University officials issued a statement Saturday night saying Abercrombie was being observed. Tigers coach Rod Reed headed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to check on the linebacker after the game. Reed told The Tennessean he was not sure exactly how or when the Atlanta native was hurt before coming to the sideline late in the second quarter of a 31-27 loss to Vanderbilt. "He came to the sideline and just kind of collapsed there," Reed said. Abercrombie was given oxygen on the sideline, then taken away on a stretcher. The linebacker redshirted at Illinois in 2016 and played 11 games in 2017 before transferring to Tennessee State. He came into Saturday's game as the Tigers' second-leading tackler and was credited with five tackles and a quarterback hurry before suffering the injury. After the game ended, players from both teams joined Reed and Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason for a prayer for Abercrombie, his family and the Tigers. "Football's what we do, not who we are," Mason said. "I know what it is to be a coach. I know what it is to have a player who's injured. At the end of the day, when serious injuries happen, football becomes secondary." Track: Far Out - Chains (feat. Alina Renae) [NCS Release] Music provided by NoCopyrightSounds. Speaking to ESPN's E:60 for an upcoming episode that will air March 11, Thomas said he thought the team was in "panic mode" when it shipped him to the Los Angeles Lakers along with Channing Frye and a 2018 first-round pick in exchange for Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. "I didn't think they would pull the trigger that fast, 15 games," Thomas said, per ESPN.com. "But again, it's a business. And the Cavs were, I mean, they were in panic mode. We were losing—a lot. And I think they felt like they needed to make a move, and they, they basically cleared house." Thomas, who missed the first 36 games of the season with a hip injury, also admitted it was difficult to join the team midway through the regular season. "It was a tough situation I was being put in," he said. "It was—it was different. ... It's hard to get acclimated to a team halfway through the season. "... I'm in a new system. New team, new coach, new players. And then I've been off for seven months. So I got to get—individually, I got to for the most part get my rhythm back, get my timing back." Thomas averaged 14.7 points and 4.5 assists while shooting 36.1 percent from the field and 25.3 percent from three in 15 games with the Cavaliers. During that time, Cleveland was outscored by a team-worst 15.1 points per 100 possessions when he was on the floor, according to NBA.com's lineup data. Since shipping Thomas to the Lakers, the Cavaliers have gone 4-1 and appeared rejuvenated thanks to an injection of young blood throughout their starting lineup and second unit. He rejected a contract from the Mavericks last summer that would have paid $17.5 annually to take his qualifying offer, and nearly every player who has accepted his qualifying offer has changed teams at first opportunity. Noel was out of the rotation, furthering the divide between him and the team. Now, he’s having surgery for a thumb injury some players keep playing through. That has people connecting dots from Noel to his agent, Rich Paul, to Paul’s biggest client, LeBron James, to rumors of LeBron leaving the Cavaliers for the Lakers next summer. Mike Fisher of DallasBasketball.com: Where is Noel going to have the surgery? In Cleveland, hometown of LeBron James and a headquarters for agent Rich Paul, who reps both LeBron and Noel and yeah, it’s kind of an open secret now that the fellas are plotting ways to end up together, maybe next July 1 via free agency to the Los Angeles Lakers. Maybe LeBron, Noel and Paul really are conspiring on a league-altering shakeup. But people love to speculate on LeBron’s free agency and Paul’s power. It’s juicy. It isn’t always reality. Remember when everyone sent Eric Bledsoe to Cleveland because Paul represented him? Noel would be an interesting fit with LeBron on the Lakers. They don’t necessarily have a long-term answer at center, and Noel’s defense and athleticism would complement LeBron’s and Lonzo Ball‘s transition skills. It’d become even more important for Ball to fix his outside shot, though, as Noel, unlike Brook Lopez, is a non-shooter. Another positive: Noel probably wouldn’t command a max deal – even with a LeBron/Paul boost – meaning maybe the Lakers could actually afford both. But wouldn’t it be so Lakers like if they sign Noel to a lucrative contract to impress LeBron and Paul and LeBron still signs elsewhere? That’s the type of fun speculation I can get behind. The decisive moment was a goal-line stand by South Carolina’s defense right at the end. A Jarrett Guarantano incompletion on the last play of the game was the nail in Tennessee’s coffin. Afterward, South Carolina QB Jake Bentley found a dejected Guarantano. This was the first start of Guarantano’s career, and it ended in just about the most disappointing way possible. His sadness is understandable, especially given that this was a loss to a division rival, at home, a week before Tennessee plays in Alabama, and as UT coach Butch Jones has been on the hot seat for weeks. Guarantano put forward a respectable effort: 11-of-18 passing for 133 yards, no touchdowns, and no picks. That came in a challenging spot, with a lot of pressure on him against a solid defense. He doesn’t have anything to be ashamed of. But it’s still nice that Bentley took the time to go find him. The reigning Spanish champions had gone ahead in the first half when Karim Benzema also opened his account in the division but Getafe levelled in controversial circumstances through Jorge Molina, who looked offside when he struck nine minutes into the second half. After that Ronaldo, whose five previous goals this term had come in the Champions League or Spanish Super Cup, somehow prodded wide from close range only to make amends with the winner in the 85th minute. Sevilla suffered an eighth successive league defeat at Athletic Bilbao to see their hopes of turning the heat up on La Liga leaders Barcelona dashed. With Barca facing unbeaten Atletico Madrid in the capital on Saturday evening, second-placed Sevilla could have cut the gap on the pacesetters to two points with victory at San Mames in the early kick-off. However, Sevilla have not picked up a single point from their trips to Athletic since 2009 and, despite the home side languishing in mid-table and without a win in six competitive matches, it was the Basque outfit who emerged victorious. That was thanks to Mikel Vesga's goal before half-time, with the midfielder coolly lofting his shot over Sergio Rico after Raul Garcia's attempted shot had deflected into his path just yards out.
