Lakers superstar Anthony Davis has been back on the floor for about 3.5 weeks after missing nearly 3 months. AD getting back on the floor and ramping up was critical for the team’s repeat hopes and I broke down how he’s looking in key movement components heading into the play-in game. Straight line speed AD has shown really good progress with his straight line speed on the court, whether that’s longer sprints for top end speed or on short recovery burst sprints. Change of direction AD continues to show improvement in his change of direction and getting back to his unique movement skills for a player of his size. Lateral movement Davis’ has been moving really well laterally. Jumping A key issue for AD when he returned was limited lift and limited rebound jumps but he’s progressed with both significantly. Contact/leverage A key thing I look for is how a player is responding to contact when they return from injury. AD is becoming more and more confident in absorbing and delivering contact. Acceleration Davis continues to progress with his acceleration and first step. If you remember, he reaggravated his achilles issue = on an acceleration so this progress gives a lot of insight into his improved health. Reaction AD’s reaction time and acclimation to game speed continues to improve. Rhythm and fluidity One of the last things to return after an extended absence is rhythm and fluidity in movements. AD is progressively showing each in all facets of his game. Confidence Last but certainly not least is confidence. After a long layoff or scary injury, players can have kinesiophobia (aka fear of movement or reinjury) which limits their movement. AD continues to show he’s over that fear with a variety of incredible plays. This bodes really well for the Lakers’ repeat hopes
