With the roaring sounds of engines, endurocross riders set off at blistering speed attempting to gain a foothold in a recent competition in Bugesera District, eastern Rwanda where they showcased some gravity-defying stunts through gruelling obstacles. Taking the race format of motocross, the sport combines the challenging aspects of an enduro, all packed into the tight confines of a fan-friendly stadium setting. Riders have to race over rock beds, through water crossings, over tractor tires and across telephone poles. Through various competitions in the region, riders have gained valuable experience and now participate in events across the country and region. The leadership of the Rwandan Automobile Club (RAC) has helped the sport’s popularity to soar with young riders coming up and taking on top performers in the region. Through the adrenaline rush and gruelling nature of the sport thousands of fans around the country have helped the sport grow, oftenly attending endurocross events like this in their thousands. Recently, 14-year-old Rwandan Hinkel Hendrick displayed exceptional enduro skills at the 2017 FIM Africa Central Africa cross country challenge that took place in Uganda finishing three laps of 25 kilometres. With more events like this, Rwanda can attract more riders at a young age, train them and build Rwanda’s name as an endurocross nation.
