Thomas Müller sorgte mit zwei Treffern für die frühe Führung: In der 12. Minute brachte er den deutschen Rekordmeister per Dropkick in Führung, drei Minuten später profitierte er von der guten Vorarbeit Serge Gnabrys und drückte den Ball aus kurzer Distanz über die Linie. Noch dicker kam es für Ulms Schlussmann Christian Ortag in Minute 33, als er bei einer Verteidigungsaktion mit seinem Teamkollegen Niklas Kolbe zusammenstieß und mit einer Kopfverletzung ausgewechselt wurde. Seine Position übernahm Ersatz-Keeper Marvin Seybold. Nach dem Seitenwechsel dauerte es einige Minuten, bis das Spiel wieder Fahrt aufnahm. Mathys Tel und Jamal Musiala versuchten sich mit Abschlüssen, blieben dabei aber erfolglos. Auch nach der Einwechslung von Starstürmer Harry Kane, der zugleich sein DFB-Pokal-Debüt gab, verlief das Spiel ruhig. Sehr gut fügte sich Michael Olise nach der Einwechslung ein: Der Neuzugang bereitete in der 79. Minute den Treffer zum 3:0 vor, als er sich gekonnt in den Strafraum dribbelte und für Kingsley Coman auflegte, der den Ball unter Bedrängnis ins rechte untere Toreck schob. Wenige Sekunden vor Schluss sollte Kane dann noch zünden: In der 90.+4 Minute kam der Engländer unbedrängt nach einer Müller-Flanke zum Kopfball und nickte ins linke Toreck zum Endstand von 4:0 ein.
