When Arsenal Bid £40,000,001 For Luis Suárez
In the 2013 summer transfer window, Arsenal famously - or infamously - bid £40 million, plus £1, for Liverpool's star man Luis Suárez. The Gunners were told by the player's agent, Pere Guardiola, that Suarez had a £40 million release clause written into his Liverpool contract - but the bid was rejected, and it turned Arsenal's recruitment into a laughing stock.
