The Knicks wrapped up their preseason schedule Friday night with a loss to the Brooklyn Nets, ending a two-week stretch that brought clarity to some situations but left others unsettled leading into Wednesday's season opener. Ultimately preseason doesn't matter. The numbers any one player puts up (or doesn't put up) and a team's record have little importance. But certain trends can have some significance. Here are five thoughts and observations from the preseason: Kevin Knox has struggled, but will still start Knox started off preseason with a double-double against the Wizards, flashing the skills that the Knicks coveted when they drafted him. It was an ideal way for him to begin preseason. The 19-year-old had another double-double against the Pelicans in the third game, but he mostly had a tough preseason. Knox averaged 8.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He shot just 16-of-49 (32.6 percent) from the field and 3-of-19 (15.8 percent) from three-point range. Knox's confidence, though, hasn't taken a hit, which is important. "This is what the NBA put preseason in for, just for guys like me, to see what they can work on, see what they’ve got to get in the gym and get better at, watch a lot of film," Knox said. "I’m definitely going to take this preseason, watch a lot of film, watch all my mistakes and like I said, this is what it’s for, for me to learn and be able to bounce back and get ready for the game on Wednesday." David Fizdale said Friday night that Knox has to go through this. He has to take these lumps, endure the struggles and learn from them. And the coach said he's still comfortable slotting Knox into the starting five. "For that position and what we’re trying to grow there I think he’s what we want to put in that spot and just let him go through the hell of it and get beat up and have some success, and all of that stuff," Knox said. "But like I said, it’s not permanent, and if it’s something where a guy continues to struggle it’s on me to help and sometimes shifting the lineup helps guys. But they all know that it’s going to be all year. You’ve got to continue to fight and battle for what you get." Knox should be in the starting lineup. He's the Knicks' ninth overall pick, a player they want to be a part of their core for the future. Get him his minutes now and let him grow. It isn't surprising that a 19-year-old rookie is going to struggle. How he recovers from those struggles is what matters. The Knicks aren't going to win many games this season, which is all about development and evaluation. There were positives to take away. He was aggressive going to the basket. He ran Fizdale's system well, getting rebounds and pushing the ball up the floor when he could. The rest will come in time. Frank Ntilikina has made progress It was evident on Friday night. Ntilikina finished with nine points off the bench on 3-of-6 shooting to go along with four rebounds and five assists in 30 minutes. He was most successful when driving to the basket, and again showed off a nice spin move in the lane, slicing through the Nets' defense before a lefty layup. That aggressive mentality is what the Knicks have been trying to get out of him. He's showing it consistently now and appears much more comfortable and confident offensively. Ntilikina's defense continued to be strong. He gets his arms into the passing lanes, he cuts off drives, fights through screens. The Knicks' point guard situation is still unsettled, though. Fizdale said before Friday's game he was undecided on who should start, but also said the Knicks aren't the Warriors or the Rockets — meaning they don't have to have defined roles at this point. Ntilikina certainly didn't hurt his cause on Friday night, especially since Trey Burke hasn't stood out and Emmanuel Mudiay seems to have played himself out of the competition. If the Knicks truly don't believe Ntilikina is a point guard, then they should take advantage of his versatility and bring off the bench as a two or even a three. Otherwise, Ntilikina should be in the starting lineup. Like Knox, he's a player who's an important part of the Knicks' future. The Knicks need to come to a conclusion on what he could be, and develop him either way. Other notables: Enes Kanter's importance. Mitchell Robinson's potential.
