India's spirits are soaring sky-high after a stellar performance in Mohali led by Shivam Dube's scintillating 60 off 40 in the run chase and a crucial wicket in the first inning. Youngster Jitesh Sharma too added fireworks with the bat and stabilized the middle order and Rinku Singh helped India chase 158 and with Virat Kohli back in the pack for the rest of the series the team looks rock-solid and much more assured. Afghanistan though posted a decent total last time thanks to the ‘President’ Mohammad Nabi’s fantastic knock down the order. However the tourists missed the magic of Rashid Khan due to a back injury and that huge void was indeed felt. The hosts clinched the victory and now India’s eyes are set on sealing the series in Indore. The anticipation is through the roof and we're in for another exciting showdown! Also the good news for all the staunch cricket enthusiasts is that the two greats of the sport. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be together seen donning the Blues in the shortest format for the first time since the T20 World Cup 2022 Semi-Final. It is now time for the 2nd T20I between India and Afghanistan at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. India are already 1-0 up in the three-game series and will look to seal the series right away. It was a very chilly evening in Mohali last time around and on a stellar batting track Afghanistan put on a decent total which was well below par. The dynamic duo of Ibrahim Zadran and Gurbaz up top did get runs under. Their belt but neither looked convincing enough. Rohit Sharma the skipper of India says there's no particular reason to bowl first and that it's just the nature of the ground. He says that it's a chasing ground with pretty small boundaries. He's happy with the previous game and says that the guys are executing the plans being spoken to them. Says that they have asked for specific roles for the guys and they are doing accordingly so far. not much they don't have any baggage and it is all about backing them allowing them to be free on the ground. He says that they will do things keeping the World Cup in mind but adds that they they know results are also important. Further adds that they want to try out a few things but the end result also matters a lot and winning is more important than anything. There's a huge roar in the crowd as he says Virat Kohli is in the XI with Yashasvi Jaiswal in place of Tilak Varma and Shubman Gill. Ibrahim Zadran the captain of Afghanistan says that they will try to bat well and put a good score on the board. Adds that they also wanted to bowl first due to the conditions and the ground being a small one. Tells that they made some mistakes in the last game and they have discussed about it and will look to execute their plans better. Says that Rahmat Shah is not playing and Noor Ahmad comes in for him. Ends by saying that playing an extra spinner is a tactical decision considering the ground conditions. PITCH REPORT: Deep Dasgupta and Nick Knight are pitch side. Nick Knight says that it's pretty much flat and traditionally a very high-scoring venue and obviously the smaller boundaries are one of the reasons. Adds that the surface is really flat and cracks are firm. Adds that there won't be any turn maybe a bit of a little movement initially with the new ball. He says that the team who wins would look to bat under the lights and with the dew coming batting first will have an additional advantage. India won the toss and elected to bowl first. Despite complaints about the changed ball Ravichandran Ashwin stood atop his mark at the CK Nayudu end from where he'd bowled unchanged through the morning even as Axar Patel limbered up hopefully. At the other end Marnus Labuschagne re-marked his guard. With only two runs left to get the No.1 Test batter skipped out to finish the game with an emphatic statement-making stroke off the No.1 bowler. He was beaten by the dip and reprieved with the ball hitting his back leg. Two balls later Labuschagne's attempts at an encore had something more of the desired effect and his celebratory roar was in keeping with the magnitude of what he and his team had achieved. It was 2-1 now with a game to go. Entering Ahmedabad there is a similar sense of the scoreboard not reflecting how the two sets of players see themselves. Australia their confident strut restored are a team in the ascendant. India aren't downbeat but they are increasingly looking towards their batters many of whom have had the onerous task of finding the right balance between attack and defence on surfaces that don't make the task easy. But there might be respite coming their way. For the visitors Indore was a big win but it was also a rare one. While it may be 1-2 right now it is also 2-12. That's the ledger in India for Australia since 2004. More broadly Australian sides have struggled to win consecutive Tests away from home. Australia resumed the third session at 71/1 with Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne negating the spinners well. The duo continued to pile on the runs and added 96 runs for the second wicket. Ravindra Jadeja redeemed himself by dismissing the Labuschagne with Australia trailing by just 1 run. Khawaja was brilliant with his gritty half-century. He was out playing the sweep against Jadeja. The quality left-arm spinner continued his good performance and blew the stand-in Aussie Test skipper (Smith) with a beauty. Australia were 156/4 after 54 overs at stumps with Peter Handscomb and Cameron Green keeping their wickets intact and have a handy lead of 47 runs. For India except Jadeja no one came close to picking a wicket and he finished the day with a four-wicket haul. Earlier in the Aussie first innings the openers Travis Head and Usman Khawaja attacked right from ball one. But Head was trapped plumb infront by Ravindra Jadeja just in the second over. Then Marnus Labuschagne and Khawaja played spin unbelievably well to take the team through to tea break without any further damage. However Labuschagne chopped one on to the stumps when he was at zero but Jadeja became the culprit for overstepping. India even burnt a couple of reviews in the urge of getting a breakthrough. A few overs later Ashwin trapped Labuschagne infront but Rohit Sharma wasn’t in favour of going upstairs. Even Rohit’s captaincy was way below par as he didn’t keep attacking field. Opting to bat first earlier in the day India were in deep waters from the get-go. However a couple of lucky reprieves for the Indian skipper in the first over didn't prove costly for the visitors. The Indian openers added 27 runs for the first wicket but once Rohit Sharma was out in an attempt to play a reckless shot in this rank turner the collapse began. India lost wickets in clusters and were at 84/7 at Lunch. Virat Kohli and Srikar Bharat did add a few handy runs but couldn't negate the spinners for a much longer period. Umesh Yadav smashed a couple of lusty blows on his comeback to steer the team over the score of 100 runs. Mohammed Siraj was the final man to bite the dust as a miscommunication between him and Axar Patel ended the Indian innings. For Australia Matthew Kuhnemann was the pick of the Aussie bowlers with the figures of 9-2-16-5 while Nathan Lyon picked three wickets. Usman Khawaja: "I played to my plans. Scored runs whenever there was a scoring opportunity. I was batting with Marnus good partnership to get. It was tough to bat with the new ball. Not an easy wicket to get runs. It was spinning out there. We will get to know better about the pitch tomorrow. It is hard to tell on Day 1. It was difficult time to bat throughout the time and we're not expecting to get any better. If that's how I can put it. I sweep on the length. If the line of an off-spinner goes down the leg then I sweep on the line. I used the sweep more intermittently. It is good to have the sweep in your arsenal. You keep guessing I tried to make the bowlers keep guessing as well. A bit of cat and mouse. It is dictated by the wicket. How the bowlers are bowling to you. With the trophy already being retained by India the visitors would hope to level the four-match series as they would aim to win the remaining two matches. India have been outrightly dominant in the home conditions mainly due to the fact that spin isn't everyone's cup of tea and especially when they face the duo of Ashwin-Jadeja. Moreover lethal seaming deliveries of Mohammed Shami have been quite effective in these conditions causing the visitors some serious trouble. Skipper Rohit Sharma has looked in touch with the bat as he thumped a classy century in the first game in Nagpur and again he could pile on plenty of runs in this game. Talking about Australia Everything is trouble at the moment for the visiting side. They are plagued with injuries along with their skipper Pat Cummins returning home to stay with his mother who is not well. Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb played resilient knocks in the Delhi Test and would be hoping to continue their show with support from other batters. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne couldn't really fire in the previous game as they fell victim to some brilliant bowling especially by R Ashwin. Can the Aussies turn things around? India Team News: Rohit Sharma has only one selection call to make. Persist with the now ex-vice captain KL Rahul or bring in the in-form Shubman Gill. Both batters have indulged in long practice sessions for two days in the build-up to this Test. However it was Gill that turned up alongside his captain for an optional net session on the eve of the match hinting that it may well be his turn to have a go in this series. The Indian captain however stated that training patterns or even the removal of Rahul's vice-captaincy were not indicators of selection to the XI. He also reiterated his claim that "players with potential going through a tough time will be given enough time to prove themselves." Make sense of all that if you will. Australia Team News: Australia will have a new captain and a fairly new-look bowling attack for this Test. Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc so long the subject of fitness scrutiny on the tour are finally expected to take the field in this series. The left-arm seamer will come in for Cummins and the all-rounder's return likely in place of Matt Renshaw. Australia are also likely to play their three spinners from Delhi and have a deeper five-man attack. However they haven't yet ruled out Lance Morris and his 'pace through the air' or an extra batter as options. What to expect: The summer is settling in ever so steadily in central India. While the mornings are still pleasant mid-afternoon temperatures will climb up to 34 degrees Celsius during the Test match. This will have an effect on the pitch which as Smith reckoned was dry from the six-meter good length towards the stumps on each side. So spin will continue to remain a big factor. India have made big scores in each of the two Tests played here. Neither of those games against New Zealand and Bangladesh however were played this late in the Indian season. And so as ever the first innings advantage will count for a lot and Australia for one will hope Smith will have imbibed Cummins' luck with the toss. Although it should be noted that Madhya Pradesh made 245 (won) and 241 (lost) in the fourth innings here in the Ranji Trophy quarters and semis respectively earlier this month. Time will tell. First things first. Outstanding effort from Rohit and Gill to put a double-century opening stand. 420 looked easily possible at one stage but the Blackcaps made a stellar comeback as the ball aged. Ball was stopping on the batters and India lost 6 wickets for 101 runs. Pressure was totally shifted back to India and it took a determined Hardik Pandya to steer them out of trouble again. Shardul gave him a great hand and the duo added a brisk 54-run stand to lift the dressing room again. Lockie and Santner were really good with the ball. Tickner was impressive too while Duffy was taken to the cleaners despite taking three wickets. New Zealand should fancy their chances too because they bat deep and if they have wickets in hands and if dew sets in it won't be easy for the Indian bowlers. If dew stays away we could see Kul-Cha trouble New Zealand. 386 is by no means an easy target but the dew factor can prove to be the ally for the Kiwis. They need a strong foundation at the top of the order or the asking rate will mount too much on them. Rohit is having a chat with his teammates in the huddle and everyone's body language is positive and relaxed. Hardik Pandya to start off with the new ball Despite Tom Latham calling it right and choosing to bowl first the Kiwi bowlers failed to start well with the ball allowing India to get off to a flyer. The visitors kept bowling loose deliveries and were blown away by the onslaught of the Indian openers. However once they broke the opening stand they clawed their way back into the game during the last 20 overs of their bowling effort. They kept chipping in with wickets at regular intervals and did not allow India to gather any momentum. Lockie Ferguson Mitchell Santner went wicketless today but bowled economical spells. Jacob Duffy and Blair Tickner accounted for three wickets each while Michael Bracewell finished with a wicket to his name. This has been a solid fightback by New Zealand and they have done extremely well to keep India under 400. At one stage India were on course to post a total in excess of 400 but they end up with 385 on the board. Having been sent into bat first India were off to a flying start courtesy of their openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Both batters notched up their respective hundreds and stitched a 212-run opening stand. However once this partnership was broken India lost their way in the innings and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The 54-run stand between Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur provided India with some much-needed impetus towards the back end of the innings. Despite failing to cross the 400-run mark India have a challenging total on the board. Having won the first two games India have already clinched the series. After sealing a narrow 12-run victory in the first match in Hyderabad the hosts discovered their vintage best to demolish the Blackcaps by eight wickets in the second fixture in Raipur. While Mohammed Shami answered his critics brilliantly Rohit Sharma unleashed himself to demoralize the visitors in the second half. However their only concern is Virat Kohli who is yet to fire in the series. So moving on to this game the Men in Blue would like the talismanic batter to regain his touch as they will enter the field to ensure a clean sweep. On the other hand New Zealand have had a forgettable tour so far. Despite Michael Bracewell's sensational knock they fell 12 runs short of the target in Hyderabad. However the Kiwis were a pale shadow of themselves in Raipur as they surrendered to the rampant Indian bowling unit. Importantly if we remove Bracewell's hundred none of the Kiwi batters has had an impact in the series. Their bowling has been equally woeful as Lockie Ferguson Henry Shipley and Blair Tickner have failed miserably to keep the Indians on their toes. So if they want to change their fortunes they must regroup and play with a nothing to lose approach in this clash. So who will win? Now that India have already secured the series the focus on the final ODI appears to dwindle with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the horizon. However when the game does eventually get underway things might change given it is set to be played in Indore - a venue that has gained reputation for being a batting beauty and is now set to host some elite stroke-makers. Just over three months ago South Africa and India played out a T20I in which Rilee Rossouw smashed a 48-ball 100. In total the ball sailed over the ropes 27 times on that night. Can that be replicated? Or even be topped given this is a 50-over contest? One cannot rule that out given both teams scored over 300 in both the innings in the first ODI. More importantly the visitors would hope for a better batting display from their top order that hasn't fired so far in the series. Finn Allen is yet to make a mark in the ODI format. Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell have been amongst the runs but didn't make an impression in these two games. Henry Nicholls hasn't done himself any favours as well in place of Kane Williamson. They probably won't get a better opportunity to get back amongst the runs despite the fact that their confidence would have been shaken after the second game. There's also a T20I series that's coming up so a good showing here will keep them in good stead ahead of those three games. Team News India: Will Rajat Patidar get a game? Seems unlikely. The batting order for India might remain unchanged. Umran Malik might get a go in place of either Mohammed Siraj or Mohammed Shami. Team News New Zealand: Will New Zealand throw in Jacob Duffy and Doug Bracewell straightaway on a batting paradise having not given them a game so far? What to expect: Clear skies are expected on match day. It's been more than five years since Indore hosted a 50-over contest.
