No. 21 Michigan State holds off Minnesota, 30-27

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) L.J. Scott returned from an injury to rush for a career-high 194 yards and two touchdowns , helping 21st-ranked Michigan State hang on for a 30-27 victory over Minnesota on a soggy Saturday night after kickoff was delayed 34 minutes by lightning strikes. Madre London pitched in 74 yards rushing and a score, Matt Coghlin made three field goals and the Spartans (5-1, 3-0 Big Ten) maintained the momentum created by beating Michigan on the strength of a dominant performance by their offensive line. Demry Croft relieved a struggling Conor Rhoda at quarterback for the Gophers (3-3, 0-3) in the middle of the second quarter and connected with Tyler Johnson for three touchdown passes in the fourth. The late surge wasn’t enough to overcome the bruising, pulling and trapping Spartans blockers who wore down an injury-depleted Gophers defense. Scott was only a spectator for the fun in the previous game, when the Spartans went on the road and forced five turnovers by the Wolverines to hold on through a thunderstorm for a 14-10 win. That proved to be a beneficial experience, given the torrential rain that fell sideways in the swirling wind right before the game and during much of the first half. The wet weather was a major factor early. Punter Jake Hartbarger dropped a high snap after a three-and-out by the Spartans on their first possession, and the Gophers jumped on the ball at the 3. But just as they did later in the first quarter after an interception of Brian Lewerke b

How Angel Delgado and Seton Hall woke up after halftime vs. Indiana

Angel Delgado doesn't yell at his Seton Hall teammates when he wants the ball. He doesn't wave his hands or gesture, and he doesn't tell them he wants it during timeouts. All the senior big man does is give them a look. "He won't scream at you saying to get him the ball because he's not a selfish person," swingman Desi Rodriguez said. "He gets a little pouty, Angel is still a big baby. Just like with food, if he's hungry that's how he acts, he'll have an ugly face." Delgado wasn't giving them that look in the first half against Indiana on Wednesday, and the star senior wasn't getting the rock and the Pirates were trailing. Then at halftime, coach Kevin Willard reminded his players they might want to consider passing inside to the center who has more double-doubles than anyone in the country. The result was 10 straight Seton Hall points shortly after halftime, seven of which were scored by Delgado, to fuel the No. 22 Pirates in a 84-68 victory over Indiana at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. "(Coach) screamed at me, he said, 'get him the ball,'" so I said I would get him it," Rodriguez said. "Every play I throw it into him, because I know nine out of 10 times it's going to be a good play. I just throw it in there, if you throw it in there you're not going

Rutgers learns valuable lesson, puts away Cleveland State to improve to 3-0

PISCATAWAY — Steve Pikiell wasn't pleased with how his Rutgers men's basketball team performed in its most recent outing. "Hopefully we’ll learn a lot from this,'' Rutgers coach said after the four-point win over a Central Connecticut State squad picked to finish near the bottom of the Northeast Conference. The Scarlet Knights learned the lesson, executing offensively and turning up the throttle defensively in building a nine-point halftime lead. ru-cleve3jpg-20dd62c9b9d78ffb.jpg Keith Sargeant | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Rutgers didn't let up in the second half, cruising to a 70-38 triumph over Cleveland State on Tuesday night before 3,292 fans at the Rutgers Athletic Center. After putting a scare in the Rutgers fan base with its' lackluster effort against Central Connecticut, the Scarlet Knights (3-0) led for the game's final 35 minutes and had little trouble putting away a Cleveland State team (0-2) picked to finish ninth in the 10-team Horizon League. "That’s more like how I want to play,'' Pikiell said. "These guys came out ready to go, and that’s the defense I like. Everybody contributed. It was a great team win. Excited by the way we played tonight.''

Kentucky football report card: Grading the Wildcats’ win against Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The average margin of victory in Kentucky’s three SEC wins before this weekend was 6.3 points per game. But the Wildcats, who’ve become known for nail-biting finishes, rolled to a 44-21 win at Vanderbilt on Saturday. It was Kentucky’s most-dominant conference win since Mark Stoops arrived in Lexington. The Cats fell behind 7-0, but then scored 34 unanswered points in a road stadium painted in blue. Kentucky (7-3, 4-3 SEC) has won seven of its last 12 SEC games — the program’s best conference stretch since the 1998-99 seasons. Here’s how we graded the performance: Offense: A It’s not a bad day for the offense when your starting running back breaks the school record for rushing touchdowns. Benny Snell found the end zone 3 times to pass Sonny Collins and Moe Williams on the all-time rushing touchdowns list at Kentucky. Snell carried 17 times for 116 yards — a nice 6.8 yards per attempt. The super sophomore scored 3 touchdowns and now has 9 touchdowns in Kentucky’s last three games. “As we said from day one when we recruited him and when he came in here, the first thing we looked at with him is what you see is that toughness, is that attitude, is a strong, physical runner,” Stoops said of Snell. “But the maturity to be able to do these things, we needed that in that room. We still need it — and I appreciate him and what he’s done.” RELATED: Benny Snell’s record day comes with reminder that he’s just a sophomore And it wasn’t just Snell in the run game.

Rypien, Mattison lead Boise State past Nevada, 41-14

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Despite Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien’s sparkling passing performance in the Broncos’ 41-14 rout of Nevada on Saturday night, he’s not above receiving unconventional coaching. After leaping up and catching a 15-yard wide receiver pass from Cedrick Wilson, Rypien went back to the huddle and received some direction from Wilson. “Cedrick told me that’s what he wanted me to do on the next deep ball—just throw it up there so he could make a play,” Rypien said after the game. “So, I said, ‘All right.’ And he just went up and made the play.” The play Rypien referred to was a 44-yard grab by Wilson on a goal line in double coverage, a scoring strike that helped Boise State retake the lead early in the second quarter and never look back. “Brett is seeing things on the field,” Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. “His vision is better, and his passing is better.” Rypien, who has shared playing time this season with graduate transfer Montell Cozart, has thrived in the dual system. He finished 20-of-27 passing for 258 yards and two touchdowns. Boise State (7-2, 5-0 Mountain West Conference) won its fifth straight game and also recorded its fifth consecutive victory over conference rivals. Nevada (1-8, 1-4), which lost its previous two games by a combined total of five points against Colorado State and Air Force, looked overmatched after putting up a fight early. After falling behind 7-0 and then again at 14-10 early in the second quarter, Boise State tu

Check. Related Links Box Score | PDF Notes Photo Gallery Auburn checked all the boxes in a 52-20 win at Arkansas on Saturday night. "It's a big win for our program," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "We had a tough loss last week. There was a lot of negative going around, but our guys bounced back. We practiced great on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and it carried over. I'm very proud of our guys." The Tigers (6-2, 4-1), who outgained Arkansas, 629 to 334, looked hungry and eager to prove they still belonged in the conversation as one of the contenders in the SEC. The offense was spearheaded by its rushing attack as Auburn finished with 345 yards on the ground. It was a heavy dose of Kerryon Johnson in the first half, but Kamryn Pettway, who had been battling an injury all season, took over in the second half. The redshirt junior led the Tigers with 90 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries. "When [Pettway] is healthy, he's a load," Malzahn said. "It's a good one-two punch with Kerryon." The quarterbacks also contributed to the ground game Saturday. Starter Jarrett Stidham rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown, and backup Malik Willis added 62 yards on just two carries as he led a scoring drive in the fourth quarter that finished with a four-yard pass from Willis to fell

Michael Jordan says 28 NBA teams are 'garbage'

NEW YORK — Adam Silver's NBA has endless action and daily drama. That's the offseason. Then the regular season starts, and some of the intrigue ends. Most predictions again see Golden State and Cleveland standing above their challengers for a fourth straight season, a pattern of dominance that even has Michael Jordan fearing a league where 28 teams are "garbage." The NBA commissioner isn't worried. Silver believes great teams are good for business, the way Jordan's Bulls were in the 1990s and the way Stephen Curry's and LeBron James' teams are now. The commissioner says any of them can be beaten, too. "Sometimes it's just the nature of things, but I'm confident that given some of the moves that our teams made in the offseason that there's no doubt there are multiple teams gunning for the Warriors and for that matter gunning for the Cavaliers this season as well," Silver said. Jordan now owns the Charlotte Hornets, one of perhaps 25 teams in the NBA with little-to-no hope of winning a title this season — or maybe anytime soon. The Hornets have just one All-Star, not nearly enough to compete when the Warriors have arguably four top-20 players, and the Cavaliers restocked around James with the likes of Dwyane Wade and Derrick Rose after Golden State's romp last June. "I think it's going to hurt the overall aspect of the league from a competitive standpoint," Jordan told "Cigar Aficionado" magazine about multiple stars joining together on the same team. "You're going to ha
