How PSG's defeat of Man Utd gave Man City boss Pep Guardiola food for thought
How PSG's defeat of Man Utd gave Man City boss Pep Guardiola food for thought

How PSG's defeat of Man Utd gave Man City boss Pep Guardiola food for thought. For Manchester United it was a jolted awakening from the trance that nine convincing victories in 10 games lend themselves to producing. Paris Saint-Germain, in their efficient, organised ruthlessness, shone a refined light on the frailties of a side who, despite their marked upturn in form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, remain blighted by an equal blend of imperfection and inexperience. It was one of the more impressive away performances that Old Trafford has seen in recent memory - PSG earned the enviable honour of becoming the first side to win by more than one goal in European competition at the famous old ground - and Thomas Tuchel's side provided a reminder to Europe, and the Premier League, that United still have considerable work to do to retake their place among the elite. The Premier League table, in its current guise, seems destined to be at least influenced, if not decided, by how Manchester City and Liverpool fare in their respective away trips to United. Jurgen Klopp's side are first up, on February 24, before Pep Guardiola and his record-breakers make the short trip across town on March 16. Those games, based on the season's evidence to date, will see United go through tests as stern as the one presented by Kylian Mbappé and Co. in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat. Perhaps the most impressive facet of PSG's performance was their limiting of Paul Pogba's influence in the centre of midfield. Arsene Wenger's analysis was the most succinct. "In the Champions League you cannot be dominated in midfield," the former Arsenal manager said in his punditry for beIN Sports. "The whole evening, Man United were dominated in midfield. Paris Saint-Germain played with five midfielders and they never lost the ball. Manchester United could never win the ball back. And when they had the ball they lost it very quickly because Paris Saint-Germain dominated the midfield to win the ball back. They lost the battle there in midfield." City's 2-1 victory at Old Trafford last season was the product of two scrappy goals that belied the Blues' dominant showing but Pep Guardiola might have the quiet hope of a more convincing scoreline after seeing from the bereft nature of United's attacking play against PSG once Pogba, the World Cup winner, was rendered ineffectual. Marquinos, the Brazilian centre-back-cum-defensive-midfielder, tempered Pogba's involvement to just 41 passes, a third short of his usual output, with the pace of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial rendered insignificant as a result. It was a performance that might have sent Guardiola's mind wandering about the possibility of acquiring Marquinos as the solution to the season-old problem of Fernandinho's successor. It is unlikely of course - not least because of the political tensions between Abu Dhabi, City's owners, and Qatar, owners of PSG - yet the 24-year-old's display will surely have gone some way to writing Guardiola's game plan for the trip to Old Trafford for him. Julian Draxler, the Germany winger, operated in behind Pogba and drifted across the pitch from right to left to feed Ángel Di Maria down PSG's left flank. Ashley Young looked every inch of a 33-year-old veteran playing out of position as the Argentinian exploited the space vacated by Young's questionable position and it is a wonder what Leroy Sané could produce with a similar opportunity. St Johnstone 0 2 Celtic Scottish Premiership champions restore six point lead over Rangers
St Johnstone 0 2 Celtic Scottish Premiership champions restore six point lead over Rangers

St Johnstone 0-2 Celtic: Scottish Premiership champions restore six-point lead over Rangers. Two late strikes saw Celtic restore their six-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership with a hard-earned 2-0 win at St Johnstone on Sunday. James Forrest, who later had to hobble off with a hamstring injury, finally made the breakthrough with just 12 minutes to go, before substitute Timothy Weah sealed the win in the final minute. And despite Kristoffer Ajer's injury-time red card, the champions held on to stay six points ahead of second-placed Rangers, while the Saints remain sixth in the table. The home team had struggled to create many meaningful openings in their 2-0 defeat at Celtic in midweek, but they were almost ahead within just five minutes. However, faced with just Scott Bain to beat, Matty Kennedy shot too close to the Celtic 'keeper and thereafter the visitors took control. The closest Celtic came to making the breakthrough was just before the quarter-hour mark when Jason Kerr appeared to catch Oliver Burke in the box, only for referee William Collum to wrongly decide the St Johnstone defender had got the ball. Brendan Rodgers's side moved up a gear in the second period, only to find Zander Clark in inspired form between the posts, with the Saints No 1 making a succession of impressive stops to keep the scoreline goalless. But just as St Johnstone's fans were starting to believe their team could earn yet another clean sheet, Scott Tanser lost concentration at the far post, allowing Forrest to nip in and touch home Weah's cross from the left. St Johnstone made four changes from the side that lost 2-0 at Celtic in midweek, with Ross Callachan, Matty Kennedy, Sean Goss and Tony Watt all coming into the starting XI.Meanwhile, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers stuck with the same line-up that beat the Saints at home on Wednesday. It was Weah who wrapped up proceedings late on after St Johnstone lost the ball from their own corner, allowing Callum McGregor to break upfield and set up the on-loan PSG forward for a simple tap in. The champions' day may have been spoiled when Ajer was given a straight red after losing possession to Callum Hendry - son of former Scotland defender Colin - and pulling the substitute back as he broke clear on goal. But their victory did mean Rodgers has now won 75 of his first 100 league games in charge of Celtic, matching the record of the legendary Jock Stein. Celtic take on Hibernian at Celtic Park, while St Johnstone travel to Hamilton, with both Scottish Premiership games taking place on Wednesday night. EFL should give Derby 2 0 win over Leeds after 'spy', says Stuart Pearce
EFL should give Derby 2 0 win over Leeds after 'spy', says Stuart Pearce

EFL should give Derby 2-0 win over Leeds after 'spy', says Stuart Pearce. The EFL should reverse the scoreline and award Derby a victory over Leeds after a 'spy' was discovered at the Rams' training ground last week, says Stuart Pearce on The Debate. Police were called to Derby's training ground amid claims a member of Leeds' coaching staff was surreptitiously watching their session the day before the clubs met in the Sky Bet Championship - a game which Leeds won 2-0. Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa admitted to sending an individual to spy on the training session, prompting the EFL to launch the formal investigation. Former Manchester City and Nottingham Forest manager Pearce insisted the punishment should fit the crime, and suggests reversing the scoreline would be fair. "It's not right and proper, from whatever country you come from. It will be interesting to see what the punishment will be from the FA. We've not seen anything as clear-cut as this before. "If it was me, the team that it has affected the most is Derby, and I would reverse the scoreline. Let the punishment fit the crime. It fits this brilliantly. "Do you think the EFL call him in, and say: 'Don't do that again'. Or I think the way I've approached it, the punishment directly fits the crime in this case." If it is found that Leeds have breached the rules, a full range of potential sanctions are available to the EFL, including a warning, a points deduction or financial penalties. Also speaking on The Debate, Liam Rosenior believes a high level of punishment would be a deterrent for other clubs who want to send spies to training grounds. "If Stuart's punishment was what the EFL went with, I'd guarantee you nobody else would be caught sending scouts to training grounds. "I think it's wrong and something should happen, whether it's reversing the result or replaying the game, there has to be some form of punishment, because it's morally wrong. "If Bielsa didn't think he was going to gain an advantage, he wouldn't have sent him." Predict 6 correct scores for your chance to win £250K.
