Sri Lanka beat South Africa in the first test of two match series. Perera and Vishwa Fernando put on an unbeaten 78 in a last-wicket partnership to secure only Sri Lanka's second win in 14 Test matches in South Africa. You can follow स्पोर्ट्स तक (Sports Tak) on: Sports Tak Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/sportstak Sports Tak Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sportstak/ Sports Tak Twitter: https://twitter.com/sports_tak SportsTak Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sportstakofficial/ Sports Tak, as the name suggests, is all about sports. KUSAL PERERA played one of the most significant innings for Sri Lanka outside the sub-continent to get his side over the line for a one-wicket victory over the Standard Bank Proteas in the first Castle Lager Test match at Kingsmead on Saturday. In plain statistics Perera (153 not out off 200 balls, 12 fours and 5 sixes) scored more than half the 304 runs needed for victory and shared an unbroken 10th wicket partnership of 78 with Vishwa Fernando who stuck it out during a time when the Proteas could take the second new ball in the final few overs to finish on 6 off 27 balls. For both batsmen it was their highest Test match score. Castle Lager Man of the Match Perera finished with 204 runs in the match which itself was a remarkable statistic as he had only scored 686 runs in his previous 14 Test matches. It was his second career century with both of them having been made on the African continent. Sri Lanka’s total was the third highest successful runs chase at Kingsmead and their victory was only their second in South Africa – the previous one having also occurred at this venue in 2011. If Perera was the day’s hero then Fernando was not far behind him, particularly taking into account the 8 wickets he took as well (4 in each innings), nor was Dhananjaya de Silva whose 96-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Perera also had a lot to do with the outcome. The Proteas twice looked to hold a winning hand, first when Dale Steyn took two wickets with successive deliveries in the morning session and then when Keshav Maharaj broke through into the Sri Lankan tail with 3 wickets. But they could not get the wickets of Perera or Fernando. The Proteas were not helped by the hamstring niggle suffered by Vernon Philander that kept him off the field for the entire final day and they will also be left to reflect on the fact that their batsmen did not make enough runs in either innings. The Sunfoil Education Trust (SET) benefited to the extent of R217 500 from the boundaries and sixes hit and wickets taken by both sides during the course of the match. The second Castle Lager Test starts at St. George’s Park next Thursday.
FAF DU PLESSIS shared successive half-century partnerships with Quinton de Kock and Vernon Philander to set a tough target for Sri Lanka on the third day of the first Castle Lager Test match at Kingsmead on Friday. The Standard Bank Proteas were bowled out for 259 in their second innings thanks in the main to Du Plessis’ innings of 90 (182 balls, 11 fours) and 55 from De Kock (62 balls, 6 fours) to set Sri Lanka a target of 304 – it would represent the third highest successful chase at this particular venue. Sri Lanka reached an early close brought about by bad light on 83/3, needing a further 221 to claim a famous upset victory. Du Plessis, who shared stands of 96 with De Kock and 60 with Philander, seemed certain to record his 10th career century and his second of the current home season until he totally misjudged the line of a delivery from the Sri Lankan left-arm seamer, Vishwa Fernando, and was trapped leg before wicket without offering a shot. His dismissal was part of a remarkable Proteas collapse that saw the last 5 wickets fall for just 8 runs against the combined onslaught from Fernando and the debutant left-arm spinner, Lasith Ambuldeniya, who took an outstanding 5/66 in 26 overs. Remarkably, the latter was only introduced into the attack more than halfway through the morning session by which time Du Plessis and De Kock had scored 59 runs in the first hour’s play. He dismissed De Kock with his 12th delivery of the day and thereafter Sri Lanka were always well in the game. Their target might have been considerably lower had he been introduced at an earlier stage. The most pleasing feature to come out of a disappointing Proteas batting performance throughout the match has been the new-found consistency of De Kock who has a century and three half-centuries to his credit from his 5 Test match innings this summer and has pushed his career average close to the benchmark of 40. He and Du Plessis have excelled in making runs when they are really needed as witnessed by their respective centuries against Pakistan at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium and at PPC Newlands. The bowlers nevertheless have a reasonable total to defend, particularly as the three Sri Lankan wickets to fall include the key one of their captain, Dimuth Karunaratne, who was dismissed leg before wicket by Philander for the second time in the match. In addition, Keshav Maharaj can be expected to play a much more dominant role when play gets underway on the fourth day.

Vishwa Fernando took a career-best four for 62 as Sri Lanka made an encouraging start to the first Test against South Africa in Durban. Fernando removed openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar and the hosts were reeling on 17 for three before Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma steadied the ship. Du Plessis hit 35 and Bavuma 47 as the duo put on a crucial 72 for the fourth wicket, before Quinton de Kock top-scored with 80. However, wickets fell steadily around de Kock and South Africa were eventually dismissed for 235. Dale Steyn struck early to remove Lahiru Thirimanne but Sri Lanka were nicely placed at 49 for one at the close of play.
Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/pqS0mLJoe Burns and Travis Head score centuries as Australia dominate Sri Lanka. Joe Burns and Travis Head smashed big hundreds to end Australia's century drought and put the hosts on course for a massive first innings total despite a wobbly start against Sri Lanka's makeshift attack in the second and final Test on Friday. Sri Lanka's injury-depleted pace attack flattered to deceive on the opening day of the first ever test at the Manuka Oval as Burns and Head forged a mammoth fourth-wicket stand of 308 to power the hosts to 384 for four at close after being reduced to 28 for three. Burns, who had scored his last Test hundred against New Zealand in early 2016, was unbeaten on a career-best 172 after bringing up the first century by an Australian batsman since Usman Khawaja's 141 in the drawn Dubai test against Pakistan last October. Head completed his maiden Test ton before he was out on 161, following up on his 84 in the victory in Brisbane last week. Kurtis Patterson was batting on 25, after being dropped at short leg on the first ball he faced from Dhananjaya de Silva. On a chilly and overcast morning at the Manuka Oval, Australia captain Tim Paine finally had some luck with the coin toss, winning for only the second time in nine tests he had led the team in. But his joy was shortlived as Sri Lanka made early inroads despite being forced to go with a completely new pace attack with the injured Suranga Lakmal joining Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara on the sidelines after playing the Gabba Test. Left-armer Vishwa Fernando, who was not in the original squad and joined only as a replacement for Nuwan Pradeep, struck twice in two overs to dismiss left-handers Marcus Harris and Khawaja with his outswinging deliveries. Debutant Chamika Karunaratne, who arrived in Australia only couple of days back as a replacement, then picked up a wicket with only his fourth delivery in Test cricket, getting Marnus Labuschagne (six) to edge behind. The hosts, who lead the series 1-0 after their win in Brisbane by an innings and 40 runs, looked in deep trouble when Burns and Head combined to prop up the innings. As the new ball lost its shine and the Sri Lankan pacemen their swing, the batting pair grew in confidence and upped their scoring rate, finding the boundaries almost at will against Sri Lanka's listless bowling on a docile pitch. Burns, who returned to the side in the ongoing series after being dropped against Pakistan and India, played some flowing off-drives and also cut and pulled ferociously against Sri Lanka's pace attack with a combined experience of five Tests coming into the match. The 29-year-old has hit 26 fours in his unfinished 243-ball knock. Head looked assured during his stay at the crease and hit 21 fours and a six in his 204-ball knock before becoming Fernando's third victim. Sri Lanka's fielders did not help their cause by dropping four catches reprieving both Burns and Head before they completed their hundreds.
Australia close in on second Test victory over Sri Lanka . Usman Khawaja found his scoring touch and fast bowler Mitchell Starc returned to his fiery best as Australia moved within sight of victory in the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Manuka Oval on Sunday. After Australia, on course for a first series win since beating England early last year, set the tourists an improbable 516 for victory openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne survived some nervy moments to take Sri Lanka to 17 before bad light ended the third day's play early. Starc picked up his 10th five-wicket haul - his first since his 5-34 against South Africa in Durban last March - as Australia bundled out Sri Lanka for 215 to take a first-innings lead of 319. Australia, who won the opening Test in Brisbane by an innings and 40 runs, did not get off to a great start in their second innings as they lost Marcus Harris, Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne cheaply. But Khawaja and first-innings centurion Travis Head combined for a stand of 159 as Australia declared their second innings closed on 196-3. Captain Tim Paine called the batsmen in after Khawaja completed his eighth Test hundred. The left-hander enjoyed the moment, having scored only one fifty in the home summer. He remained unbeaten on 101 while Head made 59 not out. Earlier, Starc, who got the wicket of Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal on day two, bowled with pace and aggression to pick up the first two to fall on Sunday, then returned after lunch to polish off the tail and finish with figures of 5-54. Kusal Perera did not return to bat for the touring side after being hit on his helmet and leaving the field. After opening batsman Karunaratne was forced to retire hurt on the second day after being hit by a Pat Cummins bouncer on the back of his neck, it was Perera's turn to leave the field on the third morning. He retired hurt on 29 after a blow to his helmet by fast bowler Jhye Richardson while trying to duck under a short delivery. He took the impact flush on the side of his helmet with the neck protector flying off. The left-hander continued batting after twice being attended to by the team doctor but finally walked off an over later. Karunaratne returned to the crease after Perera's departure and completed a gritty half-century before edging Starc to Kurtis Patterson at gully to be out for 59. Starc took 15 wickets in five Tests during the India series and the opener against Sri Lanka but faced heavy criticism for some wayward bowling that prompted calls for Paine to take the new ball off his hands. The tall left-arm quick was back at his fiery best on Sunday, however, and tested the batsmen with short-pitched deliveries, one of which accounted for Dhananjaya de Silva. The batsman lost his balance while going for a pull shot and ended up dislodging a bail with his bat to be out for 25. Starc dismissed Dilruwan Perera and Vishwa Fernando in his first over after lunch to complete his five-wicket haul.
