Matthews tied his NHL career-high for goals, and Mitchell Marner had two assists for Toronto (40-19-5), which outshot Montreal 51-18. Kallgren made 14 saves in his fourth start in five games. The Maple Leafs have lost two of three and play the Florida Panthers on Sunday. William Nylander pulled Toronto even 2-2 at 7:33 of the third with a power-play goal. Matthews put the Maple Leafs ahead 1-0 at 36 seconds of the first period with a one-timer from the left face-off dot off a pass from Michael Bunting. He scored 47 goals in 70 games in 2019-20. David Savard tied it 1-1 at 9:44 of the second period when he tapped in Laurent Dauphin's pass across the front of the goal at the back door. Cole Caufield gave the Canadiens a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at 18:08. He took a pass from Chris Wideman and scored with a wrist shot over Kallgren's right shoulder.
