In the next few sessions of StudyBall, we are going to take a look at the Sunday Wild Card matchups! We are going to start with the Cowboys and 49ers. This session is just going to be on Jimmy G. He is so up and down. Even in the course of a game, he can be so good and so bad (if you want to use that term). He can miss so many things in the course of the game. I believe he is the key in determining how far the 49ers can go. Let’s take a look at just this past week against the Rams. I know he brought his team back and won but I wanted to show you over the course of the game the discrepancy between the really good and the things he misses or leaves out on the field. Jimmy G in a nutshell for one game. The extreme highs, the big time throws. And then, over the course of the game, you go through all of the stuff that he leaves out there. All the missed opportunities that he had were obvious. Instead of just leaving the field understanding what you’re going to read and getting the ball out to the right guy. That’s going to be key against the Cowboys, especially because they are a team that turns the football over. But it’s going to be key throughout the playoffs. However far they go, Jimmy G being able to see the field and make the right decisions most of the time, will determine how far the 49ers go. #NFLPlayoffs #JimmyGaroppolo #49ers

Keep those numbers up and people seem to be enjoying this channel so share it as well! Now as we get into the breakdown today, I want to look back and maybe the most disappointing moment of last weekend was the Colts going down to Jacksonville. The Jags have been struggling, the Colts have been playing really well. We all know what the result was. Important play-in game for the Colts and didn’t get it done. As you know, I like to break down the quarterbacks. Carson Wentz really had an up and down year. Never played with consistency. Never played with the understanding of what he was seeing to me to make the right throws in critical moments to be able to take this team to another level. Really good defense, great running back, and Carson never came into that point where he was THAT guy. That showed up again on Sunday. This is going to be a look at Carson Wentz and the point in time of his career and where I believe he has to get better moving forward if he wants to be that franchise guy. Hopefully in Indy because they did some good things down the stretch this year. There are certain things he has to get better with if he wants to be THAT guy. Let’s take a look. You see all the little things. Quarterbacks, coaches, continually work on getting your eyes in the right spot. Understand the big picture of the concept. Understand who you’re putting pressure on defensively. Get your eyes there right now. You don’t need to look off that much. Looking off is not that big of a deal as people say it is. Yes there are certain routes where we want to look people off. Go Routes holding that free safety, working double seams: work the free safety to one side and throw to the other. But on most good concepts, you don’t have to hold a backside safety to throw it front side. There is now reason to get your eyes over there. Get your eyes on the right guy, get a definitive answer as to who you are reading and where I need to throw the football. Too many guys spend too much time looking at things they don’t need to look at and it gives them all kinds of problems because they hold the football too long and you take sacks. Carson Wentz has got to get better at this. This is what he struggled with last year in Philly. Not knowing where to get his eyes right off the bat and you see having some of those same issues with Indy this year. Although Frank Reich did a better job of calling concepts to get his eyes in the right spot. Earlier, it comes back to haunt you every single time if you have got to hold the football. If you’re not sure where the ball or your eyes have to go and you’re looking all over the place, that means you don’t know what you are looking at and you’re just trying to find someone open. You play in that world, especially in the higher levels you get to, the more you are going to struggle.
During 1on1’s in Green Bay, packers players showed up. Their QB threw some dimes, insane catches were made and even a fight broke out! The Arizona Cardinals have been going through some struggles as of late, but they broke out in a nice way against the Dallas Cowboys this weekend, one of the hottest teams in the league, so you know they are feeling very confident. Heading into the last weekend of the year, there's still a lot to be determined...but you’re always looking at the teams that are playing their best football or are getting hot at the right time. The Cardinals are going to have to continue that this weekend against the Seattle Seahawks and get that roll going kind of like the early part of the year. Get that offense rolling as they get into the playoffs. If they do that, this is one of the most dangerous teams heading in even if they don’t win the division, it’s one of those teams you don’t want to face. When they are at their best, the Cardinals are pushing the ball down the field. Kyler Murray is using that special arm and special throwing ability to make big second level plays. When they struggled this year and went on that losing streak, they weren’t getting those big plays. They didn’t have the guys like Deandre Hopkins who went out to get those big plays for him. Not the consistency there. So you got a few plays in this game. AJ Green, Christian Kirk, Wesley: all of those guys making big plays for them. It’s what they are going to need because that is how they are built. They can dink and dunk you, they will run the football, but really where they are different is the ability to attack down the field and specifically because they have a quarterback that has the gifts to be able to attack down the field with his right arm. So something to pay attention to as they move forward is he is going to take those chances. Those 1 on 1 throws down the field. Do they hit those throws? Second part: Kyler, being more judicious with the football and those situations. “Yeah I got a perfect look presnap,” doesn’t mean it’s going to play out like you want to postsnap. You have to be able to understand what you got. You have to be able to see the relationship, see if that guy wins and not just throw it up. I want to see him grow a little bit in that. See it, throw it if it’s there, if not throw it down to those other guys that are open and give yourself a shot on some of those under and quick throws that can still be big plays against man to man coverage. The last thing, scoring points is what this team did earlier in the year. Scoring 30 plus points a game, scoring on everyone. Got to be more efficient in the redzone. I believe it’s going to play into having to make more plays in the passing game in the redzone. They are so good at running it. James Connor has been great, you compliment that with Kyler and the RPO and zone reads, they are almost unstoppable when you get down tight. You pressure them, get the ball out of Kyler’s hands from a running standpoint and you force those other guys to beat you, or you force the scheme to beat you in the redzone, that is where the Cardinals have to be better. If they get better in that area, they get the big plays, this is a team that no one wants to play, especially because they have been really good on the road. But, you eliminate some of those things, you force Kyler into having to throw the ball up into those man to man situations that aren’t ideal, now you have a chance to beat this Cardinals team. #NFL #Cardinals #KylerMurray
I played a lot of football games in my career. Never once did I throw for over 500 yards. Joe Burrow, in his second year, threw for 525 yards last Sunday, one of the top 5 passing performances in the history of the NFL! Pretty impressive...so when you have a performance like that, you figure we have to take it into StudyBall and we've got to take a look at what he did in that game against the Ravens and what calculated to that big day for Joe Burrow. As is always the case, there are still have some things that he can get better at. Knowing where your eyes need to go, know what you’re reading right off the bat. Get your feet tied to the route, be ready to throw the route on time so in tight windows no one touches the ball except your receivers. Joe Burrow is getting it out on time. That, to me, is what playing the quarterback position is all about and why he is up on the list of top quarterbacks in this league who understands how to play the position. Can he make some great throws? Absolutely but maybe not like some other guys in the league. But those, to me, are great throws. Money throws, front shoulder, on time, allowing your playmakers to make those plays: that’s the play of a great quarterback! #NFL #JoeBurrow #Bengals
