Nach einer knappen Viertelstunde war Florian Wirtz (15.) auf der Gegenseite erstmals durch, schoss aber Julian Krahl an. Lauterns Schlussmann flog dann kurz darauf vergebens dem Ball hinterher: Granit Xhaka (16.) war vorangegangen und zog aus etwa 25 Metern fulminant ab - das 1:0. Immer mehr schnürten die Leverkusener nun den Zweitligisten ein, der viel hinterherrannte. Julian Krahl hechtete an einer Hereingabe von Alejandro Grimaldo vorbei, Patrick Schick verpasste jedoch. Nach einem rüden Foul von Odilon Kossounou (44.) an Boris Tomiak herrschte helle Aufregung - Schiedsrichter Bastian Dankert zeigte dem bereits verwarnten Abwehrspieler die Ampelkarte - Gelb-Rot! Die kurzfristige Konfusion hätte Tobias Raschl (45. +3) fast zum Ausgleich genutzt, aber sein Flachschuss zischte am Pfosten vorbei. Kurz nach dem Wechsel hatte Bastian Dankert die Partie für einige Minuten unterbrochen, weil aus dem FCK-Block Leuchtraketen flogen und Böller knallten. Auch Bayer-Fans zündeten Pyrotechnik. Als sich der Rauch verzog, suchte Leverkusen die Vorentscheidung - zeigte aber kaum etwas von seinem gewohnten Ballzauber. Der eingewechselte Agnar Rache schoss nach einer knappen Stunde erst knapp an Lukas Hrádeckýs Tor vorbei und zwang kurz danach den Keeper zu einer Glanzparade. Lautern ließ nicht locker und wagte sich immer häufiger nach vorn, während die Alonso-Elf das Spiel einfach nicht beruhigen konnte. Am Ende aber schaffte Leverkusen als sechster Verein das Double.
