HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Leeds United (2-0) | Carabao Cup | Super sub Chambers & Nketiah
We booked our place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after second half goals from Calum Chambers and Eddie Nketiah saw off the challenge of Leeds. Coming into the game off the back of a hugely-encouraging win against Aston Villa and ahead of a tricky clash at Leicester this weekend, it was no surprise to see Mikel Arteta shuffle his pack. There were nine changes to the team, with just Ben White and Emile Smith Rowe retaining their places – but most of the attention was focused on the bench, where Salah Oulad M'Hand was included for the first time. We made much of the early running in a tightly-contested first half, with Eddie Nketiah dragging a shot wide and Sead Kolasinac’s effort from a tight angle saved. But Leeds posed a real threat on the break, and had a clear sight of goal when Diego Llorente played a pinpoint ball over the back of our defence for Dan James to race in to, but Bernd Leno saved his shot. Our German goalkeeper then made an outstanding save to deny Jack Harrison, after the Leeds man took aim with a fierce shot at the back post, before Smith Rowe flashed one over at the other end. That was it for the first half, but after the interval we took the lead when Chambers – on for the injured Ben White seconds earlier – headed the ball over the line, and after a long pause, the goalline technology awarded it. We doubled our advantage when Nketiah – up against his former loan club – took advantage of an underhit headed backpass by racing on to it, lifting the ball past Illan Meslier and rolling it in for our second of the night. It was the striker’s seventh goal in eight Carabao Cup matches – for both us and Leeds. Goalkeeper Alex Runarsson has joined us on a four-year contract from French club Dijon. The 25-year-old Iceland international (full name Runar Alex Runarsson) joined the Ligue 1 club in July 2018 and made 13 appearances for them in all competitions last season. Alex started his career with KR Reykjavik in his home country. He went on to join FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark, where he made 62 appearances during a three-year spell, before moving to Dijon. Technical director Edu said: “We’re very pleased to welcome Alex to our squad. HIGHLIGHTS | MK Dons vs Arsenal | Elneny, Nketiah, McGuinness, Nelson
We eased to a comfortable victory at Stadium MK on Tuesday evening as our pre-season campaign got off to a satisfying start. Coming just 24 days after the Emirates FA Cup final, this first friendly of the summer felt like a lightning-quick turnaround – but we wasted no time in getting going. With just four minutes on the clock, MK Dons goalkeeper Lee Nicholls scuffed his clearance and Mo Elneny – back from his loan spell in Turkey – reacted quickest to fire the ball into the top corner from 35 yards. It was quite the return for the Egyptian, and not long after we doubled our advantage as a flowing move saw Cedric Soares find Bukayo Saka, who cut the ball back for Eddie Nketiah to fire in. There was much excitement on social media about the first sighting of William Saliba in Arsenal colours, but in truth he was relatively untroubled – although one rapid turn of pace to race back and win the ball in the area got pulses racing. The Frenchman could do nothing though, to prevent the hosts pulling one back as they curled a ball in from the right and Rob Holding directed the ball past Bernd Leno and into his own goal. Mikel Arteta made six changes at the break as he sought to get minutes into the legs of the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock and we continued to drive forward. Nketiah had a goal disallowed before being replaced as we made five more changes for the final half hour, and Mark McGuinness extended our lead with a fine header.
