FSU raced out to an early lead and found themselves on the better side of a 26-3 lead not long after halftime. Most of their dominance came off the back of a complete defensive performance led by Jermaine Johnson and Keir Thomas which was backed up by one of the better halves of football played by QB Jordan Travis. The second half was a bit dicier. Penalty issues plagued the Seminoles but they withstood the barrage of yellow flags to pull out a conference road victory. Some keys to the game from an X’s and O’s perspective: FSU was able to beat both man and zone looks through the air early in the passing game Boston College committed to shutting down FSU’s bread and butter counter trey The defensive line caused problems for BC QB Phil Jurkovec who was never able to find a rhythm BC was able to wear down the FSU defense and slowed down the pressure from the D-Line Some of these may ideas need further explanation so let's jump to the chalkboard to get a better idea of how this game played out.

The 93-65 final tally is not what the team and many fans were hoping for but it’s not a complete picture of FSU’s performance or an indictment on its future. Purdue is a good basketball team. They operated with precision in their offensive movement, passing, and shooting and backed it up with a solid but not stellar defense. The one-two punch of 7’4” Zach Edey and playmaking center Trevion Williams backed by one of the best guards in the country in Jaden Ivey makes this team a difficult out to say the least. However, it was instructive to see FSU’s strengths and weaknesses look like in the face of a team that is operating at the upper tier of the sport. Some key takeaways are: FSU’s defense is solid and took Purdue out of their rhythm Halfcourt offense needs some work but flashes by Caleb Mills and Jalen Warley give hope to the future in that area Senior leaders Malik Osbourne and Anthony Polite have been slow to take the reigns on offense John Butler continues to shine as a seven-footer who can play on the perimeter With three players out FSU is testing the limits of their bench If you missed the game or just want to take another look at the factors that I mentioned above join me as I go through the film to show some highlights and some lowlights in FSU’s game vs Purdue. The Seminoles came out firing in the first half and they jumped out to a 17-0 lead off of the back of a few big turnovers. Miami cut the gap to 20-7 before the half. In the third quarter, Miami managed to continue building on their momentum, taking the lead going into the final quarter. However, FSU fought back and managed to get the lead with only a few seconds left on the clock to close out the rivalry victory. A few things stood out about this game. Offense The offense’s gameplan was comprehensive and built upon itself The counter-action by the line played with the eyes of Miami’s defense and opened up running lanes Miami made adjustments in the second half to blow up the counter run and slow down FSU’s rushing attack Defense The defensive line dominated and allowed the linebackers to play more out in space The safeties played aggressive and low to take away Miami’s bread and butter glance route There are some real solid young pieces on the secondary between Brownlee, Cooper, and Knowles If you want a chance to see how some of these concepts played out on the field or just want to rewatch a big rivalry victory for FSU then join the guys from the Triple Option as they take a deep dive into the film. There were problems on both sides of the ball. The offense, led by McKenzie Milton, struggled to get anything going in the first half. This meant the defense was on the field for more time while NC State’s punter widdled any available field position away. The defense held solid outside of a couple of broken plays which kept the Seminoles in a two-score game at the half. The second half started with a gutsy onside kick and a TD for the ‘Noles and some momentum began to swing their way. Unfortunately, the defense quickly gave up another chunk touchdown and FSU was never able to close the two-score gap. When an FSU team has this record (3-6) there have to be questions asked. Where are they falling short? Was this game merely a result of lost practice time and available players from the flu? That’s why guys at the Triple Option are here. They will go through the tape when no one else wants to in order to get down to the nitty-gritty of this football team.
