Seven Straight Wins for the Phins – NFL Week 16 Miami Dolphins Offense and Defense Film Study

The Dolphins are the first NFL team in history to lose 7 straight games and come back and win 7 straight games! It really is about both sides of the ball although they might be winning more on defense (which we are also going to take a look at in this video). But Tua Tagovailoa is doing some really good things and his main man Jaylen Waddle. They really are getting him involved, he is on the cusp of breaking the rookie record for catches in a season set by my old teammate, Anquon Boldin. But they do some many great things with him. It’s really that connection between those two. When they need a big play, 3rd and short, those two guys being on the same page has really been the difference. You couple that with what they are doing defensively, and you have a team that’s got a great opportunity to make it to the playoffs. And they are a team that no one wants to play in the playoffs because of all of the different challenges they present defensively. Ian Book had a pretty tough challenge. What are you going to do against all that stuff? You have to have a distinct plan as an offense when you go against the Miami Dolphins because they are going to give you a whole bunch of different looks. You have to be on top of it and ready. If you’re playing the game slow or it’s going too fast for you, like it was for Ian Book, you have no chance against this Dolphins defense because they are so good and so disciplined along with so many different looks. You couple that with an offense that’s doing enough. They aren’t great or outstanding, there isn’t anything that they do really well. But Waddle and Tua are giving them a chance to complete third down plays, to keep the chains going, to play with what their defense is doing and they are making enough plays to score points. Or they are being set up to score points by their defense. Don’t turn the ball over, score when you have opportunities. That’s what’s led the Miami Dolphins to 7 straight wins. #NFL #MiamiDolphins #MNF

NFL Playoffs Wild Card Preview – Jimmy Garoppolo | San Francisco 49ers Kurt Warner Breakdown

In the next few sessions of StudyBall, we are going to take a look at the Sunday Wild Card matchups! We are going to start with the Cowboys and 49ers. This session is just going to be on Jimmy G. He is so up and down. Even in the course of a game, he can be so good and so bad (if you want to use that term). He can miss so many things in the course of the game. I believe he is the key in determining how far the 49ers can go. Let’s take a look at just this past week against the Rams. I know he brought his team back and won but I wanted to show you over the course of the game the discrepancy between the really good and the things he misses or leaves out on the field. Jimmy G in a nutshell for one game. The extreme highs, the big time throws. And then, over the course of the game, you go through all of the stuff that he leaves out there. All the missed opportunities that he had were obvious. Instead of just leaving the field understanding what you’re going to read and getting the ball out to the right guy. That’s going to be key against the Cowboys, especially because they are a team that turns the football over. But it’s going to be key throughout the playoffs. However far they go, Jimmy G being able to see the field and make the right decisions most of the time, will determine how far the 49ers go. #NFLPlayoffs #JimmyGaroppolo #49ers

The Ups and Downs of Carson Wentz – NFL Week 18 Indianapolis Colts Film Study by Kurt Warner
The Ups and Downs of Carson Wentz – NFL Week 18 Indianapolis Colts Film Study by Kurt Warner

It's playoff week and I am so excited about the first round of matchups! I am going to do that a little bit later in the week. First a little self promotion, with my American Underdog shirt. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I encourage you to go see the movie! The reviewers have been incredibly touched by the movie. Just encourage you to go check out the movie in a theater near you! It’s a great movie for the whole family so bring everyone. Let me know what you think of the movie on all of our social media platforms. Keep those numbers up and people seem to be enjoying this channel so share it as well! Now as we get into the breakdown today, I want to look back and maybe the most disappointing moment of last weekend was the Colts going down to Jacksonville. The Jags have been struggling, the Colts have been playing really well. We all know what the result was. Important play-in game for the Colts and didn’t get it done. As you know, I like to break down the quarterbacks. Carson Wentz really had an up and down year. Never played with consistency. Never played with the understanding of what he was seeing to me to make the right throws in critical moments to be able to take this team to another level. Really good defense, great running back, and Carson never came into that point where he was THAT guy. That showed up again on Sunday. This is going to be a look at Carson Wentz and the point in time of his career and where I believe he has to get better moving forward if he wants to be that franchise guy. Hopefully in Indy because they did some good things down the stretch this year. There are certain things he has to get better with if he wants to be THAT guy. Let’s take a look. You see all the little things. Quarterbacks, coaches, continually work on getting your eyes in the right spot. Understand the big picture of the concept. Understand who you’re putting pressure on defensively. Get your eyes there right now. You don’t need to look off that much. Looking off is not that big of a deal as people say it is. Yes there are certain routes where we want to look people off. Go Routes holding that free safety, working double seams: work the free safety to one side and throw to the other. But on most good concepts, you don’t have to hold a backside safety to throw it front side. There is now reason to get your eyes over there. Get your eyes on the right guy, get a definitive answer as to who you are reading and where I need to throw the football. Too many guys spend too much time looking at things they don’t need to look at and it gives them all kinds of problems because they hold the football too long and you take sacks. Carson Wentz has got to get better at this. This is what he struggled with last year in Philly. Not knowing where to get his eyes right off the bat and you see having some of those same issues with Indy this year. Although Frank Reich did a better job of calling concepts to get his eyes in the right spot. Earlier, it comes back to haunt you every single time if you have got to hold the football. If you’re not sure where the ball or your eyes have to go and you’re looking all over the place, that means you don’t know what you are looking at and you’re just trying to find someone open. You play in that world, especially in the higher levels you get to, the more you are going to struggle.

Kyler and the AZ Offense are Clicking at the Right Time – NFL Week 17 Arizona Kurt Warner Film Study
Kyler and the AZ Offense are Clicking at the Right Time – NFL Week 17 Arizona Kurt Warner Film Study

The Arizona Cardinals have been going through some struggles as of late, but they broke out in a nice way against the Dallas Cowboys this weekend, one of the hottest teams in the league, so you know they are feeling very confident. Heading into the last weekend of the year, there's still a lot to be determined...but you’re always looking at the teams that are playing their best football or are getting hot at the right time. The Cardinals are going to have to continue that this weekend against the Seattle Seahawks and get that roll going kind of like the early part of the year. Get that offense rolling as they get into the playoffs. If they do that, this is one of the most dangerous teams heading in even if they don’t win the division, it’s one of those teams you don’t want to face. When they are at their best, the Cardinals are pushing the ball down the field. Kyler Murray is using that special arm and special throwing ability to make big second level plays. When they struggled this year and went on that losing streak, they weren’t getting those big plays. They didn’t have the guys like Deandre Hopkins who went out to get those big plays for him. Not the consistency there. So you got a few plays in this game. AJ Green, Christian Kirk, Wesley: all of those guys making big plays for them. It’s what they are going to need because that is how they are built. They can dink and dunk you, they will run the football, but really where they are different is the ability to attack down the field and specifically because they have a quarterback that has the gifts to be able to attack down the field with his right arm. So something to pay attention to as they move forward is he is going to take those chances. Those 1 on 1 throws down the field. Do they hit those throws? Second part: Kyler, being more judicious with the football and those situations. “Yeah I got a perfect look presnap,” doesn’t mean it’s going to play out like you want to postsnap. You have to be able to understand what you got. You have to be able to see the relationship, see if that guy wins and not just throw it up. I want to see him grow a little bit in that. See it, throw it if it’s there, if not throw it down to those other guys that are open and give yourself a shot on some of those under and quick throws that can still be big plays against man to man coverage. The last thing, scoring points is what this team did earlier in the year. Scoring 30 plus points a game, scoring on everyone. Got to be more efficient in the redzone. I believe it’s going to play into having to make more plays in the passing game in the redzone. They are so good at running it. James Connor has been great, you compliment that with Kyler and the RPO and zone reads, they are almost unstoppable when you get down tight. You pressure them, get the ball out of Kyler’s hands from a running standpoint and you force those other guys to beat you, or you force the scheme to beat you in the redzone, that is where the Cardinals have to be better. If they get better in that area, they get the big plays, this is a team that no one wants to play, especially because they have been really good on the road. But, you eliminate some of those things, you force Kyler into having to throw the ball up into those man to man situations that aren’t ideal, now you have a chance to beat this Cardinals team. #NFL #Cardinals #KylerMurray

Joey B Makes History – NFL Week 16 Cincinnati Bengals & Joe Burrow – Kurt Warner Game Tape Breakdown

I played a lot of football games in my career. Never once did I throw for over 500 yards. Joe Burrow, in his second year, threw for 525 yards last Sunday, one of the top 5 passing performances in the history of the NFL! Pretty impressive...so when you have a performance like that, you figure we have to take it into StudyBall and we've got to take a look at what he did in that game against the Ravens and what calculated to that big day for Joe Burrow. As is always the case, there are still have some things that he can get better at. Knowing where your eyes need to go, know what you’re reading right off the bat. Get your feet tied to the route, be ready to throw the route on time so in tight windows no one touches the ball except your receivers. Joe Burrow is getting it out on time. That, to me, is what playing the quarterback position is all about and why he is up on the list of top quarterbacks in this league who understands how to play the position. Can he make some great throws? Absolutely but maybe not like some other guys in the league. But those, to me, are great throws. Money throws, front shoulder, on time, allowing your playmakers to make those plays: that’s the play of a great quarterback! #NFL #JoeBurrow #Bengals

Stafford Has The Rams In Championship Form – NFL Week 14 Kurt Warner Game Tape Breakdown
Stafford Has The Rams In Championship Form – NFL Week 14 Kurt Warner Game Tape Breakdown

After a great Monday night game, we are going to take a look at Matthew Stafford in today’s session. It’s exactly why they brought him to LA. You saw everything on display in this game. Mental ability, physical ability, how he elevates the game of that team offensively. And you saw him play big in those moments which is exactly what they are going to need down the stretch as they head towards the playoffs. The potential of this Rams offense is crazy. It all starts with Matthew Stafford, who can make all those throws and different plays. Really good stuff there by the Rams. Then it comes back to those receivers. Those two receivers are doing so many good things out there. Little details of their route running. Cooper Kupp, you see it all day long, that’s why he is number one in the league. OBJ, we didn’t see it for a while but it’s coming along. As he is getting comfortable in this offense, you’re seeing those little nuances that are separating him. He continues to run routes like that, you have Kupp, you get other guys healthy, with Matthew Stafford playing THIS way, coupled with that defense, that’s what makes this team a championship team. We haven’t seen it enough, but if Monday night was any sign of what this team can be, this team can compete for any championship with their skill players and their superstars playing like they did.

Who's to blame for the Cowboys' last two Ls? – Kurt Warner NFL Week 11 Game Tape Breakdown
Who's to blame for the Cowboys' last two Ls? – Kurt Warner NFL Week 11 Game Tape Breakdown

As we get ready for Thanksgiving and all the things that we’re thankful for…including three football games on Thanksgiving day! One of the staples when I was growing up on Thanksgiving was watching the Dallas cowboys play football. They were my favorite team growing up…America’s team. Being from Iowa, we didn’t have our own pro sports team, so it was all about the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys having a really really good year, although they dropped two of their last three and haven’t looked too good offensively in those two games. So I want to take a look at the Dallas Cowboys in their game last week against the Kansas City Chiefs. Everybody is asking what went wrong…what was the problem with the Dallas Cowboys? Where do we point the finger in that particular game? Well the beautiful thing about football is that it’s the ultimate team sport. It take everybody to win football games. I also often say that’s the worst thing about football, is that it’s a team sport. It’s not about one guy, it takes everybody on every given play to be successful. I looked at the Buffalo Bills a couple weeks ago and I talked about hidden yardage. Opportunities that are missed within a game. Well, the Dallas Cowboys had plenty of missed opportunities against the Chiefs and ended up losing that game by 10 points. As we look at the tape in this episode, you’ll say to yourself, could these plays have made the difference between them winning and losing? But that’s the bottom line is you have to execute. Every team is going to have a handful of plays every game where they don’t execute. The higher that number gets the less chance you have to win football games…especially against teams that are really good, like the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hidden Yardage – Buffalo Bills | Josh Allen – NFL Week 9 Game Tape Breakdown by Kurt Warner
Hidden Yardage – Buffalo Bills | Josh Allen – NFL Week 9 Game Tape Breakdown by Kurt Warner

I want to get a little feedback from you guys. Hit me up on my YouTube channel or Twitter or wherever QB Confidential is. Let me know whatever you guys are looking for! I am always dumbfounded when I put different videos out there and I think, “this is a great video, really teaches the game,” and it doesn’t get very many views. Then I do something on a team that’s pertinent in the NFL, still not many views. I do something else and it gets a lot of views. Always trying to get feedback from you guys on why it is that you like, what you want to see, etc. Is it stuff that is pertinent specifically to your team or to certain teams? But hit me up just so I can give you guys what you want. Normally every week, I just look for themes in the different films that I am watching. Whether that is an overall theme in the week about interceptions and the anatomy of the INT. How those things play out. Today, we are looking at the Buffalo Bills. A couple of weeks ago, I thought the Bills were the best football team in the NFL. They’ve struggled since then, lost to a Jags team that had one win up to this point. You sit back, scratch your head and say, “how does this stuff happen?” As you know, every week to me it’s about details. I don’t care how good you are, how talented you are, if you don’t pay attention to the details and little things, such as hidden yardage. There isn’t a stat for it, but I always watch for it when I go through the film. “Where did they miss opportunities to get yards? Where did something happen that changed the play from being 3 yards to being 10 yards?” Or vise versa. Those are the little things that add up in a game and determine whether a team wins or loses at the NFL level because there is so much parody. Today, we are going to look at the Buffalo Bills versus the Jacksonville Jaguars and I am going to show you a lot of the little details that I believe is what cost them. All they needed was 3 more points. A touchdown here instead of a field goal would’ve won them the game but a lot of things that they did or didn’t do well enough that I believe cost them the game. Hidden yardage. That’s what it’s all about. Go back and look at the game and look at how many opportunities the Buffalo Bills missed in that game. Without a doubt, it would've changed what that game looked like. There’s always going to be hidden yardage in every game. There are going to be times where you miss an opportunity: QB makes a bad throw, misses a read, misses a guy, a receiver falls, etc. but that wasn’t all the plays I could find. That was 17 plays in the game! How many plays do we get in a game? 60-65? 17 plays where Buffalo missed opportunities for some easy hidden yardage. 3 point loss, without a doubt, those plays determined the fact that they could’ve won, but lost because of the little things that they didn’t do. That, to me, is what makes a good football team, a GREAT football team. It’s not just the talent you have, the ability to capture as much hidden yardage as possible each and every Sunday. Because at the end of the day, those hidden yardages are difference makers in the parody of the NFL. #JoshAllen #BuffaloBills #QBConfidential
