Thumbs up, comment, share. - 2004 NBA Playoffs Eastern Conference Finals Indiana Pacers vs Detroit Pistons Full Series Defensive Highlights Baskets included in this video are ones in which the defensive play led directly to the transition/fast-break score. - The 2004 Eastern Conference Finals featured 2 mid-2000’s heavyweights whose styles of play exemplified the opposite of what today’s NBA advertises. It’s not a coincidence that the series included the current (at time) and previous season’s Defensive Player of the Year Award winners. The 03-04 campaign saw both Rick Carlisle’s league best 61-win Indiana Pacers and Larry Brown’s 54-win Detroit Pistons finish top 3 in defensive rating (points allowed per 100 possessions). Both squads also placed amidst the bottom 10 in pace (estimate number of possessions per 48 minutes). These metrics went hand in hand. Energy expended by prioritizing defense meant conservative slower paced efforts offensively. For the Pacers and Pistons, wasted offensive possessions were not the resultant of an aggressive, physical, no easy baskets, rebound treasuring approach. Detroit ranked 12th in turnovers per game, close to league average. Indiana placed 21st, quite impressive. The Pistons’ valuing of possessions is best reflected in their three-point attempts. Brown’s team finished the regular season 26th in that department, a tad under 12 per game. They had capable shooters, but were deliberate in not falling into that trap. Manufacturing quality opportunities inside the arc was more their nature. Utilized heavily was Rip’s midrange lethality, Chauncey’s ability to create downhill or size up smaller point guards, and the Wallace Bros’ bucket finishing aptitude down low. Designed to limit opponents offensively, both clubs were successful during the regular season. When challenged with the task of facing each other, one of the grimiest, most unattractive and deemed by many “hard to watch” playoff matchups in league history ensued. The highest point total in this series was 85. At least 1 of the team’s scored under 70 in 4 of the 6 games. And besides Rip’s 33 point outburst in game 5, not 1 player scored over 24. Statistically speaking, its peak level of defensive excellence came in game 2 when a combined 26 shot attempts were blocked, the most ever by two teams in a playoff game. Doc said it best mid-way through, “The guys are getting to the bucket, they’re making great plays, but the defense right now is better than the offense.” The series concluding game 6 totaled 134 points (69-65), the 2nd lowest combined playoff score since 1954. For the series, Detroit managed only 75.2 PPG while shooting an abysmal 37.3% from the field. Using basketballreference.com, I determined that both averages are the lowest among all winning teams of a 21st century playoff series (300 total series have been played since the 2000-01 season). Boston’s 83.0 PPG in their 2002 Semi-Final win against Detroit and Toronto’s 39.3% FG in their 2016 first round victory over Indiana rank 2nd in those respective statistical categories. The following list displays the 10 lowest FG% shot by the winning team of any 21st century playoff series: 1 - 37.3% (75.2p) - Pistons, 2004 ECF (6g) 2 - 39.3% (92.3p) - Raptors, 2016 R1 (7g) 3 - 39.5% (88.3p) - Pacers, 2005 R1 (7g) 4 - 39.6% (86.7p) - Pistons, 2004 R2 (7g) 5 - 39.9% (89.0p) - Kings, 2002 R1 (4g) 6 - 40.1% (90.1p) - 76ers, 2001 ECF (7g) 7 - 40.2% (98.0p) - Kings, 2001 R1 (4g) 8 - 40.3% (90.5p) - Spurs, 2003 R1 (6g) 9 - 40.5% (93.6p) - Grizzlies, 2013 R2 (5g) 10 - 40.7% (86.0p) - 76ers, 2012 R1 (6g) The 03-04 Pistons set and challenged all-time records during the regular season as well. They tied for the 3rd lowest opponent average since 1954, allowing just 84.26 PPG. Complimenting this was their stretch of 36 consecutive games in which they held opponents under 100 points, a record that is currently still unmatched. - All footage is property of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Formula 1 recently voted in favor of the engine freeze that Red Bull have been requesting for some time now. This led to confirmation that Red Bull and Honda have come to an official agreement that would enable Red Bull to take over Honda’s F1 program at the end of the 2021 season. This along with the budget cap have been two of the few significant changes many F1 teams have been wanting. That leaves a cap on driver salary pending and Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has now given his opinion Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgzGbq5AbWDxHPJ81MJ4AaABCQ 0:00 - Hamilton Too Expensive For F1 1:30 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Hamilton Too Expensive For F1 Marko began by addressing the deal with Honda “We have been discussing this topic with Honda for some time and following the FIA’s decision to freeze power unit development from 2022, we could at last reach an agreement regarding the continued use of Honda’s hybrid power units” He then thanked Honda “We are grateful for Honda’s collaboration in this regard and for helping to ensure that both Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri continue to have competitive power units” He further explained the need for such a bold move “The establishment of Red Bull Powertrains Limited is a bold move by Red Bull but it is one we have made after careful and detailed consideration. We are aware of the huge commitment required but we believe the creation of this new company is the most competitive option for both teams” He then addressed Lewis Hamilton’s purported salary after his contract renewal with Mercedes while speaking to RTL “Hamilton is simply too expensive for Formula 1. That's why the driver's salaries should also be included in the "cost cap"” Fast Feed Formula 2 driver Christian Lundgaard feels that “this is going to be a crucial season for” him as “it will be” his “second year in Formula 2 and for a third chance you need a rich father” Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has confirmed that they “have issues with Ferrari employees coming to Banbury to start up the engines because they would need to quarantine” This is because they “cannot afford that timewise, so” they “decided to do the fire up in Bahrain” He also added that they “want to attack and finish in the top five of the constructors' championship. That is why” they “are already concentrating on next year's car in the wind tunnel” McLaren CEO Zak Brown has wondered if the future of F1 engines is “electric? Is it some form of hybrid? Is it even hydrogen?” What he is “comfortable in is that F1 will continue to develop in whichever way the world goes” He is also “not worried about whether F1 will be out of date in ten years. F1 always moves with the times” 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg feels that Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel “needed a change, because he was in a negative spiral at Ferrari and that was not a nice experience at the end” Rosberg is also happy for Vettel as he feels that “he will again be the hero who is celebrated. With success he can just be the same again. He is still one of the best” The Portuguese GP has been officially confirmed for the 2021 season The FIA has released a statement confirming that “a high-level working group has been established including current and potential Power Unit manufacturers and fuel suppliers” They also stated that “all teams recognized the major importance of engaging fans in new and innovative ways to ensure an even more exciting weekend format” “There was, therefore, broad support from all parties for a new qualifying format at some races, and a working group has been tasked with creating a complete plan with the aim to reach a final decision before the start for the 2021 Championship” F2 driver Guanyu Zhou has explained how “in the past, drivers who finish in the top three in Formula 2 move on to Formula 1 the following year” He further thinks that if he “can do that”, he has a “good chance of moving up to Formula 1” Former F1 driver Pastor Maldonado has revealed that joining Lotus in 2014 “was a very logical choice. They had big names as sponsors, as well as brands with an interest in” his country However, later it became “a very different team. Eric Boullier had left the team, everyone was gone. There was a lot of stress and” they “didn't know what to do” “The simulator was stopped because there was no money to reactivate it. And in the simulator, there were only two or three circuits uploaded, because each circuit cost 20,000 euros” Should driver salaries be included in the F1 cost cap?
Red Bull is pressing ahead with taking over Honda's F1 engine when the Japanese manufacturer exits at the end of this year. Even though the team has the development freeze it required to make this a realistic option, taking over the running of an F1 engine is still a huge task that will involve it partnering up with a specialist and creating its own engine department. In this video Scott Mitchell explains what Red Bull needs to put in place, how it will run the engine operation, what it will call the Honda engine when it takes over, and if this means we could see a Red Bull engine built from scratch for new engine rules in the future. With the new season of Formula 1 less than two months away, many expected Mercedes and 7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton to have finalized a new deal by now. However, nothing has been announced yet and there have even been suggestions that Mercedes may not want to meet Hamilton’s new demands. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff who also happens to partly own the team has now revealed the latest developments in this regard Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/Ugyvy214LAD8NbYoSAd4AaABCQ 0:00 - Wolff Explains Legal Curveballs behind Hamilton’s Contract Delay 1:42 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Wolff Explains Legal Curveballs behind Hamilton’s Contract Delay Wolff started off by reiterating that they will finalize the new deal “At some point we will finalize it. It's how it is with negotiations. You always come from different corners, but that's quite normal” He then explained why it is taking so much time “We have a really solid basis in our relationship. We have celebrated great successes together and want to continue doing so in the future. But sometimes you have to talk things out in detail, and that took, or still takes us some time” Wolff then explained how the lawyers are having a difficult time with the negotiations taking place over Zoom “The lawyers are working hard. We don't make life easy for them, of course, when we both argue over Zoom and keep sending curveballs to the lawyers. [Hamilton is] in America now and I'm here [in Austria]” Wolff then confirmed a timeline by which the new deal will be signed “[It should be sorted] before Bahrain at the latest – you have to sign something at some point!” He summed up his words by elaborating on why they don’t need any threatening gestures “We never played the George Russell card. He did incredibly well and will one day be in a top car, but our longstanding partnership is not at all about making any threatening gestures. We know we want to race together. And now we have to negotiate the contract” Fast Feed Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan thinks that Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll “has the speed to be a world champion, he really, really does” Aston Martin team principal Otmar Szafnauer, meanwhile, added that their other driver Sebastian Vettel “will bring out the best in Lance, with Lance pushing Sebastian hard in return” He further feels that “it’s the ideal blend of experience, race-winning knowhow, and raw talent” McLaren's production director, Piers Thynne feels that their “switch to the Mercedes power unit” has “driven a huge amount of change and, essentially”, they’ve “been building a new car” He further revealed that “the number of new parts on the” 2021 “MCL35M is about the same as when” they “built the” 2020 MCL35 He also confirmed that “there are some challenges in certain areas at the moment – but that’s F1. If you’re not encountering any problems, then you’re probably not being aggressive enough” Toto Wolff definitely thinks that “Red Bull, with [Sergio] Perez, will be a much stronger opponent in terms of the constructors' championship” He also expects “Sergio to be very strong. It will also be interesting how he faces Verstappen. It's a new opponent” He further thinks that “Honda will really step on the gas to compete for the championship in their last year as a manufacturer. That's why it will be quite interesting” Head of engineering at AlphaTauri Jody Egginton, feels that they “should have been sixth in the championship” as “the car was good enough for it” He also accepts that they “didn't live up to it. There are many things” they “improved with, but unfortunately” they “didn't deliver the performance” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner thinks that the “Hydrogen Class at Le Mans offers an exciting glimpse into the future of sustainable motorsport” This is because it “promises both to advance the use of hydrogen in transportation, and also deliver exciting racing” McLaren’s technical director James Key thinks that their “strengths have been typically the high-speed corners” and “in terms of weaknesses”, they “still need to improve” “a bit in low speed” FIA president Jean Todt confirmed that they “are facing a difficult start to the season, because it is a difficult time for the whole planet” He added that “creativity is the key word when organizing major sporting events at this time”. They “need to have a different vision, and above all solidarity” Were Alpha Tauri good enough to have finished P6 in the constructors championship last year?
Mercedes has held an undisputed performance advantage ever since the hybrid era began apart from a brief challenge from Ferrari during certain parts of a couple of seasons. This has led to what many have characterized as uninteresting racing due to Mercedes’ supremacy since 2014. Red Bull and Ferrari team principals, Christian Horner and Mattia Binotto respectively have now offered their suggestions to solve this problem and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has responded Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgzQSTnIODD67peopeB4AaABCQ 0:00 - Wolff Finds Horner’s And Binotto’s Suggestions An ‘Insult’ 2:31 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Wolff Finds Horner’s And Binotto’s Suggestions An ‘Insult’ Horner began by offering his suggestion “There should be a mechanism so that you are not pushed into a corner where you have to drag around a performance deficit for three years” “Maybe there should still be a mechanism between the seasons. The easiest way would be to adjust the fuel flow. They have all the information and can measure the performance output of the engines” Binotto added to that “The goal is not to equalize all manufacturers in their performance. That's why I would call it engine alignment, because it's the only way to help a manufacturer if he does have significantly less performance” Wolff in response began by pointing out how there was a token system in the past aimed at achieving something similar and how it was discontinued “If you remember. We once had a token system when the regulations came out. And because some of our colleagues wanted the tokens to be removed again so that they could catch up, we agreed to discontinue the tokens” He then explained why balancing performance is like an insult “And now some of our colleagues are coming around the corner with a convergence system, which, to be honest, is a small insult. Ferrari had the best engine in 2018, and by far the best in 2019. We developed our engine and went over the limit to bring something in 2020 that we wanted to catch up with” He further pointed out the humiliation in another engine-manufacturer asking for equalizing engine performance “And that's why I can't understand why a manufacturer who believes in their ability to develop power units and chassis would want such a mechanism that balances the power units. I don't think anyone would accept such humiliation in public” Wolff also explained how creating a level field this way would be very difficult “I've said it before. For me this would be the beginning of the end. It doesn't fit with Formula 1's DNA and because engines can be judged not only by power (but also weight, cooling and drivability). A simple formula that works for everyone is not possible” Horner summed up his response to Wolff’s reluctance “Why should Toto with the best engine in Formula 1 want to give everyone else the opportunity to catch up with them? A freeze is great from his point of view, especially without alignment” Fast Feed Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has suggested that former F1 driver Romain Grosjean “was for sure very fast. On a good day, Romain was one of the best ones out there” However, “he sometimes pushed and tried too hard. Then you see those errors. He just went over the limit and then the errors come” McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo pointed out that “this year”, they “have the Mercedes engine to get used to” and he is “getting settled into a new team with hardly any testing” As such, they “weren't going to be anywhere near” their “best in Melbourne if it was in March, so personally” he’s “more confident” they’ll “be stronger in November” Sergio Sette Camara, reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri in 2020 has revealed that Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko “is different, his driver academy is the best and you see the results” He added that “the bottom line is that Red Bull is investing in the programme, and Marko is doing a great job” He also suggested that maybe Marko “could be a bit less hard on the drivers, but he has a different method” and “it works” Marko, meanwhile has pointed out that they “have a cost limit” and they “are also talking about reducing the drivers' salaries. To invest even more in the engines now makes no sense” He reiterated that if the engine freeze did not come into effect, it “would mean that Red Bull would have to drastically reconsider its place in Formula 1” Marko also confirmed that “everything is settled between” Red Bull and Honda to carry forward Honda’s F1 engine program after 2021 Red Bull’s Sergio Perez “was aware of the campaign by Mexican fans to keep” him “in Formula 1 and that was very special” Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali feels that “Formula 1 needs a competitive Ferrari, but” he’s “convinced they can step up again in 2021” Will Red Bull challenge for the title this year?
