Day 3 of 30 Days. 30 Iconic Moments. There is one image from the 1994 World Cup Final that football will never forget. Not a celebration. Not a trophy lift. Not a goal. A man standing at the penalty spot, head down, eyes closed, ponytail still. The ball sailing over the crossbar. And 94,000 people falling completely silent. That man was Roberto Baggio. And in that single moment, the weight of an entire nation left with the ball. July 17, 1994. Rose Bowl, Pasadena. Italy vs Brazil. The World Cup Final had finished 0–0 after 120 minutes of football. It came down to penalties. Italy had already missed two. Brazil had not missed any. It was sudden death. Everything rested on Roberto Baggio — the man who had almost single-handedly carried Italy to that final. He had scored five goals in the knockout rounds. He had rescued Italy from elimination multiple times, often in the last moments. The entire tournament had been his. He placed the ball. He stepped back. He ran up. And he blazed it over the bar. Brazil were World Champions. Italy were broken. And Baggio stood there alone, hands on his hips, staring at the ground, unable to look up. He later said — "That penalty still haunts me. If I could erase a moment from my life, it would be that one. But it made me who I am." He was the best player at that entire World Cup. He dragged a team that had no right to reach the final all the way to the last kick of the tournament. And yet — the only thing anyone remembers is the miss. That is the cruelty of football. The Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the San Antonio Spurs, 114-109, in Game 4 of their NBA Western Conference Semifinals at Target Center in Minneapolis. The game turned in favour of Minnesota significantly in the second quarter when Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was ejected following a Flagrant 2 foul on Naz Reid. Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves, scoring 16 of his game-high 36 points in the final period alone. Jaden McDaniels and Reid added 15 and 14 points, respectively. With Wembanyama out of the game after just 12 minutes and 4 points, De’Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper led the scoring for the Spurs with 24 points each. While Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell contributed 20 and 14 points, respectively.
