Usman generalmente ha sido considerado un campeón algo aburrido, pero hoy no fue así en absoluto. Al inicio de la pelea era evidente que ambos peleadores se conocían mucho y Burns conectó a Usman con una mano derecha enorme. El campeón se tambaleó y eso fue probablemente lo más dañado que lo hemos visto dentro del octágono. El brasileño tiró una patada y cayó al suelo, donde pasó gran parte del round, sin que Usman se atreviera a ir al suelo con él pero sin lograr levantarse. Así que Gilbert no pudo causar más daño y se llevó el asalto decisivamente, pero Usman sobrevivió su momento de mayor peligro en la pelea. En el segundo round los papeles se revirtieron, y esta vez fue Usman el que conectó una enorme mano derecha que aturdió a Burns y lo dejó tambaleándose. La finalización parecía cercana y Burns logró sobrevivir el round pero no se recuperó del todo en el minuto de descanso. Entre rounds el entrenador de Usman le dijo que logró ser campeón gracias a su jab, y que esa era la clave de esta pelea, y así fue. Usman conectó un perfecto jab mientras Burns intentaba atacar, y por segunda vez lo mandó a la lona con un golpe recto. Esta Usman no temió ir al suelo con Burns al verlo tan aturdido, y a pesar de que no entró en su guardia, logró conectar un espectacular golpeo a ras de lona, principalmente con golpes rectos descendentes que Gilbert no podía detener. El réferi le dio a Burns oportunidad de recuperarse, pero parecía que no había escapatoria, Usman jamás sería vencido en la lucha ni perdería la posición, y Burns estaba demasiado aturdido como para poder esquivar los golpes, así que en solo 34 segundos del tercer round el campeón nigeriano consiguió el nocaut técnico y retuvo el cinturón, consolidándose como uno de los campeones más dominantes de los últimos años. The Baylor standout became the 13th man in world history to clear 6.00m (19-8¼) indoors, doing so on his third attempt at the height on Saturday at the Texas Tech Shootout in Lubbock. Needless to say, that also bettered his previous collegiate record. Earlier in the competition, Lightfoot also cleared 5.80m (19-0¼) and 5.90m (19-4¼) to move ahead of Shawn Barber for the most 19-foot clearances in collegiate indoor history.
