Greener electricity from dung: An Indian coal state | India News | NewsRme
In accordance with global attempts to phase out fossil fuels, one of India's largest coal mining centres, which is also home to extensive forests and a huge indigenous population, will soon start utilizing mounds of cow dung to power rural enterprises and homes. As the mineral-rich state of Chhattisgarh prepares to transition away from coal, its chief minister, Bhupesh Baghel, said the government aims to train local women how to create and sell sustainable energy. "There is a global movement toward green energy," Baghel said, adding that although coal will continue to cover his state's energy demands, the objective is to find alternate sources. "We have considered the future of our people, especially the indigenous population, in opting to shift away from coal gradually. We want to establish a structure to safeguard them, as well as our forests and wildlife "In an interview, he said. India is the world's second-largest coal importer, user, and producer, with the fourth-largest deposits, the majority of which are in Chhattisgarh. India declared intentions at the COP26 climate meeting last year to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and to increase the amount of renewables in its energy mix from roughly 38% last year to 50% by 2030. In accordance with this, Baghel's administration implemented a circular economy plan in 2020 in order to enhance the lives of the more than 40% of Chhattisgarh inhabitants who live in poverty.
