Legal battles between Florida State and the ACC are unfolding in courts, with the Florida State University Board of Trustees suing the Atlantic Coast Conference, and vice versa. This serves as a central hub for the latest developments in FSU's case, filed in Leon County, and the ACC's case, filed in Mecklenburg County, N.C., as the Seminoles explore the possibility of leaving the conference, potentially sparking further conference realignment. As of February 16, 2024, the ACC has petitioned a Leon County judge to dismiss Florida State's lawsuit, arguing that Florida is not the appropriate jurisdiction for the dispute, favoring North Carolina, the ACC's home state. The ACC's filing contends, "Florida State alleges no facts in support of its bare-bones venue allegation." On February 9, 2024, the first formal court hearing was scheduled for March 22 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, focusing on the ACC's lawsuit. Judge Louis A. Bledsoe III ordered the hearing to address the ACC's motion to seal portions of the case concerning confidential details, such as ESPN contract information, along with FSU's motion to dismiss the case. On February 7, 2024, Florida State filed a motion in a North Carolina court to dismiss the ACC's complaint against them. FSU argued that the ACC filed its lawsuit preemptively, before any dispute arose, and without proper support from member schools. Additionally, FSU contended that the case should be heard in Leon County, rather than Charlotte. On January 30, 2024, FSU filed an amended complaint in Leon County, accusing the ACC of "self-dealing," particularly highlighting former ACC commissioner John Swofford's actions regarding TV deals involving Raycom Sports, where his son worked. The complaint also criticized the ACC's decision to accept SMU, Cal, and Stanford, citing lower TV viewership compared to FSU.
