An instant fan reaction to Michigan football's huge wint over the Ohio State Buckeyes in The Game 2021. Jim Harbaugh, Josh Gattis, Mike Macdonald and Michigan did mostly everything it needed to do in order to win this game 42-27 as it controlled the line of scrimmage and the trenches on both sides of the football. Hassan Haskins ran 28 times for 169 yards (6 yards per carry) and 5 touchdowns and Blake Corum ran 6 times for 87 yards (14.5 yards per carry) while TreVeyon Henderson averaged just 4.4 yards per carry on 17 carries (74 yards) and Miyan Williams had 7 carries for only 20 yards (2.9 yards per carry). C.J. Stroud did everything he could as a young, stud freshman quarterback in his first shot in this rivalry. He went 34/49 for 394 yards, 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. The main three receivers for the Buckeyes had excellent days as usual, but the Michigan defense was able to hold one of them (Olave) under 100 yards and none of them REALLY went bonkers. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 11 receptions for 127 yards, Garrett Wilson had 10 receptions for 119 yards and one (amazing) touchdown, and Chris Olave had 7 receptions for 88 yards. As speculated by the media, the Michigan edge rushers were in Stroud's face all game long, making it really difficult for him. Aidan Hutchinson ended up with 3 sacks on the day and broke the all-time Michigan single-season sack record (UNREAL- congratulations to him!) and David Ojabo added another 1 sack in this game. Ultimately, Ryan Day's team had a tough time and the play-calling wasn't the most ideal to most Buckeye fans. Jim Harbaugh earns his first victory as a coach in this rivalry (now 1-5 against his biggest foe) and will compete in the Big Ten Championship Game next Saturday in Indianapolis (Lucas Oil Stadium). GO BLUE!
Fast facts Matchup: No. 6 Michigan (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten) vs. No. 3 Ohio State (10-1, 8-0). Kickoff: Noon Saturday; Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor. TV/radio: Fox; WWJ-AM (950), WTKA-AM (1050). Line: Buckeyes by 8½. Scouting report When Michigan has the ball: The consistent approach from offensive coordinator Josh Gattis to run the ball, run some more and throw with supreme judiciousness has resulted in games unfolding in similar fashions. U-M's four closest games of the season were against Rutgers, Nebraska, Michigan State and Penn State, with a common theme developing across three of them. The Scarlet Knights (112), Spartans (146) and Nittany Lions (144) all held the Wolverines to fewer than 150 rushing yards in a season when U-M averages 218.4 yards per game. It’s not a coincidence: When Michigan is unable to control the clock with long possessions and consistently gain first downs on the ground, the games get dicey. So one of the primary questions entering Saturday is whether the offensive line can generate push in the trenches. The Buckeyes rank 11th in the nation in rushing defense with an average yield of 102.3 yards per game. They held the Spartans to 66 rushing yards during a 56-7 demolition in Columbus last week and have allowed an average of 72 over their last nine games. It’s unclear whether Gattis will have tailback Blake Corum (foot/ankle) at his disposal for Saturday’s game. Corum dropped out of the win over Indiana and did not play the last two weeks. “The key is just play our ball,” center Andrew Vastardis said, “and that’s through execution and knowing our assignments on offense and really do everything we can. Playing fundamentally sound, playing no turnovers and just doing the little things on offense to ensure that we’re succeeding in our part of the ball.” So I’m specifically addressing Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff when I say this: Please stop. Yes, I get it. There were a lot of offensive-holding calls in the Lions’ 16-14 loss to the Chicago Bears on Thursday at Ford Field. Most went against the Lions and some thwarted scoring drives. “They were getting these holding calls (against us),” he said. “The false starts are absolutely on us. Those can’t happen, but you can call holding on every single play. It’s no excuse. We’ve done it too much and I know those guys are hard on themselves front. The Chicago Bears take on the Detroit Lions during Week 12 of the 2021 NFL season.
