Former Boston Celtics reserve forward Grant Williams appeared on fellow former Celtic Theo Pinson‘s Tidal League “Run Your Race” podcast this summer, and the Charlotte native opened up about a host of topics from his time with the Celtics and with the Tennessee Volunteers before that. One of the stories he touched on was his experience playing against Golden State Warriors legend Stephen Curry. Williams emphasized Curry’s playing style and its effects on and off the ball. The most notable matchups, of course, came in the 2022 NBA Finals. The Celtics were up 2-1 in the series and had a 94-90 lead with 4:56 remaining in the fourth quarter of Game 4 at TD Garden. Boston had a chance to take a commanding 3-1 series lead -- an advantage that only one team has ever overcome to win the Finals. But over the last five minutes of that Game 4, the Warriors outscored the Celtics 17-3, and Curry had 10 of those points during that stretch. He finished 43 points in what ultimately became one of his legacy games. "We get to the Finals and we're up 2-1. We're like, 'Oh, we got it. It's our time. We're about to go get it," Williams said on a recent episode of the "Tidal League" podcast. "Game 4 we're leading the entire way. World Rugby has, over recent years, enacted multiple law changes under the guise of player safety and enhancing viewer experience. To add to the dismay, Owen Farrell, England's captain, was shown a red card, placing his World Cup campaign in jeopardy. While the protection of players is paramount and head-high tackles should indeed be penalized, the spate of cards shown in this match raises the question: Are the current laws enhancing player safety or merely sanitizing the very essence of the game? It's high time World Rugby reevaluates its stance. By stubbornly adhering to laws that detract from the spirit of the sport, they risk alienating a global fanbase. This isn't a plea for unchecked aggression or a return to the unchecked brutish ways of the past, but a call for balance. Rugby's beauty lies in its physicality blended with strategy, respect, and discipline. The laws should protect players but also respect the rich heritage of the game. England's win against Wales could have been a memorable battle, akin to the epic duels we've witnessed in the past. Instead, the narrative was hijacked by the frequent blare of the referee's whistle, punctuating what should have been an elegant dance of athleticism with staccato interruptions. World Rugby needs to ask itself – is this the legacy they envision for the sport? In conclusion, the England vs Wales match at Twickenham is a dire warning – a manifestation of laws gone awry. As custodians of this great sport, it's World Rugby's duty to listen, reflect, and act.
