collaborative decision-making, aggregating diverse perspectives, and striving for smart, objective decisions repeatedly to maximize the odds of success 00:12:25. Finally, Zach Berman detailed ownership’s continuing commitment to success, including spinning to the cap and putting their trust in Mehta as the sole decision-maker rather than hiring a president of hockey operations 00:21:27. Mehta’s deep fandom, local ties, and genuine excitement for the GM role further endeared him to both Berman and the fanbase. As the organization heads into a new era, Mehta faces key decisions—around the roster, coaching, and front office—which will test his philosophies and drive to restore the Devils to perennial contention while embracing his status as a true New Jersey original.
