At full-time the Sunderland bodies slumped. Hands over faces. Heads down. For the second time in a week, the players knew they had thrown away a lead and were having to settle for a draw in their battle to survive in the Championship.Against Norwich on Tuesday, they were 1-0 up with two minutes left, having missed a penalty before Ivo Pinto equalised for the Canaries. This time though, the Sunderland fans didn't have to wait until the dying seconds of the game for the heartbreak. That came in the 79th minute when Reading's Yann Kermorgant pulled one back with a header to make it 2-2. Reading had taken the lead, and looked the better of the two sides for much of the first half. In the 19th minute they got their reward when Lee Camp spilled a ball into the path of Reading's Jon Bodvarsson. The goalkeeper closed down the angle but in doing so, clattered into the Icelandic international.Referee Stephen Martin awarded a penalty and Liam Kelly smashed it past Camp to give Paul Clement's side a lead.Sunderland pressed forward but everything they tried to do just didn't quite come off. Passes were just an inch too long, crosses were slightly overweighted and Ashley Fletcher hit the post, but Reading were able to keep them at bay until after the break.Whatever Chris Coleman said to his Sunderland team at half-time, it clearly worked as they equalised straight after the interval.Paddy McNair picked the ball up inside the Reading half and with nobody available to take a pass he carried on his cavalier run before pulling the trigger. His effort - from 30 yards out - was speculative and it left Vito Mannone rooted to the spot in the goalmouth as it rippled the back of the net.Strangely it was now Sunderland in the ascendancy and they made that tell with a second goal. The legs may be old, some would say even gone. But that doesn't matter if you score with your head. And that's just what Lee Cattermole did as he glanced in Aiden McGeady's curling free-kick to give the Black Cats the lead. Could they do it? Could they hold on?By then there were 24 minutes to play. They had chances to extend their lead and Reading had opportunities to draw level. The difference was Reading took theirs as Chris Gunter lofted in a delivery and Kermorgant hit home. The bodies slumped to the turf, and the Sunderland players knew that once again they had blown it.
In a sea of glum expressions, Sven Ulreich's was the glummest of the lot at Bayern's post-match banquet on Wednesday night. Just a few hours earlier, it was Ulreich's howler which had allowed Real Madrid to go 2-1 up, and ultimately knock Bayern out of the Champions League.Ulreich, whose brilliance standing in for Manuel Neuer this season has surprised everyone, did not deserve to be the villain of the piece. But then Bayern, arguably, did not deserve to lose the tie. 'We all agree that we were the better team,' said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. 'This was the best Champions League game I have seen with Bayern in the last five years.'Undaunted by the task of turning around a 2-1 deficit in the Bernabeu, Bayern were their confident, ambitious best, and they brought Real Madrid to the brink. But an individual error in each leg and a string of miserable luck did for them in the end. Against a team as brutally efficient as Zinedine Zidane's, that is all it takes.'Bayern did very well, but we were more ruthless, and that's why we went through,' said Madrid's Toni Kroos. It was difficult to argue with him.Bayern now face the familiar feeling of being knocked out in the semi-finals by a Spanish club, something which has happened to them in four of the last five seasons. Madrid alone have eliminated Bayern three times in that period, including in last year's quarter-final.Hopes that Jupp Heynckes could break the Spanish curse and lead Bayern to a second treble now lie in ruins. The 72-year-old will return to retirement at the end of this season. Wednesday was his last hurrah in European competition.'Jupp thanked the players in the dressing room afterwards, it was very emotional,' said Rummenigge.'He also reminded them that the German Cup Final is in two weeks. It is our responsibility to win the double and round off a season which will be difficult to match.'That is the bitterest pill for Bayern, who fought back from full-blown crisis in the course of this season. Unlike in previous years, they seemed to have hit their stride at just the right moment. Now, they are back to square one, and dramatically so. Heynckes will be gone in the summer, replaced by Niko Kovac, and the 46-year-old must make sure that the team do not slip back into the instability and aimlessness that plagued them nine months ago.Kovac's arrival will be the start of an overhaul at Bayern. New players such as Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka are expected to break into the team, while the likes of Arturo Vidal and Sebastian Rudy are likely to move on.There are also question marks over the futures of David Alaba, Jerome Boateng and Robert Lewandowski, all of whom have been linked with moves away from Munich. Though it is unlikely that any of them will leave this summer, rumours of their departure will loom large in the coming years, particularly if Kovac makes a bad start. The new coach, at least, can rest easy in the knowledge that superstars Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery will
This time, LeBron James didn't have to do it all by himself.James had 26 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds for his 21st career playoff triple-double, JR Smith scored 20 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Toronto Raptors 113-112 in overtime on Tuesday night to win Game 1 of their second-round playoff series.Kyle Korver scored 19 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime after Cleveland never led in regulation. Tristan Thompson had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who have eliminated Toronto in each of the past two postseasons. 'My team-mates were unbelievable tonight,' James said. 'They stepped up when I wasn't at my best.'Jeff Green scored 16 points and Kevin Love had 13 rebounds.James, who topped 40 points three times in seven games against Indiana in round one, shot 12 for 30 against Toronto, going 1 for 8 from 3-point range, and called it 'probably one of my worst games of the season.'Still, James came through when it counted, tying the score with two baskets in the final 92 seconds of regulation to complete Cleveland's comeback from a double-digit deficit.'It got to a one-possession, two-possession game,' James said. 'That's what I like the most.' Toronto's Fred VanVleet missed a 3-pointer with 3.4 seconds to go in overtime that could have won it for the Raptors, who couldn't hold on after taking a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter.'He got a heck of a shot,' Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan said. 'I'll live with him shooting that shot 10 times out of 10. We got a good look and it just didn't fall.'Jonas Valanciunas had 21 points and 21 rebounds, Kyle Lowry had 18 points and 10 assists, and DeRozan scored 22 points for the Raptors, who host Game 2 on Thursday night. The Cavaliers beat the Raptors in six games in the Eastern Conference finals in 2016 before going on to win their first NBA championship. Last year, Cleveland swept Toronto in the second round.Korver's 3 early in overtime gave the Cavaliers their first lead of the game, 108-105. Lowry's three-point play made it 113-112 with 57 seconds to go and, after the Cavs were called for a shot-clock violation, Toronto had one more chance to win, but VanVleet couldn't come through.'We feel good about the win but I think we were also very fortunate,' Korver said.VanVleet was one of four Raptors to miss in the final seconds of regulation. Toronto got four looks at the potential winning basket but missed all four, including a wide-open 3 by VanVleet, giving Cleveland the ball with 0.6 seconds remaining. Green inbounded to James, but his shot bounced off the rim.The Raptors shot 5 for 24 in the fourth quarter, with Valanciunas missing six of seven attempts. Toronto missed its final 11 shot attempts in regulation. 'I don't know if it was nerves or yips or what,' Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. 'Just things that shot ourselves in the foot when we had a 10-point lead.'DeRozan scored 11 points in the first, connecting on five of eight attempts, and Lowry had

Tom Ince snatched an injury-time winner that could be enough to keep Huddersfield Town up and complete what manager David Wagner has described as ‘a miracle’.The West Yorkshire side had thrown just about all they could at a resolute Watford in a tense and, until then, largely uneventful encounter. Then Terence Kongolo floated another hopeful ball back into the Watford penalty box and Laurent Depoitre made enough of a nuisance of himself for Mathias Zanka, thrown up front as a last resort, to win possession. He caught out Watford by flicking the ball inside, and substitute Ince arrived to slide it home.Cue delirium around the John Smith’s Stadium at a time when they were starting to wonder if a solitary point would be enough. With their remaining four fixtures against Everton, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, there were concerns it would be the last one they get.Instead, they bagged all three and instantly moved up another three places. Wagner’s side are now seven points clear of Southampton whose collapse after leading Chelsea by two goals in the early kick-off had raised spirits here beforehand.Up to that point, Huddersfield lacked the guile and ingenuity required to break down a well-organised Watford in a game low on quality between one team seeing out the remainder of the season and another fighting for their Premier League lives. On paper, this was bar far the most winnable of Huddersfield’s remaining fixtures. Watford had taken just one point from their previous nine away games in the Premier League, and had not even scored away from Vicarage Road since January 2. The tension was palpable around the John Smith’s Stadium but Wagner’s side began positively and produced a first-half performance full of enterprise and purpose.Craig Cathcart and Adrian Mariappa both had to be on their toes to clear the danger as Huddersfield pressed in the opening 20 minutes. However, they were
