With persistent rainfall at Colombo it has become very hard for the organizers to fit in matches amidst a packed schedule. India originally had a day off between their fixtures against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. But the reserve day mode activation out of nowhere for the particular match against their arch-rivals Pakistan India now have to play intense cricket on three consecutive days. However the reserve day was offered for this one game was in agreement with all the boards taking part in the Super Fours stage of the Asia Cup 2023. So just 16 hours after sinking Pakistan Men in Blue go head-to-head against the co-hosts Sri Lanka who are a 13-match winning streak at R.Premadasa Stadium (RPS) in Colombo. Everyone expected Indian batters especially top-order would bounce against Pakistani pacers what transpired in group stage. Probably not. Rohit and Shubman teared off the new ball effect with superb half-centuries providing a flying start after being asked to bat first. A proper downpour had it's control over the proceedings for a long time and it was not a straight resumption on the reserve day either. King Kohli orchestrated an excellent ton his fourth in straight innings' at RPS and kept punching at Babar Azam and co. with an unbeaten partnership of 233 runs alongside KL Rahul to post a mammoth 356 runs on the board. Jasprit Bumrah bowled for the first time in this Asia Cup and moved the ball both ways and made the Pakistani openers to dance to his music getting a brilliant support from Siraj. Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur as well got the movements and bowled fantastic nuts to dismiss Babar Azam and Rizwan respectively before Kuldeep Yadav's (8-0-25-5) spin magic came into the fore and floored down Pakistan completely. India's win by 228 runs was their 4th biggest in ODIs and overall 4th biggest in the Asia Cup. Recovery is the key for the players with continuous games coming up including the mega event the World Cup. The team management might persist with the winning XI a game at least but there is a possibility of rotating some of the players especially the fast bowlers. Sri Lanka have been able to catch the crucial moments and managed to win 13 ODI matches on the bounce. They are just behind Australia's 21 consecutive victories which is the longest-ever winning streak in this format. It is not that Sri Lanka have the full strength at the moment. Four main stream bowlers- Wanindu Hasaranga Dushmantha Chameera Kumara and Dilshan Madushanka are out due to respective injuries. But on a good note that all of these bowlers are seen practicing in the nets which is a really good news for the Lankan Board. The Lankan Lions got through the Group B as the toppers but not before facing a scare against Afghanistan. But the confidence arises from their two good wins against Bangladesh in what is termed as a 'Naagin Derby'. A few starts in the top order with Mendis getting to another ODI fifty Sri Lanka looked to had control of their first Super Four game against Bangladesh before the pace trio of Taskin Shoriful Mahmud pegged the co-hosts back with regular wickets. Series conceded 2-0 Sri Lanka will have pride to play for in the third and final ODI against India in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday (January 15). While there are no Super League points at stake in this inconsequential clash Sri Lanka do have a one final shot at automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup later in India when they take on New Zealand at home and a win before that would do their confidence a world of good. Despite failing to gain control over the seam movements they have managed to bag wickets at crucial junctures. For India they would be hoping that the best friend duo of KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya steer them to victory. They should chase it down with ease but in cricket anything can happen. Let's see if they present any fight. Mohammed Siraj (5.4-0-30-3) says that the wicket did not have much pace at the start and he was trying to bowl stump-to-stump as there was no swing. Mentions that he was just trying to keep the pressure on. Tells that he was talking to KL Rahul and he said that there was not much swing after the first over and that's why Siraj attempted to bowl with a scrambled seam. Feels that it is a batting wicket and Kuldeep bowled an extraordinary spell. States that the Indian batters just need to keep it simple to chase this total down. The only change that India made for this game was replacing the unfit Yuzvendra Chahal with Kuldeep Yadav and he grabbed the chance with open arms. He bowled with a lot of control and skills and his execution of plans was brilliant. The other bowlers also rallied around him and the likes of Umran Malik and Mohammed Siraj were again among the wickets. The start from Sri Lanka was decent as they batted out Powerplay 1 by losing only one wicket and managed to put 51 runs on the board. Debutant Nuwanidu Fernando and Kusal Mendis formed a partnership and the former impressed everyone with his calm and composed knock. At the first Drinks break the visitors looked in control and would have been dreaming of a score in excess of 300 but Kuldeep Yadav came out of syllabus for them. The magical wrist spinner created havoc and ran through the middle order in a jiffy. From 102 for 1 Sri Lanka collapsed to 126 for 6. The lower order contributed a few handy runs taking the score above 200 but failed to last the distance. A dominant bowling show from India on a batting-friendly surface. They will be immensely pleased with their efforts on the field - bundling out the opposition for a paltry score inside 40 overs. Heading into this India lead the three-match series 1-0. It was Virat Kohli's show at Barsapara Cricket Stadium which pipped the visitors despite Dasun Shanaka's inspirational fight back. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill laid the platform with classy half-centuries and Virat Kohli continued the onslaught with his 45th ODI hundred as India posted 373/7 in their allotted 50 overs. The only part of talking was that the middle order consisting of Shreyas Iyer KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya didn't make the runs galore. Instead they scored quick cameos which was then the need of the hour. The Men in Blue would love the top order to continue their good run of form in the second ODI alongside the middle and lower order as they will look to seal the series with a game in hand. During the toss the topic of bowling under dew was raised and Rohit said that they were upto it. And so the bowlers showed their class with Mohammed Siraj starting the Lankan collapse with the new ball. Umran Malik followed suit to dismantle the opposition with his raw pace. However they couldn't get past the Lankan skipper but the massive total was more than enough to restrict them to 306/8 in their allotted 50 overs winning the first match by 67 runs. On the other hand Sri Lanka have more things to ponder about. Their bowlers let them down after opting to bowl first on a solid batting track. More so the fielders didn't show support to their hard-working bowlers and you cannot give two chances to a player of the caliber of Virat Kohli which they did and the former Indian skipper made them pay with a brutal knock. The Island Nation were behind the eight-ball right from the get-go chasing 374 to win. While Pathum Nissanka held one end up with a fighting half-century wickets fell regularly at the other end. Once Nissanka got out it was thought that the visitors would fold out quickly but Dasun Shanaka had other ideas as he continued his rich vein of form from the T20Is amassing his career-best score. As of now Team India shouldn't make any changes to their winning combination. But Sri Lanka might make a change or two depending on the fitness of Dilshan Madushanka who landed awkwardly on his right shoulder in the previous match and walked off the field bowling only six overs. It will be another batting paradise awaiting us in Kolkata and we expect another high-scoring thriller. It was here in 2014 that Rohit Sharma scored his career-best 264 and that too against the same opposition. So the memories will be there for both sides and it will be interesting to see who comes on top. India Team News: There was much debate about putting Ishan Kishan on the bench based on his recent form but Shubman Gill added to the dilemma as he scored a 60-ball 70 in the series opener. With the ball Umran Malik repaid the faith put in him with wickets in the middle-overs. India should retain the same XI that earned them the series lead. Sri Lanka Team News: Dilshan Madushanka dismissed Rohit but had a middling debut otherwise finishing with figures of 1 for 43. Lahiru Kumara in his place could be an experienced option. Left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage was ineffective too and could make way for Maheesh Theekshana. What to expect: More runs and more dew at a venue that's been kinder to batters.
