Sus dos peleas anteriores contra Max Holloway fueron muy parejas, pero esta vez el australiano dominó cada segundo del combate. Conectó mejores golpes y sobretodo se vio mucho más rápido. Parecía que Holloway golpeaba en cámara lenta a comparación del campeón, y desde el primer round fue evidente que esta velocidad sería determinante en la pelea. Volkanovski cortó a Max en la ceja derecha desde el segundo round y de ahí en adelante el retador se vio tremendamente golpeado y afectado contra un campeón que no disminuyó el ritmo en absoluto durante los 25 minutos de la pelea. Al final el resultado fue contundente y no hubo ni un gramo de controversia esta vez. 50 a 45 para el campeona que así llega a 12 victorias seguidas en la UFC con 5 victorias en peleas de campeonato. Es difícil imaginar quién será el siguiente en enfrentar al campeón después de verse tan dominante y haber descartado a los principales oponentes de la división de peso pluma. Únicamente queda ver si Alex es promovido al número 1 libra por libra o si debe hacer más para superar a Kamaru Usman en esa lista. Entonces llegó el evento estelar con una exótica y llamativa entrada del campeón Israel Adesanya que apareció con la música del Undertaker, la popular estrella de la WWE, y un frasco con las cenizas de su rival Jared Cannonier. Normalmente los rivales de Adesanya se dividen en dos categorías, los que van al frente con todo buscando el golpe ganador, pero se arriesgan a ser contragolpeados, o los que son más cautelosos esperando el momento de atacar, disminuyendo el riesgo, pero prácticamente abriendo la puerta a que Israel conecte golpes a distancia y se lleve una clara decisión. Cannonier cayó en el segundo grupo, no es conocido por sus derribos así que se sabía que sus posibilidades de victoria eran reducidas, pero tampoco fue al frente tanto como se esperaba y claramente perdió los dos primeros asaltos. En el tercero la pelea se emparejó y Jared conectó varios golpes importantes que le dieron el round.
