Virginia Tech vs. Duke: For the first time since 2012, the Virginia Tech Hokies are heading to the ACC Softball Championship game. The third-seeded Hokies defeated the second-seeded Blue Devils, 5-0. The only other time that Duke has ever been shut out in an ACC Tournament game was also against Virginia Tech in 2018. All of Virginia Tech's runs came via the home run. Michelle Chatfield, Nora Abromavage, and Rachel Castine each hit a solo home run, and Kylie Aldridge hit a 2-run home run in the seventh inning. ACC Freshman of the Year Bree Carrico pitched 5.2 innings of scoreless softball, giving up just three hits while striking out four. Emma Mazzarone came in to the game in relief and got the final four outs of the game. Virginia Tech will take on top-seeded Florida State in the championship game. North Carolina vs. Duke Game Highlights | 2026 ACC Softball
The second-seeded Blue Devils will advance to the semifinals of the ACC Softball Championship after defeating tenth-seeded North Carolina, 16-8. Jessica Oakland had the hot bat with four hits including 2 doubles and 4 RBI for the Blue Devils. Duke scored 6 runs in the 4th and 6th innings to overwhelm the rival Tar Heels. KK Mathis and Gabriella Shadek each notched three hits with Mathis registering 3 RBI. Mathis also had command on the mound as she got the victory to move to 2-0 in the tournament after surrendering only 2 hits and 0 earned runs for the Blue Devils in 1.2 innings pitched. Michele Tarpey and Lexie Roberts combined for 6 hits and the ACC Home Run leader Emily Legette had a 2-run home run blast in the top of the fourth for the Tar Heels. Duke will take on the winner of third-seeded Virginia Tech and sixth-seeded Virginia. As part of paying tribute to John Sterling on his passing, I wanted to upload something from the earlier part of his career that hasn't been represented on my channel until now, and that was his tenure as the voice of the New York/New Jersey Nets from 1975 to 1980. I unfortunately still have not come across his call of the Nets second ABA title in 1976, and the only two Nets broadcasts I have are from their first season in the NBA (and their last on Long Island) when they plummeted to a last place team, largely because they had been forced to sell Julius Erving to pay off the penalties stemming from the merger. This game sees them playing the Sixers at the Spectrum where Dr. J is about to take his new team to the NBA Finals that year. John calls the game on WMCA Radio with Mike DiTomasso.
