December 6, 1988 - The 1989 Detroit Pistons typically ran a three-guard rotation of Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, and Vinnie Johnson. However, in the event of injury or foul trouble, a fourth guard would inevitably come into play. Later in the season, the onus would often fall upon the shoulders of John Long. Prior to his signing, however, it was rookie Micheal Williams seizing that opportunity. Selected 48th overall in the 1988 NBA Draft, Williams would go on to become the Pistons' most successful draft pick over a seven year span between 1987 and 1992. Only, the bulk of that success would occur beyond Detroit. Williams played just one season for the Pistons, averaging 2.6 points in 49 appearances before being sent to Phoenix alongside 1989 draft pick Kenny Battle in exchange for Anthony Cook. Williams later emerged as a legitimate starting point guard option with the Indiana Pacers and Minnesota Timberwolves, topping out in 1993 when he averaged 15.1 points and 8.2 assists while setting the all-time NBA record for consecutive free throws made (97).
