On Friday morning, the Boise State Broncos lost to the San Diego State Aztecs 27-16 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Cali. Boise State drops to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play to end the 2021 season. Since 2000, the Broncos only had one five-loss season. In 2013, during Chris Petersen's final year as Boise State's head coach, Boise State finished the season 8-5 after losing to Oregon State in the Hawaii Bowl. Since joining the Football Bowl Subdivision ahead of the 1996 season, Boise State has only one season with five or more losses. In 1997, the Broncos finished the season 4-7 and the program has never had more than five losses in a single season since then. Depending on how the bowl game goes, Boise State could be flirting with history to end the year. The Broncos should learn of their bowl destination in the coming days but with a five-loss season, they may likely stay home for the bowl season and play in the Idaho Famous Potato Bowl. The San Diego State Aztecs will now likely host the Mountain West Conference Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 4, against the Utah State Aggies.

However, like junior quarterback Hank Bachmeier said following the Broncos' first true-road win over an Associated Press Top 10 team since 2001, Boise State (3-3, 1-1) will enjoy the win for 24 hours and then turn their attention to the Air Force Academy Falcons (5-1, 1-1). The Falcons will be traveling to Idaho to play the Broncos on The Blue at Albertsons Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1. Boise State vs. San Jose State Mountain West Conference Championship post-game press conference

During the Broncos' flight to Las Vegas for the Mountain West Conference Championship, Boise State's offense must have lost its groove at baggage claim because it was nowhere to be found in their 20-34 loss to San Jose State. However, the team's equipment staff will have to wait until after the Broncos' post-game press conference. The conference title is the first-ever conference championship in program history for San Jose State and it is the first time since 1939 that the Spartans went undefeated. The 24th Spartans are also ranked in the top 25 for the first time ever. For the Broncos, it's a disappointing loss in their fourth-straight conference title game appearance and fifth championship game during coach Bryan Harsin's tenure.
