Day 11 and a classic Vuelta stage that has featured several times in the past. Favouring strong climbers for the challenging hills, this year's stage is shorter than its predecessors around the ‘muro’, at 133km long, that will see a breakaway likely form, with the mountains being too much for the sprinters. That is not to say they won't feature however, with an intermediate sprint also packed in, the stage is likely to be climatic and fast paced. Coming down from the climb in the final kilometers riders will climb at an average of 9%, towards Valdepeñas de Jaén to take the win. Subscribe to GCN+ for cycling as you have never seen it before! The first rest day over and riders now face a route that is seemingly flat, running along the Mediterranean Coast before turning inland to tackle a 5km climb with an average of 8%, before the final descent into Rincón de la Victoria. Last time Roquetas de Mar hosted La Vuelta was three years ago, and this year it starts the stage. The rest of the stage is predominantly flat with one intermediate sprint at around 150km in, followed almost immediately by a category climb. Whilst then not an overly technical finish the summit of the climb will be a good indicator as those who will contest for the win on the descent. With many of the flatter stages now completed, La Vuelta moves back towards the mountains in what is one of the most challenging stages yet. Over the 188 kilometer stage between Puerto Lumbreras and the top of Alto de Velefique. A stage resembling that of a similar one in 2009 that saw the same summit finish, with an average gradient of 6.4% for 13.2km. Whilst the first 4km present cyclists with a much steeper average of 10%, before then traversing a series of hairpins to the top. Subscribe to GCN+ for cycling as you have never seen it before! The seventh stage, and the end of the first week. The riders are treated to the first proper mountain stage of La Vuelta, packing in a whole six category climbs and a summit finish just for good measure in just 152k. A chance for defending champion Primož Roglič to do well, this challenging terrain will see riders face climbs between 6.4%, and gradients up to 16% on the Balcón de Alicante. The last few hundred meters are a nice respite for riders after an excruciating climb, which could lead to a quick and fast paced victory where anything could happen. Almost a week in and the Vuelta is in full swing. Stage six takes riders down from Requena, at almost 700m above sea level through several descents and accents that pose no real challenge. By the 75th kilometer the stage flattens out in time for an intermediate sprint at the 98th km. However, the likelihood of the sprinters making it all the way to the finish seems uncertain. With little less than 3km riders are met with a steep incline of an average of over 9% for around 2km. A final increase to 21% with 150 meters to go, a solo win or small breakaway seems likely to conclude the classically Spanish stage race. Another flat stage, and another chance for sprinters such as Fabio Jakobsen and Jasper Philipsen to increase their positions on the points classification. Whilst today’s stage is another flat one that is bound to be the victory of a sprinter, bear in mind, looks can be deceiving. With long exposed roads in between Tarancón - Albacete, the likelihood of the peloton being split into echelons and breaks seems high. An intermediate sprint is thrown in for good measure at around 130km in, mixed with unpredictable weather that will for sure result in a fast paced conclusion to the stage.
