That would be the catchline going around the Kolkata Knight Riders’ camp a day before they take on Rajasthan Royals in their last league match of this IPL on Thursday. Although KKR are still best placed to seal the sole remaining playoffs berth, they cannot yet take anything for granted. Mumbai Indians are breathing down their necks by roaring back into contention after thrashing RR by eight wickets on Tuesday. Although RR and Punjab Kings also stand a mathematical chance of making the last four, it’s primarily a two-way battle between KKR and MI. To avoid all sorts of complicated calculations, KKR will have to beat RR at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday. But MI will have the advantage of stepping on the ground for their last league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad a day later, knowing exactly what is required to qualify. So KKR will also have to make things as difficult as possible for the Mumbai outfit by improving their net run rate (NRR) as there’s a good chance of both the sides ending up on 14 points and in which case the NRR will come into play. KKR should take a leaf out of how the MI batters applied themselves against RR on the wicket while reaching the victory target with 70 balls remaining. The Eoin Morgan-led side would love to see Andre Russell back. The good news is that the big West Indian, who had missed the last three games with a hamstring injury, has resumed training. Russell is not only capable of finishing things with a flurry, but can also bowl some useful overs at the death. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, there are 335 sportspersons from Russia competing with athletes from around the world. Yet, unlike their counterparts, the Russians are not allowed to use their country’s name, flag, and anthem, and are competing under the acronym ROC, meaning Russian Olympic Committee. In the 2020 medals tally, all of their medals are listed next to the name ROC, with a flag that is different from Russia’s official. What led to Russia being ‘banned’ from Tokyo Olympics 2020? In December 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned Russia for four years from competing in international events, including the Tokyo Olympics and the FIFA World Cup in 2022. The ban was enacted after new revelations came up about a doping program that Russia had been accused of. For many years, whistleblowers and investigators had accused Russia of running a doping program so sophisticated that it forced international federations to stop its athletes from competing in major events. In September 2018, after multiple investigations, WADA lifted the sanctions on the condition that Russia hands over athlete data from its Moscow laboratory to doping regulators, which would help identify hundreds of athletes who may have cheated across various sports. What was Russia originally accused of? Russia was then accused of manipulating that database, leading to the WADA panel suggesting the four-year ban. In 2014, 800m runner Yulia Stepanova and her husband Vitaly, a former employee of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency, RUSADA, appeared in a German documentary and lifted the lid on what was later described as one of the most “sophisticated doping programs” in sports history. Two years later, another whistleblower — Grigory Rodchenkov, a former head of the RUSADA — told The New York Times that Russia ran a carefully planned, state-sponsored doping scheme. Rodchenkov’s claims were more damning. He alleged a wider conspiracy, in which the country’s anti-doping and members of intelligence services substituted urine samples of the athletes through a hidden hole in the wall at the agency’s laboratory during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The lab, according to investigations, was guarded by members of Russia’s state security services. Subsequently, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), WADA, and other global federations launched a series of investigations. But what does the ‘ban’ effectively mean? The ban is not outright, and 335 athletes from Russia are still playing at Tokyo, only under the name ROC, meaning Russian Olympic Committee – the team that sends Russian athletes to all Games. In effect, the ‘punishment’ only consists of forcing them to not use Russia’s name, flag, or national anthem. WADA President Witold Bańka said about the case to USA Today, “We at WADA remain disappointed that CAS has decreased the level of the sanctions from four years to two years and that CAS allows them to compete for Russian athletes with the colors of the flag in the uniforms.” The ROC players are only those who have been able to prove that they were not part of the doping scam. As per the IOC, “All public displays of the organization’s participant name should use the acronym ‘ROC’, not the full name “Russian Olympic Committee”. After electing to field first, KKR restricted Rohit Sharma and Co to 152 courtesy of a five-wicket haul from Andre Russell. In their run-chase, the Knights were cruising after Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill’s 72-run stand. However, it was Rahul Chahar’s four-for that helped MI make a comeback. The other bowlers, especially Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Krunal Pandya, didn’t give the KKR batters much to work with either. In the end, the Knights got to only 142 runs. In the meantime, Shah Rukh Khan, the co-owner of the Knight Riders, wasn’t pleased with KKR’s performance. The Bollywood actor dropped a tweet, expressing his anguish after the Men in Gold and Purple snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. I support that tweet: Andre Russell Russell, whose efforts with the ball went in vain, opined on the tweet. Despite the loss, the Jamaican sounded confident of his team’s performance and vowed to make a comeback going forward. “Yeah, I support that Tweet but at the end of the day the game of cricket… you are not sure until it’s over. I think we are still confident, we still played some good cricket and I am proud of the boys. You know, we are definitely disappointed but it’s not the end of the world, it’s only the second game and we are going to learn from it,” Russell said in the post-match press conference. “I just think it’s a game of cricket. I have played hundreds of T20 games and I have seen games where teams cruise in on the driver’s seat and then suddenly lose a few wickets, and that’s what happened tonight. So, we definitely have to learn from this. We will look to make sure that who’s in, stays in and once we learn from all these mistakes we will definitely do better. I have trust and confidence in the boys,” he added. At the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, on Tuesday, October 27, he might have influenced SRH skipper David Warner to not go for the Decision Review System (DRS) during the fag end of the match, which the Sunrisers won by 88 runs. During the 17th over of DC’s run-chase, a full-length delivery from Sandeep Sharma smashed Ravi Ashwin, who tried to flick the ball on the leg side, on the pads. The Sunrisers’ players appealed in unison, but the shout was turned down by Chaudhary. Thereafter, Chaudhary tapped on his knuckles, suggesting that Ashwin had gotten an inside-edge. The fielders didn’t go for the DRS. The decision was inconsequential though as the game was all over bar the shouting. However, the commentators, Scott Styris, Sanjay Bangar and Brett Lee reckoned that Chaudhary was absent-minded and made the error in judgement. “Should the umpire be doing that? Standing there saying ‘bat’? With the ability now of teams to have reviews, should he be giving a cue to the players? When we played before DRS was around, we would often see umpires do that, and there was no problem because he was then helping the fielding team out as to say why it was given not out – ‘I believe he hit it’. But now, with the DRS,” Styris said. What does the rule-book say on Anil Chaudhary’s actions? If the pages of the rule-book are turned, players aren’t allowed to consult the umpires before taking a DRS review. There’s no mention of an umpire sending information or suggestions to the players either. Article 3.2.3 of IPL’s playing conditions says, “Under no circumstances is any player permitted to query an umpire about any aspect of a decision before deciding on whether or not to request a Player Review.” “If the on-field umpires believe that the captain or either batsman has received direct or indirect input emanating other than from the players on the field, then they may at their discretion, decline the request for a Player Review. In particular, signals from the dressing room must not be given. Breach of this provision will be liable for reporting under COC.” As far as the match goes, DC were bowled out for 131 in 19 overs after Rashid Khan’s stupendous spell of 4-0-7-3. For SRH, Wriddhiman Saha and David Warner sparkled with knocks of 87 and 66 respectively. Kamran Akmal and Cameron Delport scored half-centuries to lift their team to a match-winning total and helped them in lifting the trophy for the very first time. Philander gave only 8 runs away in the 3 overs that he bowled that day while Bernard picked up 2 crucial wickets. Legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan also played an important role in not letting the Warriors batting lineup score freely. Tallawahs won their second title in 2016 and once again, it was Warriors who were at the losing end. This particular game turned out to be a one-sided affair Warriors were bowled out on just 93. Imad Wasim picked up three wickets for his side while Shakib Al Hasan and Andre Russell picked up 2-2 wickets each. Chasing 94, Chris Gayle wanted the match to be over really soon as he started to smash sixes from the word go. He played a superb knock of 54 off just 27 deliveries, including 6 towering sixes. Tallawahs will be hoping to win the upcoming edition and become three-time champions. The third and final team which has lifted the coveted trophy two times is Barbados Tridents. Their first title win came in the year 2014 and they won the league once again in 2019. Tridents have been a part of three finals and won two of them. A Rohit Sharma century in the first match. A Shikhar Dhawan century in the second. Contributions from Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, MS Dhoni and KL Rahul over the two games. India's batting, just like their bowling, is up and running already in the World Cup. It's no wonder that they're two in two, having defeated two tough sides in South Africa and Australia. New Zealand, runners-up at the 2015 World Cup, have beaten Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the round-robin phase to put themselves in pole position for a semi-final spot.
