Dolphins vs Knights, day 4, Pietermaritzburg, match drawn

Dolphins vs Knights Rain and bad light ultimately proved to be the main winner as the 4-Day Domestic Series encounter between the Dolphins and Knights ended in a draw at the City Oval in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday. The inclement weather, which led to no play on day two and just over 50 overs squeezed in on day three, again briefly returned on the final day, allowing for only 72 overs to be sent down. To their credit, both teams tried to initiate a result, before the visitors finished the game on 181 for three in pursuit of a target of 295. The Central Franchise resumed at the start of play on 174 for six, but three wickets in 15 balls early on by Keith Dudgeon (3-32) gave the Dolphins hope. However, Rudi Second, who ended unbeaten on 80 (138 balls, 11×4), found support in a stubborn Tshepo Ntuli (one not out) to frustrate the home side, before they declared on 206 for nine. The hosts then attacked their way to 146 for three declared, thanks to quick-fire half-centuries by Sarel Erwee (57 off 72 balls, 10×4, 1×6) and Khaya Zondo (59 not out off 45 balls, 10×4). With only 35 overs available, the Dolphins needed to strike, and strike early too. And they did that through Ethan Bosch (3-44) after he removed Grant Mokoena (2) in the first over, but a partnership of 126 between Raynard van Tonder (60 off 89 balls, 6×4) and Keegan Petersen (71 not out off 92 balls, 7×4) ended all hope of a result. Play was also halted in between due to poor light as the weather again had its say, while right-hander Petersen, one of the stars of the season, went past 5 000 first-class career runs. Dolphins 354-7 decl (MJ Ackerman 137, S Muthusamy 89, K Zondo 34, G Roelofsen 32, E Bosch 22 not out; T Mnyaka 3-71, ZC Qwabe 2-46, T Ntuli 2-111) & 146-3 decl (K Zondo 59 not out, SJ Erwee 57; PE Kruger 1-8, T Mnyaka 1-14, ZC Qwabe 1-53) Knights 206-9 decl (RS Second 80 not out, SC van Schalkwyk 35, TG Mokoena 27, AGS Gous 27; E Bosch 4-82, KJ Dudgeon 3-32) & 181-3 (KD Petersen 71 not out, R van Tonder 60, RS Second 32 not out; E Bosch 3-44) Match drawn Footage: Cricket South Africa

Knights vs Cape Cobras A second successive career-best score by Keegan Petersen in the same match completed an excellent draw for the Knights against the log-leading Cape Cobras on the final day of their match in Bloemfontein. The right-hander, who hit 161 in the first innings, went four runs better second time round by amassing an unbeaten 165 (261 balls, 18×4, 2×6) as the hosts lost just one day-four wicket at the Mangaung Oval. There was also a century for captain Pite van Biljon, the 17th of his career after he struck 105 off 138 balls (11×4, 3×6) and shared in an unbroken third-wicket stand that was worth a fixture record 213. The Knights eventually ended on 360 for two when the skipper shook hands with opposite number Dane Piedt, whose side remain comfortably ahead of the pack at the top of the standings. The Central Franchise started the final day on 135 for one, and there was hope for the visitors early on when Raynard van Tonder was bowled by Simon Khomari for 57 (126 balls, 9×4) with only 12 added to the overnight total. But that was as good as it got for the Cape side as Petersen, who completed his 13th and 14th first-class tons in the game, and Van Biljon dug in. The pair surpassed the previous best third-wicket partnerships in the fixture held by Van Biljon himself and Theunis de Bruyn of 109 (2016/17), and the 200 between Justin Ontong and Stiaan van Zyl (2012/13). The end result left the Cobras just under 20 points ahead of the Highveld Lions at the summit, with the Knights in fourth place. Knights 319 (KD Petersen 161, RS Second 53, SC van Schalkwyk 22, T Ntuli 22 not out, ZC Qwabe 21; D Paterson 3-69, LB Williams 3-91, M Nabe 2-40, DL Piedt 1-66) & 360-2 (KD Petersen 165 not out, PJ van Biljon 105 not out, R van Tonder 57t; M Nabe 1-25) Cape Cobras 470 (DL Piedt 114, DG Bedingham 112, K Verreynne 89, M Nabe 68, JF Smith 30; SC van Schalkwyk 4-67, T Mnyaka 3-109, R McLaren 2-64) Match drawn Footage: Cricket South Africa

Knights vs Cape Cobras A maiden first-class century by Dane Piedt highlighted the penultimate day of the 4-Day Domestic Series encounter between the Knights and the Cape Cobras in Bloemfontein on Sunday. The visiting captain made 114 (145 balls, 11x4, 3x6) to surpass his previous best score (92 vs the Highveld Lions, 2013/14) to help his side amass 470 in response to the hosts' first-innings 319. But the reply of the Central Franchise went well through day three after they reached the close on 135 for one – whittling down the 151 deficit to trail by just 16. First-innings star Keegan Petersen was again going well with an unbeaten 59 (99 balls, 99 fours), while former South Africa U19 captain Raynard van Tonder (56 off 114 balls, 9 fours) was also excelling alongside him. The log-leading Cobras had started day three well-placed on 249 for four, but quickly lost overnight pair Jason Smith (30), their other centurion David Bedingham (114 off 145 balls, 11 fours, 3 sixes) and Dane Paterson (11). Shadley van Schalkwyk (4-67) did most of the damage, which saw the Cobras slip to 281 for seven and in danger of surrendering their good position. But Piedt shared a 47-run eighth-wicket stand with Lizaad Williams (18), before adding a remarkable competition record partnership with Mthiwekhaya Nabe. The pair added 132 for the ninth wicket, breaking a record set six years ago by Simon Harmer and Ayabulela Gqamane of 129 for the Warriors against the Titans in 2012/13. Nabe played an equally important role as that of Piedt by scoring his highest first-class score of 68 (87 balls, 9x4, 1x6) – a splendid effort considering his previous best score was only 12. That boosted the Cape side to a strong position and they seized even more control of the game when Nabe removed Grant Mokoena for 15 to leave the Knights on 22 for one, but Petersen and Van Tonder kept their side in the game, the latter thanks to his second franchise 50, as the game was left finely poised at the Mangaung Oval. Knights 319 (KD Petersen 161, RS Second 53, SC van Schalkwyk 22, T Ntuli 22 not out, ZC Qwabe 21; D Paterson 3-69, LB Williams 3-91, M Nabe 2-40, DL Piedt 1-66) & 135-1 (KD Petersen 59 not out, R van Tonder 56 not out; M Nabe 1-25) Cape Cobras 470 (DL Piedt 114, DG Bedingham 112, K Verreynne 89, M Nabe 68, JF Smith 30; SC van Schalkwyk 4-67, T Mnyaka 3-109, R McLaren 2-64) Knights trail by 16 runs with 9 second-innings wickets in hand Footage: Cricket South Africa

David Bedingham’s second franchise century upstaged a career-best 4-Day Domestic Series score by Keegan Petersen as the Cape Cobras took control after two days of battle against the Knights in Bloemfontein on Saturday. The visitors reached stumps on 249 for four at the halfway stage of the game, 70 runs behind the home sides’ 319 all out earlier in the day. Rookie Bedingham, playing in his maiden four-day season, was not out on 107 (210 balls, 8×4, 3×6), also his best score at this level. Earlier, it was Petersen who continued his gutsy innings by moving from his overnight 126 to end on 161 (286 balls, 21×4) at the Mangaung Oval. It capped a remarkable recovery for the Central Franchise after they had slipped to three for three at the start of the match on day one. They resumed day two on 241 for eight and added 78 for the final two wickets, thanks to Petersen, Tshepo Ntuli (22) and Zakhele Qwabe (21). The latter was run out before Petersen was last man out to Mthiwekhaya Nabe (2-40), with Dane Paterson (3-69) finishing as the pick of the bowlers. Like the Knights, the log-leading Cobras also made a poor start after Shadley van Schalkwyk’s (2-23) double left them on four for two. Another strike by Thandolwethu Mnyaka (1-60) left them in further strife on 35 for three, but a fine 162-run fourth-wicket stand between Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne, who made 89 (150 balls, 12×4), wrestled control completely back in favour of the visiting side. Even though the young wicketkeeper fell 11 runs shy of his century, Jason Smith (29 not out) helped share an unbroken 52-run fifth wicket stand that took the Cape side in control to the close. Knights 319 (KD Petersen 161, RS Second 53, SC van Schalkwyk 22, T Ntuli 22 not out, ZC Qwabe 21; D Paterson 3-69, LB Williams 3-91, M Nabe 2-40, DL Piedt 1-66) Cape Cobras 249-4 (DG Bedingham 107 not out, K Verreynne 89, JF Smith 29 not out; SC van Schalkwyk 2-23, R McLaren 1-35, T Mnyaka 1-60) Knights won the toss and elected to bat Footage: Cricket South Africa
