Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) heeft de concurrentie meteen een oplawaai verkocht in de openingstijdrit van de Ronde van Italië. Filippo Ganna verloor voor het eerst een tijdrit in de Giro, maar hij kon Evenepoel wel het dichtste benaderen. Uitdager Primoz Roglic werd 6e, op 43 seconden. Zie je na vandaag toch nog andere concurrenten opduiken?". José: "Nee, ik zie eerder extra concurrenten voor Roglic. Remco is volgens mij de betere, de rest schuift gewoon op richting Roglic. Het is nu niet meer Evenepoel vs Roglic, maar wel Evenepoel vs de rest." "Roglic zal nu moeten buurten bij jongens als Almeida, Vine, Thomas, Hart, ... Na één tijdrit is het een beetje één tegen allen geworden." Karl: "De verschillen zijn groter dan verwacht, en dat terwijl dit nog maar 2/7 van alle tijdritkilometers was." José: "Dat weet de concurrentie ook en daarom zullen ze samenklitten. Ze weten dat ze anders een probleem hebben in de tijdritten. Anderzijds denk ik dat die jongens ook al naar elkaar zullen kijken. Het is nog vroeg, maar de standaard is gezet." Karl: "Er zijn wel nog enkele blokken, zoals Ineos met Hart en Thomas in de top 10 en UAE zelfs met 3 renners in de top 10. Is dat een gevaar?" José: "Voor de Giro had ik al gezegd dat Ineos het in de breedte moest doen. Kijken of zich geen opportuniteit voordoet om mee te gaan in een ontsnapping. Al kunnen jongens als Thomas en Hart ook niet stiekem meegaan. Bij UAE hetzelfde. Zij hebben nu 3 renners vooraan. Die zullen toch iets proberen? Voor Remco is het peloton eigenlijk maar 10 man sterk. De rest is voor zijn ploeg." Karl: "Jullie hadden op voorhand gezegd dat Remco beter het roze nog niet zou pakken. Hoe moeten ze het nu aanpakken?" José: "Je controleert enkel die mannen waarover we al hebben gesproken. De anderen laat je hun eigen koers maken. Je hebt altijd andere ploegen die willen helpen. De sprintersploegen als het een vlakke rit is bijvoorbeeld. Ik denk dat de ploeg de eerste dagen niet al te veel zal moeten doen."
