Rafa Benitez admits replay against Blackburn is far from ideal
Rafa Benitez admits replay against Blackburn is far from ideal

Rafa Benitez admits replay against Blackburn is far from ideal. Rafael Benitez has admitted an FA Cup replay was almost the last thing he wanted after seeing Newcastle earn a 1-1 draw to deny Blackburn a third-round victory. Matt Ritchie's 85th-minute penalty spared the Premier League side's blushes after Bradley Dack had headed the visitors in front at St James' Park, although another game was not on Benitez's wish-list as he attempts to keep the club in the top flight. Asked if a replay was the worst possible scenario, he replied: "Yes, in terms of another game, another situation that you have to manage with more minutes, more players, more risk. "I am not happy with another game - I would prefer to win this game and that's it. But if you cannot, at least you have another chance and then try to win the next one." Benitez saw a team featuring eight changes to the one which started against Manchester United in midweek turn a disjointed display as the club attempted to avoid a seventh third-round exit since owner Mike Ashley took overalmost 12 years ago. On a day when takeover speculation and the prospect of another frustrating transfer window were among the main talking points, they rescued themselves in the nick of time to leave their manager at least able to take some positives. Benitez said: "Some young players playing, some players who have not been playing having 90 minutes under their belts, the reaction of the team after we conceded and (Florian) Lejeune coming back after four and a half months with aserious injury. Those are positives." If Benitez's relief at avoiding a ninth defeat in 12 home games this season was tempered by the prospect of a replay a matter of days before a crunch league clash with fellow strugglers Cardiff on Tyneside, opposite number Tony Mowbrayheaded back to Lancashire wondering what might have been. He said: "The dressing room is very quiet, very disappointed. We couldn't really see Newcastle scoring tonight, to be honest and yet maybe fatigue, I'm not sure, but a soft penalty - I haven't seen it back but VAR, obviously, confirmed it as a penalty, so we'll accept it. "It's just disappointing. The team that you saw tonight is the team that's just coming off the back of playing the top four in the Championship back-to-back - Norwich, Leeds, Sheffield United and West Brom - and that's the sort of performance-level we've given, really hard-working, honest. "We obviously could do with a bit more quality as we move the club forward if we're going to try to get out of this division, of course. The Championship, there are some massive clubs in there. "But we have got a great spirit and togetherness and camaraderie and it takes us a long way, and I thought that was evident today." Predict 6 correct scores for your chance to win £250K.

David Fizdale took over for Jeff Hornacek as the New York Knicks head coach after the 2017-18 season. After two losing seasons, an injury to Kristaps Porzingis and roster questions, there’s a task at hand for the 2018-19 campaign. Since the hire, Fizdale has looked to maintain a relationship with Porzingis, traveling to Latvia to visit New York’s star player. Though a return timetable remains unknown from the ACL tear, the meeting can develop a camaraderie between the two. The roster goes beyond Porzingis, with a roster of young talent and veterans set to embark on the 2018-19 season. Fizdale, who spoke to NBC New York (h/t New York Post), dove into his relationship with the former 2015 NBA draft pick and embraced the rookies set to become part of the roster, including Kevin Knox and Mitchell Robinson: “It’s already happening,” Fizdale said about the franchise’s rebirth in the interview with Channel 4’s Bruce Beck. “Kristaps will come back healthy. He was already having a big-time season last year when he got knocked down. We had an awesome draft with Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson and Allonzo Trier — our two-way player. Scott [Perry] and these guys are sticking to an awesome plan, bringing in guys maybe that didn’t work out at a place before but are high draft picks. [With] good player development, good culture, they can turn into something they were expected to be. We’re doing it the right way.” Fizdale referenced Porzingis’ 48 games from 2017-18, when he averaged a career-high 22.7 points and 39.5 percent from three-point range to start the post-Carmelo Anthony era. Along with 18.5 shot attempers per game, the Knicks’ offensive leader became clear. With the rookies, the Knicks selected Knox and Robinson in the first and second round, respectively, of the 2018 NBA Draft. Both were at the forefront of the organization’s summer-league squad, with Knox on the All-NBA Summer League First Team and Robinson’s average of 13 points and 10.2 rebounds. Trier, who went undrafted, made a name for himself on New York’s summer squad, with 17 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists. While he’s not on a rookie-scale deal, there’s still the chance for growth in the G League and the occasional appearance if the main roster needs an extra man. One of Fizdale’s comments may reference Mario Hezonja, a summer acquisition that signed a one-year deal. The Orlando Magic selected Hezonja at No. 5 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, but never found his footing and did not have the fourth year of his rookie contract picked up. That happened after a 35.5 shooting percentage in the Croatian’s sophomore year. *Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Conflicting reports swirl about a Spurs players’ meeting with Kawhi Leonard
Conflicting reports swirl about a Spurs players’ meeting with Kawhi Leonard

Whatever is going on between Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs, the situation is not improving and, with the end of the regular season approaching, his teammates decided to take matters into their own hands. The Spurs, led by Tony Parker, held a players-only meeting, with conflicting reports about what went on.Players “implored” Leonard to return to the lineup, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports, in a scene that was tense and emotional, Wojnarowski writes. He adds that several players expressed frustration with Leonard, who has played in only nine games because of a quadriceps injury. That description is at odds with one supplied by Jabari Young, who covers the team for the San Antonio Express-News.In the meeting, which he reports lasted five to 10 minutes, veterans wanted to know if and when he might play this season and reminded Leonard that there are 10 regular season games left.Leonard, whom Young writes was caught off guard by the meeting, told teammates that his goal was to return, but he offered no date for that.On Wednesday, one teammate said he is skeptical that Leonard will play this season.“He is not coming back,” Manu Ginobili said.“For me, he’s not coming back because it’s not helping [to think Leonard is returning].We fell for it a week ago again.I guess you guys [reporters] made us fall for it.But we have to think that he’s not coming back, that we are who we are, and that we got to fight without him. That shouldn’t be changing, at least until he is ready for the jump ball.” There is a growing sense of urgency as the playoffs approach. The Spurs, winners of five in a row, are sixth in the Western Conference playoff race, a game ahead of Minnesota and 1 1/2 ahead of Utah, with eight teams making the playoffs out of the West. The injury, which has limited Leonard to a Dec.12-Jan.13 stretch of games, has created a level of drama unusual to Gregg Popovich’s team with will-he-or-won’t-he-play reports swirling about Leonard’s status.Ginobili added that the situation was tough on Leonard, too.“It’s hard when you don’t practice with the team,” Ginobili said (via the San Antonio Express).“The bulk of the camaraderie is pregame, postgame and halftimes, when you are going through some adversity or trouble, and he is not with us most of the time. It’s hard, and I have been in that situation. Not [as long as he has], but for a month, month and a half, and it’s hard.Sometimes you feel like an alien to the core group and you have to fight through it.You have to make an effort to still be around and be part of the everyday topics and the good things and the bad things. You have to make an effort.” Earlier this month, Leonard told reporters he hopes to return this season.“I just have to keep doing what I am doing,” Leonard said.“The progression that I am making has been great.I just have to keep doing what I am doing.” [ Kawhi Leonard’s season could be over.Could he be finished with the Spurs, too? ] Leonard worked out recently, but Popovich said he n
