Fresh from her victory against four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek, Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala now faces World No. 4 Jessica Pegula for a spot in the final round of the Miami Open on Friday (Manila time). The match is being aired on A2Z Channel, Kapamilya Channel, and ABS-CBN News Channel. Eala, 19, has risen to No. 75 in the live WTA rankings after defeating Swiatek, World No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko and World No. 2 Madison Keys. Pegula, a former World No. 3 player who reached as high as No. 1 in doubles, presents a formidable challenge to the Pinay. Pegula previously advanced to the singles finals of the 2024 US Open and the 2023 WTA Finals and has won seven WTA singles titles. She proceeded to the Miami Open semifinals after taking out Emma Raducanu of Great Britain, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2, in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Surfers are entered into eight teams, either by sponsor, neighborhood, peer group, or some other affiliation. And competitively, it's definitely on. But, say event organizers, the whole thing is intended to “foster a sense of camaraderie, teamwork, and community spirit among the participants.” The event “emphasizes traditional Hawaiian surfing style and places importance on style, power, and respect for the ocean. Surfers are judged not only on their technical maneuvers but also on their overall approach, wave selection, and ability to navigate the tuberides and come out with control and style.” The holding period is from January 4th-16th, and in addition to the main team comp there will be individual Duke Specialty Events with men's and women's divisions in longboard, SUP and bodysurfing.
