We delivered a display of incredible heart and character to secure a goalless draw in the first leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final with Liverpool despite playing with 10 men for more than 67 minutes at Anfield. With Granit Xhaka sent off midway through the first half for a tackle on Diogo Jota, we stood firm, dug in and showed a steely resolve to frustrate the home side. Such a performance delighted Mikel Arteta and his staff, and means it will be winner-takes-all in the second leg at Emirates Stadium next week. With Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe and Takehiro Tomiyasu all ruled out of this match, numbers were tight and we had to name a young bench. The hosts, who were almost at full strength apart from those away on Africa Cup of Nations duty, made a fast start and Aaron Ramsdale had to be alert to deal with a teasing Andy Robertson cross. We soon lost Cedric to injury to further disrupt Arteta’s plans, and not long afterwards Roberto Firmino looked certain to score when he met another cross from the left only for Ben White to clear off the line. We were up against it, and the task suddenly became even greater when Xhaka was sent off for taking out Diogo Jota as the last man in the 23rd minute. Arteta reacted immediately by taking off Eddie Nketiah and bringing on Rob Holding and switching to a back three in an effort to stifle the home attack, and it had the desired effect for the rest of the first half. Immediately after the restart, Takumi Minamino came close with a cross that nearly flew into the top corner as the hosts laid siege to our goal. But for all their dominance, we stood firm – getting men behind the ball, defending as though our lives depended on it and, led by the superb Bukayo Saka, proving a threat on the break. Anfield was getting increasingly restless as we entered the final 20 minutes, and with Arteta and his staff willing the team on animatedly from the touchline, we were growing in confidence. We then carved out a big chance as Kieran Tierney rampaged forward, and his cross was touched on by Saka in the area before taking a shot that Alisson saved. It was tight and tense, but in the last minute Liverpool were presented with a huge chance when Ramsdale’s punch came to Minamino in the box, but with an open goal he flashed his shot over the bar. Despite some late pressure, we stood firm to hold out for what felt like a huge draw considering the circumstances. What a display of character. #arsenal #saka #ramsdale Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Emile Smith Rowe, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. Eddie Nketiah scored his first senior hat-trick and Charlie Patino scored on his debut as we sealed our place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a comprehensive victory against Sunderland. We came into the match in fine form in the competition, having scored 11 times without concession – and Mikel Arteta picked a mix of youth and experience in his line up. While much of the pre-match talk centred around the inclusion of 18-year-old Charlie Patino in the matchday squad for the first time, the starting XI had a job to do and they set about it instantly. Within five minutes Nketiah had headed a fine Cedric cross over the bar, and it set a theme as we focused many of our attacks down that flank. Our Portuguese right back soon found Flo Balogun at the back post with another accurate delivery, but the striker headed wide – and then saw a low shot saved moments later. Cedric continued to get forward at will into dangerous areas – and he played a key role in our opener, sending in a fine corner that Rob Holding directed towards goal, and while the header was saved, Nketiah was there to force it over the line. We doubled our advantage not long afterwards, Cedric combining with Nicolas Pepe on the overlaps before cutting the ball back to the Ivorian forward in the area, and his shot flew into the roof of the net. It was a fine way for Pepe to mark his 100th game in our colours. It was plain sailing at this point, but Sunderland got themselves back into the game with a well-worked move that saw Nathan Broadhead race in behind our defence and beat Bernd Leno. Our goalkeeper had to be alert a few minutes later to push a goalbound effort from Carl Winchester around the post, and while Emile Smith Rowe went close at the other end there was no further troubling of the scoresheet before the interval. But just four minutes into the second half we extended our advantage again as Nuno Tavares got into space down the left and delivered a fine cross to the near post, for Nketiah to finish confidently for his second of the night. The visitors continued to come forward and came close with a curling effort from Elliot Embleton that struck the outside of the post. Nketah completed his hat-trick in fine style, backheeling home after superb work from Martin Odegaard and Nicolas Pepe. Patino came on to warm applause as the 886th player to represent the club with 10 minutes remaining, and claimed a fairytale debut goal in injury time as he poked home Pepe’s cross. It was a fantastic moment, but the night belonged to Nketiah who walked off with the match ball having sealed our place in the semi-finals. #arsenal #nketiah #patino Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Emile Smith Rowe, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. We booked our place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after second half goals from Calum Chambers and Eddie Nketiah saw off the challenge of Leeds. Coming into the game off the back of a hugely-encouraging win against Aston Villa and ahead of a tricky clash at Leicester this weekend, it was no surprise to see Mikel Arteta shuffle his pack. There were nine changes to the team, with just Ben White and Emile Smith Rowe retaining their places – but most of the attention was focused on the bench, where Salah Oulad M'Hand was included for the first time. We made much of the early running in a tightly-contested first half, with Eddie Nketiah dragging a shot wide and Sead Kolasinac’s effort from a tight angle saved. But Leeds posed a real threat on the break, and had a clear sight of goal when Diego Llorente played a pinpoint ball over the back of our defence for Dan James to race in to, but Bernd Leno saved his shot. Our German goalkeeper then made an outstanding save to deny Jack Harrison, after the Leeds man took aim with a fierce shot at the back post, before Smith Rowe flashed one over at the other end. That was it for the first half, but after the interval we took the lead when Chambers – on for the injured Ben White seconds earlier – headed the ball over the line, and after a long pause, the goalline technology awarded it. We doubled our advantage when Nketiah – up against his former loan club – took advantage of an underhit headed backpass by racing on to it, lifting the ball past Illan Meslier and rolling it in for our second of the night. It was the striker’s seventh goal in eight Carabao Cup matches – for both us and Leeds. There was still time for Alex Lacazette to rob Kalvin Phillips and race through, but he blasted his shot over – but it mattered not, our place in the quarter-finals was secure. #arsenal #gabriel #ramsdale Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Emile Smith Rowe, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. Alexandre Lacazette grabbed a late, late equaliser to salvage a point against Palace. In a topsy-turvy game, we had looked to be in control after taking an early lead through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But two mistakes in the midfield after the break were ruthlessly punished by Palace, leaving us staring at the prospect of a fourth league defeat of the season. But with virtually the very last kick of the game, substitute Lacazette was in the right place to tuck home the loose ball from close range when Ben White's shot was parried. In the end we had to settle for a point, but it looked like being so much more than that after a promising start. Having waited an extra couple of days to return to action after the latest international break, we were raring to go early on, taking the game to our visitors from the off. The early pressure soon paid off, and it was the skipper who got the opener. Takehiro Tomiyasu and Nicolas Pepe exchanged passes on the edge of the area before the latter forced a diving save from Vicente Guaita. Aubameyang was in the right place to volley home left footed at the far post. It was no more than we deserved from a lively start. We kept the intensity up, but Emile Smith Rowe's low shot aside, couldn't extend our advantage, failing to build on the early lead. In fact it was Palace who slowly grew into the game, and the forward trio of Christian Benteke, Jordan Ayew and Odsonne Edouard were beginning to unsettle our defence. And just on the stroke of half-time Aaron Ramsdale had to be alert to tip Conor Gallagher's long-range effort just wide. Bukayo Saka - on the end of a nasty looking kick from James McArthur earlier in the first half - could not return after the interval and was replaced by Sambi Lokonga. Within five minutes of the restart Palace were level. Thomas Partey was caught in possession outside the box, Benteke took the ball on and finished smartly low to Ramsdale's left. Palace were on top now, and Ayew stung Ramsdale's gloves from 20 yards. Mikel Arteta sent on Alexandre Lacazette for the last 20 minutes or so and the Frenchman immediately set up a chance for Smith Rowe, but he fluffed his shot. Lacazette was then set up wonderfully by Aubameyang – Laca's shot was kept out by a full-stretch Guaita save. But it was Palace who struck next, again making the most of sloppy play from Arsenal. This time Lokonga was dispossessed, Palace broke and Edouard lashed in off the underside of the bar. Kieran Tierney rattled the crossbar from close range late on, and it looked as though it would be former Gunner Patrick Vieira and his side who would take the spoils. But then Lacazette made his late, late intervention. Deep into the last minute of injury time we won a corner. The ball fell to White inside the box, his shot was saved by Guaita, but Laca - lively throughout his cameo - made no mistake with the rebound. #arsenal #lacazette #aubameyang Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Emile Smith Rowe, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. We won the north London derby with a dazzling display of first-half football at a sun-drenched Emirates Stadium to blow Tottenham away on Sunday. We came into this game off the back of three successive wins, and with confidence returning we immediately stamped our authority on the game. With Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey snapping into tackles, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired up and making his presence felt, we unsettled the visitors all over the park. Roared on by an incredible atmosphere inside Emirates Stadium, we took the lead with a goal made in Hale End as Bukayo Saka picked out Emile Smith Rowe in the area and the 21-year-old slotted home to spark jubilant celebrations. Partey then saw a goalbound shot palmed around the post by Hugo Lloris as we continued to pile on the pressure, but the Tottenham goalkeeper could do nothing about our second. Surely already a contender for goal of the season, the move started from the back as Xhaka did well to turn out of pressure on the edge of his area, launching a slick counter attack involving Martin Odegaard, Kieran Tierney, Aubameyang and Smith Rowe. Our captain played the opening goalscorer into space with a superb flick and Smith Rowe raced into the area, before cutting the ball back to Aubameyang to finish left footed – and the forward celebrated a la Thierry Henry in the corner. It was just reward for a team performance full of energy, endeavour and quality – and we didn’t have long to wait for our third as our Hale End graduates combined again. This time Smith Rowe collected the ball in his own half, and played the ball into space on the right for Saka. The England international raced at goal, and after being tackled by Harry Kane in the area, the ball broke kindly for him and he slotted low beyond Lloris to make it three. The visitors struggled to mount a response before the interval, although Kane did head inches wide from a corner but they did pose more of a threat after half time. Aaron Ramsdale had to be alert to palm away a Kane shot, and then minutes later the England captain lifted a shot over our goalkeeper but it drifted wide. But back we came, with the irrepressible Saka cutting in from the right and calling Lloris into action again with a curling shot. Son pulled one back for the visitors towards the end, but it did little to take the gloss off a fine afternoon in N5 as we made it four wins on the bounce. #arsenal #tottenham #aubameyang #smithrowe #saka Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Emile Smith Rowe, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. We booked our place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a convincing victory over AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday night. Roared on by a vociferous home crowd, we made a sharp start to the game as Gabi Martinelli caused problems for the Dons defence from the off. Indeed, it was the Brazilian who won the penalty for the opening goal as he reacted swiftly to latch on to an Eddie Nketiah through ball, before being bundled over in the area. Alex Lacazette stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, sending it into the bottom right-hand corner. We continued to threaten sporadically through a low-key first half, but save for a corner that looped up threateningly and bounced in the Wimbledon six-yard box, there was little in the way of goalmouth action. Partey took aim just before the hour mark with a powerful drive from the edge of the area that Nik Tzanev did well to palm around the post – and the Wimbledon keeper had to be sharp to deny Nuno Tavares soon afterwards. We were pushing and pushing for the second, and finally with 13 minutes remaining we had it as Emile Smith Rowe doubled our advantage from close range. Two minutes later we added a third – and this was the best of the night – as Cedric raced into the area and pulled the ball back, for Nketiah to flick into the far corner with a backheel. There was still time for Bukayo Saka to go close twice before the final whistle, but in the end we had to settle for the three goals and a place in the next round. #arsenal #nketiah #smithrowe #lacazette Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Emile Smith Rowe, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more.
