Greatest Rivalry: The Game That Changed Springbok Rugby Forever
Wellington 2018 is the moment modern Springbok rugby changed forever. The Boks arrived ranked 7th, coming off losses to Argentina and Australia, facing the number‑one All Blacks on home soil. Twelve months earlier they lost 57–0 in Albany, and according to Rassie in Chasing the Sun, a third straight loss would’ve ended his tenure just six months in. The match started badly. Down 12–0 in 15 minutes, another humiliation felt inevitable. But the Boks dug deep. Fighting for belief, they scored three unanswered tries and led 24–17 at halftime. By the 56th minute it was 36–22 — and they wouldn’t score again. The final stand came down to five big moments: a turnover from a knock‑on, Willie le Roux returning from the bin, a maul error that forced Savea to carry, a turnover on the tryline, and Kolbe stopping Crotty before the gain line. Then, in overtime, Dyantyi shot in and dislodged the ball from McKenzie’s hands. The Boks claimed it, recycled it, and the game was over. As Rassie said: this is the day they started believing.
