This new merged club was formed as part of a merger between football section of multi-sport club Mohun Bagan and former ISL side ATK. The club began to play from the 2020-21 season. The club's principal owner is RPSG Group chairman Sanjiv Goenka. Former India cricketer Sourav Ganguly and Utsav Parekh also serve as co-owners, along with Mohun Bagan. Former ATK coach Antonio López Habas is the current head coach of ATK Mohun Bagan. They contests the Kolkata Derby with long-time rivals East Bengal.The first derby match was played on 8 August 1921.It also has an intense rivalry with Mohammedan SC but the importance of this match has fizzled out in past two decades due to the fact that the teams only meet once a year in the Calcutta Football League. The Salt Lake Stadium serves as the club's home stadium, with a capacity of 85,000.
